Came here for a party and was not disappointed! This place was able to accommodate a party of ten, which was another bonus. The inside wasn't big, but it was super cute and gave a cozy vibe. I'm going to start with all of the dishes were bountiful and flavourful. The cold appetizer platter ($22.99) was great with a combination of dips from homous, tzatsiki, melizno to taramasalata and accompanied with pita bread. The hot appetizer platter ($38.99) had kalamari, spanakopita, keftedos, dolmathes. I really enjoyed the keftedos and kalamari. The seafood platter ($71.99) had a combination of kalamari with a few prawns, scallops, salmon and halibut. There wasn't a lot of prawns or scallop, but the dish was still good. My favourite was the paithakia skaras ($34.99) which consisted of lamb served with rice, and roasted potatoes. These dishes were great to share and everyone was full at the end. Price is reasonable for the amount of food and service was friendly. The only drawback was parking was mostly metered. If you want free parking, you would have to find one around three or more blocks away. read more

This has been our favorite Greek restaurant for as long as I can remember. We even booked almost the entire restaurant with 35 seats for my wife's surprise Birthday. Food is normally great and staff have always been extremely helpful. Except last night when we did 3 take out meals and the Pizza bottom was burn Black. We were too full from the Lamb chops and lamb shoulder kso we ate the pizza for lunch. It was so burn that I could not eat it. Worst burn pizza bottom ever and I eaten some bad pizza before. Wife called the restaurant to let them know but that's was the end of it. No offer to exchange it to make it right so it went into the garage can. Too bad. I usually love Maria's for their Kletiko & calamari. I ordered the pizza just to try it, but did not eat it until the next day because the kleftiko was such a big order. That was when I noticed how burnt the crust was & the cheese was totally over done...cheese should always be gooey on a pizza! I contacted the restaurant & spoke to a gentleman. I explained the whole situation to him & he said I should have called last night but again I told him that I didn't eat the pizza until today so that's when I noticed it & the train I was now calling. One of my favourite restaurants in Vancouver! I've been so many times. I hype this place up to so many people and no one's ever been disappointed. The restaurant is decorated in a coastal-style with Greek decor around. The service can be a little slow at times and depending on the day especially around dinnertime, it can get quite busy so I'd recommend calling in to reserve in those instances. Even when it's busy, it's not loud. The free bread is to die for. Perfectly toasted and just so soft. I do feel a little bad coming in with my friends every time because we abuse this complimentary policy so much and on average get around 4 bread baskets each time. The most we've ever done was 6 but you will know what we're talking about when you get it - you just can't get enough. You can ask for olive oil and balsamic vinegar but they'd have to make it for you in the back. I always get the lamb souvlaki and it's consistently great. Never been to Maria's Taverna but a buddy's been a few times and likes their lamb shoulder. They've been around since 1987 and you'll find them next door to Raisu. We dropped in on a slow Thursday afternoon (around 1:00pm). Service was friendly and our waitress dropped off a jug of water for the table. Menu consists of soups, salads, cold/hot appetizers, entrees, souvlakia, seafood, platters for two, pizza and pasta. - Bread - to whet our appetites, they brought out a complimentary basket of bread. - Kleftiko ($26.99) - lamb shoulder came off the bone but wasn't the tenderest. Roasted potatoes had a nice acidity from the lemon. Tzatziki sauce and rice were solid. Only thing I didn't enjoy on the plate was the Greek salad. - Paithakia skaras ($28.99) - lamb chops were excellently cooked. Well seasoned with a great bite. Ordered some greek food from here as it is a vancouver institution and although the food was authentic and tasty, they missed some of our order and the pizza crust was very dark. We Ordered: Moussaka: one of our favourites of the night, the layers of beef, vegetables and creamy béchamel made for a delicious bite. We loved how it tasted despite the haphazard appearance and seemingly small portion. Greek Platter: dolmanthes, meat patties, chicken souvlaki, lamb shoulder, calamari with pita and tzatiki - this one platter had a little bit of everything and our favourite was without a doubt the calamari. I asked for the fried calamari instead of the broiled and without charge, they were able to substitute it and the portion was HUGE. It was an entire platterful and it was crispy, crunchy and perfectly seasoned, easily the best of the meal. The chicken was a little bit dry and the vine wrapped meat and rice (dolmanthes) had a sauce that was very heavy but the flavours were all spot on. The lamb shoulder was a nice portion size and we enjoyed the tasty meatballs as well. The biggest letdown was how they forgot the greek salads with this platter and the presentation of the potatoes and rice was very poor. Maria's Combo - greek style pizza is meant to have a thicker crust with a mound of toppings and their pizza delivered on these accounts but the bottom of the pizza was definitely burnt. It was dark black in many spots and although this didnt affect the flavour TOO much, I didnt like the fact that I was ingesting all those carcinogens. The taste of the pizza itself was fine but we had a hard time getting over the crust. Overall, the food here is classic and other than a few overlooked mistakes, a good choice for a greek meal. read more

I was recommended to this Greek Taverna (GT) by an acquaintance from years past. There used to be an excellent GT called Panos. It was a smash hit on their Lamb Shoulder, Calamari and Moussaka. These 3 were my 'goto' dishes. The Service: very good & friendly with a smile. My acquaintance was quite familiar with Panos too, and so I was told 'they make these dishes' just like Panos. Had the urge, to at least try it out, and get my fix. Not comparable, sorry my friend. however.... The lamb shoulder dish was good. The calamari appetizer was very good, not over deep-fried and very tender inside. The moussaka? in a bowl/cup? Nope Doesn't make the cut. It's not even to be considered as traditional moussaka. The lemon greek potatoes?, overcooked and too wet just too small - even with them cut in half. Greek potatoes? using small potatoes?? Nope doesnt make the cut. Maria's serves up solid Greek food. Overall, I'd say most of their entrees hit the mark well for flavor. They also serve up items that are less common such as grilled calamari and grilled chicken livers (both good if those suit your pallet). I think their deep-fried calamari is one of the better ones in town. Service is friendly and the atmosphere is a very typical small Greek restaurant vibe. Highly recommended to try. read more

I loved this restaurant. We called at 5 Pm on a Saturday and got a reservation for 7! They say us right away and the staff was very attentive. The restaurant itself is very welcoming and they play nice music. It gave off a great environment. The food arrived very quickly and it was delicious. The potatoes were so soft and the rice had so much flavour! Meatballs and chicken were delicious. Would've liked the calamari to be grilled and maybe more prawns in the plate. A substantial portion of lamb came with side Greek salad, sautéed rice, and Greek style potatoes, definitely a plateful of food. Had the calamari with tatziki as an appetizer, crispy and tender. The Greek salad was the only disappointment, feta cheese was just a sprinkling, I was expecting something more traditional. Prices are reasonable and service is friendly and efficient. I didn't even read one review when I ordered for my first time this evening with the Mrs on her way home from a 16 hour day - another Vancouver gloomy gloomers cold ugly Thursday ;( The Lamb was gorgeous and had wonderful flavours, beautiful sides and packed clean and tight. The pizza was next level with a thicker yet almost pretzel style crust that is unique and creates a strong crust to hold a ton of great toppings. Trust me I get it. The dinner knife **GASP** It was a regular flour crust pizza. Personally, I would have preferred whole wheat. It was a simple pepperoni and cheese. My preferences are not complicated. That way, I don't have to tell people, "It's complicated." It tasted pretty decent, regardless how thick it was. I didn't choke on it. The calamari twas pretty good too. Light battering and tender squid. So if you like it thick, you may wanna go Greek, and come here (yes, that pun was intended). Came here with the family for my brother's birthday and we had the following: Pizza for my nieces - they love it! One of my nieces also had the spinach omelette and expressed how much she loved her meal today. I had the Spanakopita entree for lunch. It was so tasty. I love the rice and especially the potatoes. My brother had the Keftedes entree and also really enjoyed it. The rest of group had Kalamari Skaras and Salmon. The decor is beautiful and the warm and friendly service was much appreciated especially when we are dining with kids. I had the 'Calamari dinner'. Calamari were perfectly cooked plus the portion was surprisingly large, very delicious. I was shocked at how wonderfully tasty 'Maria's Special' dessert was - I have done much travelling in my life but I have never eaten a better tasting dessert. I had a feeling this place was going to be good, thanks to my trust in some familiar Elite's. My feeling was right, thanks guys :) This is a quaint, medium sized greek restaurat that has been in Kits for 25 years. The inside is characteristically decorated in white walls, greek photos and accessories. The two large skylights in the ceiling make it feel more open and bright, it is a pleasant atmosphere with traditional greek music. The table settings are homey and comfortable, but nice. My first impression of our server was that she was not that welcoming or friendly, but she warmed up throughout the evening and was efficient, timely and courteous. Everything was brought out quickly, nothing was forgotten, we were checked in upon shortly after receiving each dish and we felt well taken care of. We shared the hummus, which was right up there with the best I've had; smooth and creamy, but still some tiny bits of chick peas to give it enough texture, and the taste was smooth and luscious as well, not bitter at all. The saganaki was done well, perfectly cooked and served with lemon. They use goat feta, and we did not find it to be too salty. As per the recommendations, we had the chicken souvlaki which was great. A large plate with a reasonably sized portion of tender, most chicken; also, rice (average), lemon potatoes (delicious), tzatziki (very good) and greek salad (average but nice and fresh). At $16.95 for the souvlaki this is not a cheap meal, but it is on par for similar restaurants and reasonable for the quantity and quality. The rest of the prices were average. The Ek Mek (dessert, house special) was very good. Customers were couples of all ages, a few small groups and several people getting take out; it is a nice place for a casual date or catch up. Three of us decided to eat here on Saturday, August 20th. One friend ordered a particular cider. The male server brought something else. When my friend kindly explained to him she had ordered something else, he argued with her, telling her that was the drink she ordered. We could all see, and smell, that it was not. A female server came by. She apologized and brought the correct drink. However, instead of filling the glass, she walked away with the remainder in the can, despite my friend protesting. Nobody came by asking if we'd like some more water. The restaurant wasn't very busy. The male server spent much of the time going from table to table, filling glasses with water, but always avoided our table. The female server asked about an hour later if we'd like more water, but she never came back. It was about an hour and a half after we had finished eating before the female server gave us some more water, and then she never came back to check in with us. The food may have been good, but the service was very poor. We were a group of upper middle aged/young elderly customers. We weren't obnoxious, loud, drunk, or anything. I think the male server didn't like gay people. Two in our group are gay. If this is the service standard at this restaurant, I certainly would not recommend going here to eat. There are plenty of Greek restaurants with great food in this city that also provide great service. read more

LOVE MARIAS!! Eating marias platter for two could probably feed more than two as it was sooo much food. Everything was delicious and fresh, nothing we didn't like. We have been ordering from here during the pandemic and their chicken souvlaki and lamb kleftiko have been consistently delicious. The meat is tender, the potatoes and rice are full of flavour, and the portions are generous. Plus both dishes are gluten free. Our only complaint is the Greek salad is a little flavourless (needs more acid), but it's not enough to subtract a star. read more

My son and I first discovered Maria's a few years ago when he took me there for my birthday. I definitely agree there food is in my opinion the best Greek food in town. What we remembered was delicious food , a bit more expensive but worth it for the atmosphere and the food. last night Aug 23, 2021 we went again and we were not as happy with our experience. The food was up to par but more than half was gone and they are even a bit more expensive. We both ordered souvlak, when it arrived we were shocked at the quantity. I have noticed this in restaurants since COVID and I do expect we all will give a little to help each other. This bordered on offensive. We left and came home to eat. My son was so disappointed because he was treating me again since he got his first big pay cheque from his summer job. Really good! Their moussaka is my favourite. I have been ordering delivery from them for the past year and it's consistently excellent.

Me and my family decided on Maria's for our last meal together during their visit. The staff were clearly overwhelmed with the influx of customers from the Street festival, which we didn't hold against them. We ordered a Calamari appetizer which we suspected had been incorrectly given to the table beside us who ordered after us. Upon arrival of our mains we prompted for the Calamari and instead of any acceptance of a mistake the staff just tried to cover it up. We accepted this at the time in an attempt to not ruin our meals as we didn't want to have to wait longer for them to remake our mains. The servers who had originally taken our orders were sat in front of us eating their dinner and cashing out clearly happy with the tips they had made from the festivities that day. We ate a moderate portion of the calamari but most was left cold. Given the circumstances we would have been more than happy with our experience had the manager agreed to take the calamari off of our bill like we had requested. But since we had attempted to eat some she decided that they couldn't take it off and only offered 50%, this was disappointing as the food hadn't been provided in the capacity it was ordered and she again tried to brush over the error and the servers involved in the mistake had clearly clocked off, the only reason we had accepted it at the time was to not ruin our experience. The food was good but I wouldn't rush back given our experience with the employees. read more
