I love the food but there are 3 things that need to be addressed: 1) The salsa is extremely hot. It would be great if they offered two kinds with one being a milder option. 2) The booths need to be refurbished. The material(not sure if it is leather or vinyl) is cracking and splitting. 3) They are still bringing food out on chipped plates. It was like this the last time I ate there a year ago and I came back today to see if anything had changed. It hasn't. Awesome Experience!! Came here with a fairly large group. Our friends invited us and they love the food and service. The restaurant has a nice comfortable dining area and they were able to quickly accommodate our party of 10. Moises our server, was very nice and very attentive. After informing Moises it was my husbands birthday, he brought over a nice birthday dessert. He and a few servers got together to sing a lovely birthday song in Spanish. He certainly went far and beyond for us. Our group was very happy with the service he provided. Apparently, our friends have had Moises as their server on previous visits and he has all given exceptional service. The food and the margaritas were outstanding!! I've only eaten inside once, which was quite awhile ago. I didn't enjoy the food and the staff wasn't especially friendly. However, we ordered takeout recently- and it was pretty good! I had a shrimp chalupa, my friends ordered fajitas and an enchilada, plus we had chips, salsa & queso. Beans were watery, rice and queso weren't especially flavorful. I did like the chalupa, although soggy, probably because it was takeout. Salsa was good- but spicy. You could literally see the black pepper. I'd come again and try something different; but not really eager to go back anytime soon. read more

I spent my childhood in Michigan and remember with more amusement than fondness the "Mexican" cuisine of my youth. You know, iceberg lettuce, crunchy taco shells, cloyingly sweet taco sauce and overseasoned ground beef. Now that I live in Texas, I have to admit that I smirked a bit when my parents suggested going to a Mexican restaurant in Sturgis - but I played along. I'm glad I did, because the food we had at Maria's was every bit as good as what we have in Texas! We started off with chips, salsa and guacamole. The salsa was fresh and authentic, not the spiced-up tomato sauce you so often see in the Midwest. The guacamole was excellent and obviously fresh as well, with chunks of avocado. The menu is pretty extensive, with the standard selection of fajitas, enchiladas and burritos. My companions ordered dishes from this category, and were pleased with their food. It looked good to me too. A small list of items were in both Spanish and English (the rest of the menu is English only). Figuring these items must be the real deal, I picked one - the shrimp with avocado. The dish came with rice, avocado chunks and a generous portion of shrimp that was expertly seasoned and char grilled - delicious! I will definitely try something else from this list when I go back. If you want to do the same, look for the red box (I think it's on the second page). This little sub-menu doesn't have a title, but the server told me they're all dinner plates. Ask for a side order of corn tortillas - they're served warm in a foil packet. The frozen margarita was okay - I found it a little too sweet - but the portion made it a great value. Be careful ordering the large, it will tip over your table when the server sets it down, and you may tip over if you finish it. There is a "monster" size on the menu that I didn't even think of ordering. Overall, excellent value and fresh choice for Mexican food in southwestern Michigan. read more

DISSAPOINTED Had eaten her few years ago when in area and were well satisfied. Today again we were in area and decided to stop for lunch. Staff was friendly and service good but food quality sub standard. Our ordered a taco salad always a favorite when we do Mex. when server put it on table my wife and I looked at each other a small shell 1/2 filled with a handful of shredded lettuce covering shredded chicken that looked and tasted like out of a can from Sam's Club. I was far less than impressed. Upon arriving we realized that the restaurant was seriously understaffed. We were shown to a table and it took another 10 or 12 minutes just to get a menu and a glass of water. I ask for some basic things such as green chili or if they had ceviche they had neither. The nachos left nothing to be desired they had no real taste to them. d the salsa was spicy but didn't have any flavored to support it. It needed more cilantro onion and lime. I will say our food that was brought to the table was hot but took a long time to get there. We were given not silverware until we got up and asked for them and no one came back to fill our water or to ask if the food was good. We didn't receive a bill until we stood up and they realized we were ready to walk out the door. I doubt I will ever return. Moral of the story, don't waste your time or money. Sad read more

Service is really slow and the food doesn't taste as good as they used to be, our waiter was a old man and he had a really bad attitude not even because we also were latinos. I order the chicken soup it was super super salty. I think they should of ask people or warm people the amount of salt they put in the food. The queso was good and the drinks but again the waiter I don't know he's name a old man he forgot one of our drinks and assumed that we already drink it with a really bad attitude there was 4 of us and only 3 cups in the table doesn't make any sense. Bad service they should definitely look in to it because we feel discriminated by my our own race. And never came back to ask us if we needed anything else. Until we ask for the check to another employee. Never again. I can't get enough of Maria's. I've been here twice and counting the seconds before I can go again. The food is phenomenal and the staff is so friendly. We've gotten the queso both times which is incredible. Nothing ever disappoints. We also love getting to pour the chip salsa into the bowl. I really loved (and recommend!) the quesadilla con pollo. Just off the Indiana Toll Road and over the state line, this is a quite decent Mexican joint, a little unusual in style, but it would survive well in regions of the US where Mexican cuisine is thicker on the ground. My family, friends, and I have been eating at Maria's for almost a decade! Where they sometimes lack in service (they are busy even on weeknights!), they make up for it with delicious, authentic Mexican food. Maria's dish of Arroz con Pollo is a staple for us all summer, in addition to their Queso dip. Maria's has a large menu, so every pallet will find something appealing! Our favorites include the Arroz con Pollo/Pollo a la Plancha/Pollo Ranchero, the Fajita Burrito, the fajitas in general, the combination plates with enchiladas and tostadas and chiles relleno. The margaritas are great and the beer is always cold (extra napkins are needed for the frosty, icy mugs!!). Fast becoming a regular here. Salsa is great, chips served warm. I had the burrito Maria w/ ground beef and it was excellent. With the refried beans and rice I was more than satisfied. My wife had a chicken fajita that was also very well prepared. She brought the majority of it home in a box. This was our second visit since the remodel and the service has been very good. The only drawback is standing in line to pay the check as the waitstaff does not handle payment. I prefer to pay at the table. Overall, very good Mexican food in a typical Mexican restaurant local. A truly awful experience...as soon as we entered the front door, we were greeted by the overwhelming stench of sewage. I could not believe people were sitting in the restaurant eating given that smell! I did not want to stay, but the group I was with did not seem to notice it and so I thought perhaps it me. As we went to a table, I realized eating here was going to be a challenge with that odor, but didn't want to be the pest of the group so I ordered a shrimp taco salad and asked for it to be served without onions, but add jalapenos. Our waiter was copiously writing in a pad with each order that was place...like writing a lot! My taco salad came and grilled onions were hanging off of the edge of the taco shell. I thought that was odd, but thought perhaps they got dropped on the edge of the shell by something being passed over the salad. Well, the salad wasn't a salad in the true sense of the word...it was shrimp fajita mixture, which was warm in temperature, with cold lettuce thrown into it and cojita cheese on top....but no jalapenos. The mixture quickly turned into a soupy mess. I managed to choke down the shrimp, which tasted fine, but having to smell sewage as I ate each bite, was difficult to say the least. As we left to head to Dairy Queen for dessert, I asked how others' meals were and if they noticed the odor. People finally 'fessed up and said the odor was horrid and the food was mediocre at best. I should've said something as soon as we walked in the door and saved us all from that disaster of a dinner. Diners, beware...you've been warned. read more

Nope! Terrible service, loud environment, and food was only so-so. We gave them several chances to prove themselves, but it totally didn't happen. The last time we were there, it was like we were inconveniencing them (again) to be there. There was so much confusion they didn't know that we were even seated. Once we finally got a waitress (one of the guys we've had before is even worse), it was forever getting the meals. Then we had to ask for silverware! Good luck getting anything refilled. I kept trying to make eye contact with any employee but that was next to impossible. Then a long wait to get the bill. Geez... The food used to be pretty good when they first opened, but now it taste like it was prepared the other day and just waiting to be taken out of the freezer to be thrown into the oven. Was there last night and service was SOOO horrible! This was the second time we've been there and had this experience. Took about an hour to start getting our food - I say start because they brought two dishes at a time. We were finally left with one person with no meal and after it still didn't come for about 10 minutes, we had to go in search of it. Only to discover that it was nowhere to be found and they'd still have to make it. Our waiter never came back once after taking our orders. A cheeseburger that we ordered was so cold the cheese wasn't even melted. And the worst part? When we complained about the awful experience, they did nothing to compensate us. Absolutely zero! The most we got was a shrug of the shoulders and a 'sorry'. There are other choices for mexican food in Sturgis and we'll be going there from now on. Maria's is the hometown restaurant you get cravings for. There aren't many non-chain restaurants in Sturgis so it's nice to be able to take out-of-towners the Maria's. When I was younger, my friends and I would always get chicken chimichangas without realizing how bad they are for you (yet so yummy!) My go to is Vegetable F. It's a great price and a huge portion. Only complaint is how greasy the vegetable can be... that's usually not the case though. The margaritas are also a hit and a local favorite! Arroz Con Pollo is commonly ordered (at least by people I go with!) Service isn't all too great. I've had two experiences where the servers were such a delight. All other times I've had to wait a very long time to be waited on and served. On one occasion I didn't have silverware and when I tried to get some the server forgot and I waited patiently another 10 minutes until I just snagged a set from another table. If you're okay with an okay service but pretty stellar food, check it Maria's. Who knows, you might be lucky with the service! Err, gross. The floor was coated with chips when I arrived on a Friday evening. The enchiladas were surrounded by a sweet tomato paste that was not even close to being Mexican style. First of all, I will say that the food was acceptable. It was far from the best Mexican I have had - but it was farther from the worse. However, the best of food can not make up for poor service and even poorer honesty in the staff. I am unsure if they were caught off guard by an unplanned rush - but they only had two servers and one bus girl and the restaurant was rather full. I was seated right next to the path way the servers used to get from the tables to the kitchen and they walked by me at least a dozen times each before one of them finally commented he would be back for my order in a few minutes. Sitting for nearly 10 minutes and being ignored is not a great way to start the evening. I will normally give a restaurant 2 or 3 chances before I put them on my never again list and even more before I will post a negative review on line. However, this place earned the reward of not only will I not return - I recommend to others not to go either. I seldom drink even when dining out, but I decided that I would have a beer with my meal. I ordered a Miller Lite draft. I watched the server write BUD on the ticket. Then I watched him draw from the Bud Light tap and when he brought me the drink, I challenged him on it. He flat out lied that it was Miller and not Bud. I am allergic to Bud, it gives me a head ache. By the time I left, I had the headache that I have gotten for decades with in an hour of drinking any Bud product. Rather then simply say - sorry, I made a mistake and dump the beer, he wanted to save his restaurant the cost of miss pour and cost him his tip and the restaurant my business. The food is not bad. There are a couple decent servers. We've had numerous decent meals here. However, I'm currently incredibly unhappy with the management. We ate there weeks ago and were double charged for our meal. We have made numerous attempts to get in touch with a manager and given our number each time. This place use to be a great place to eat. Went there Saturday night and with only about ten people there we finally had to grab a waiter to just get our order in. When it arrived neither my wife or I got what we ordered. The food was average, but then it took quite sometime to get our bill. They charged us for a desert we never ordered.
