This neighborhood market, grocery store, resto and family owners have been around Defiance for a long time. My first encounter with this local gem was over twenty years ago on my first visit to this Ohio town, and it's still around with improvements, enhancements and is still great overall! A terrific family run business. From its jam-packed with a wide array of dry and can goods on grocery shelves, great meats, extensive local baked goods, and a much renovated and expanded restaurant and really nice Mexican-style bar! If you're in town and are in the mood for an ice-cold Dox Equis and/or Jalisco style Mexican cuisine, this the place for you! Their goodies run the gamut from an incredible Pozole to Grilled Chicken delights, to delectable Burritos to mouthwatering tacos, some terrific, refried beans and incredible chips and salsa! Stopped in recently and honestly it was just okay. The food was pretty mediocre and the service was really slow, even though the place wasn't that busy. What really bothered me was the surprise 3.5% surcharge they add if you pay with a card. That includes debit cards too. I didn't see any signs about it and wasn't told until the check came. At that point, I didn't have cash, so I had no choice. For anyone wondering, surcharges on debit cards aren't allowed under Visa and Mastercard rules. I get that places are trying to cover costs, but it should be clear up front and within the rules. I wouldn't have stayed if I knew about the extra fee--or I would've stopped at my bank across the street to grab some cash. Just a heads-up for anyone thinking of stopping by: bring cash. read more

Stopped here for lunch and was deeply impressed. Fresh ingredients prepared well. The tacos and tamales were excellent, and the refried beans, my favorite comfort food, were delicious. The ambience is convenience store/restaurant. Service is fast and friendly. If I find myself in the Defiance area again, I will be back. read more

We stopped by here on a road trip back to Michigan. What a gem! The food was fantastic and the aguas frescas were super refreshing. We highly recommend and will definitely stop by again on a future road trip. read more

True delicious authentic Mexican food! I am from California and normally Mexican food from other states tend to be white washed, but this place is the bomb! We had their birria tacos with consumé and it was one of the best birria tacos I have ever had. They do not skimp out on the meat in their tacos. I highly recommend this place for true authentic Mexican food and great service! Not only was their food good, they also have a small market with Mexican goods that are difficult to find in such a small city like Defiance. Most authentic in town. They only serve one kind of mole but it is solid. The Molcajete is nice It comes out boiling hot and there is a smaller lunch size. The tongue tacos are great and the service is prompt. read more

One of our favorite Mexican restaurants in Defiance. The food is amazing. Authentic Mexican style. We love the fajitas, tacos, fish (Mojarra Dorada), quesadillas and the soups on Fridays/weekends. Hands down, some of the best Mexican food I've had in Ohio. I had three tacos - $2.00 and 2.50 each!?! The pastor, carnitas and asada was excellent, rice was yummy and a tamale was great as well. I only got a picture of only my drink because I ate my food so quickly! read more

The place isn't fancy but it's clean and fast. This is a Mexican grocery store also. Parking here sucks. I've seen people park at the bank across the street when the bank is closed. On Wednesday they have $1 tacos. That's the best day to try all the different kinds of tacos that they offer. You can get the deal for carryout also. I love the carne asada ( steak) tacos with cilantro and onion. These are small street tacos but three of them fill me up. I ate 5 once and had to lay down for two hours, it's was just too much food. They give you slices of radishes, lime, and hot sauce on the side. read more

I'm genuinely sad it took me this long to come to La Jaliscience. It's been a cute little colorful corner store in Defiance for as long as I can remember. Years, I'm sure of it. Just recently they tore down their original store because they built a new one just next to it. I've always heard great things about this place and my step mom bought her tamales from here for family occasions. They're delicious. A friend of mine wanted to take me to lunch here today so I gotta as stoked because I had never been and wanted to see if it lived up to the hype. I'm such a sucker for local cuisine, too. The new building is clean and brightly lit and well decorated. You walk into the grocery section, take a gander. There's a lot of things to look at. Ask questions if you want, they answer :) The food was so good and authentic. A lot of things that are traditional Mexican food but you don't often see on menus in northwest Ohio! I had barbacoa & pastor tacos w/ rice and of course a Mexican Coke. Took strawberry horchata to go! The horchata was so sweet! My boyfriend had enchiladas which were pretty tasty and I tried my friends sope. I think that's what I'll order next time I come, it was so fluffy and delicious! read more
