My family and I were pleasantly surprised when we stumbled upon Maria's Place in search of breakfast. Salem itself was packed, so we were super excited when we found this gem just outside of the main hustle and bustle. We were promptly greeted when we walked inside and picked a seat. Maria's is always a great Sunday morning brunch meeting place! I'm a fan of the coffee (you can tell a lot about a diner from their coffee) and any of the specials are a sure fire bet, especially the Hungryman Special. My mother loves the asparagus and cheese omelet. The ingredients are fresh and the food comes out fast and hot. If you get a spot at the breakfast bar/countertop you get a full show watching the cooks doing what they do best, along with some good conversation. I decided to go because of Yelper reviews and the lack of a decent breakfast in the area. I was pleasantly surprised. Maria's is diner-ific where your name is always "Hon". Our waitress was brisk but efficient. I was in omelette heaven because the asparagus was perfectly cooked-a tiny bit crisp- with just enough cheese to satisfy. Home fries were not greasy with the skin still on the potato. Apple pancake was as big as a manhole cover but with a nice, tangy batter and decent apple presence-not the gooey canned kind. Maria's has greasy spoon prices and greasy spoon decor but they knock it out of the park with the fresh food. Four stars instead of five because I found a few hairs in the food. Not Only is Maria's Place incredible for breakfast... The owner is one of the most honest people I have ever come across. Last Saturday, I left wallet there. I didn't realize it until after they had closed. I went back the next morning to see if anyone had found it. No Luck. I gave my phone number but it never got passed along. Today I got a letter from Maria herself telling me she had my wallet. Not one thing missing or out of place, cash, credit cards, photos all there! I already had gone through all the steps to replace the contents, however, its the principal here!!! Great Food, Great Service and most of all great people! I would give Maria's 3 1/2 stars, but yelp doesn't allow that option. I'm comfortable bumping it up because I think some of the previous reviewers have been unfair. I was there on a busy Friday right at lunch time. We were a group of 11 women, and I was seated with my back to the wall--consequently, I could see what was going on with the rest of the customers. Despite a full dining room, we had excellent service (contrary to what the previous reviewers claimed). AND, I could see that the rest of the customers were seated, waited on, and received their food in a steady stream of activity. As for the food. Maria's is not a gourmet breakfast or sandwich place; but it is a solid place to get a traditional American style breakfast or lunch quickly. Most of my group ordered some kind of omelet--lots of spinach and feta and spinach and cheddar. I noticed that those plates were mostly empty (except for the dieters--all of whom took home their leftovers). A couple of us had grilled chicken club sandwiches which were good. (BTW: grilled chicken clubs are not on the menu, but the chef will make one for you if order it.) One person had a chicken kabab salad that was huge, and by her reckoning very good. Some points to note: The food is not fancy, but it is straightforward--you get what you order. if you want French toast, order the Texas French toast, because the regular is a bit skimpy. read more

I am a little biased as to the waitstaff since I am very friendly with them because they are Albanians and I am married to an Albanian, but they are especially nice to everyone! I typically LOVE to come to this Maria's during the college school year for a quick, cheap breakfast and it's awesome! But, I went there a few weeks ago with a couple of my friends for some breakfast and we had my dog along with us, so I called ahead to make sure it was okay to have him outside with us, and we were informed it was perfectly fine. We had gotten there and already they seemed to be bothered by the dog, even though I made sure to call ahead. I had requested a bowl of water for my dog because, at other outdoor places, they typically will bring out a bowl regardless with no hesitation. When someone who was not our waiter came out (the one that always has her hair pulled back tightly into a bun), she decided to give us attitude and say "Ya know, we're not even supposed to have dogs here, let alone give them any of our bowls..." as she rolled her eyes as let out a big sigh as she walked away. Once again, not even our waiter. I immediately asked for the check and made it clear that I did not appreciate being talked to that way when I had literally called ahead. Rude service. read more

I had to give Maria's 5 stars since on the Saturday AM we went for breakfast, I could not find one thing to complain about and the service and food were great. (not to mention the prices!!) The parking lot was almost full and the place was busy but we still managed to get a table right away. The service was the best. Have been going to Maria's Place for 8 1/2 years. It is sort of the 'Cheers' of Breakfast joints. Nearly everyone who goes in there is a regular except for late in October when it gets invaded by gangs of Halloween Tourists looking to chow off their hangovers. You are always greeted warmly and with copious volumes of freshly brewed coffee and hot, freshly, and quickly prepped food. I even went there for breakfast while in labor with one of my children and a cold plain pancake from there was what I craved a couple of days later in the hospital. My only warning is to avoid the muffins as they are decidedly uninspiring. For the truly hungry (and those devoid of fear for their arterial health) the Hungry Man is the choice for you...you will not need to eat again all day. read more

The end is near. I just paid over $30 for breakfast and you can be sure that I whined about it. This wasn't my first visit to Maria's Place but it will certainly be my last. I walked in with a friend and there were probably four or five people sitting around reading books and newspapers and drinking coffee, certainly not the hustle and bustle of years past. Three or four at the counter. Two waitresses with not a lot to do. We both ordered coffee. For breakfast I ordered corned beef hash extremely well done with two eggs over easy. I asked for cheese to be melted on top. Waitress said no problem. I said great. I then asked for a grilled bagel with cream cheese. Ok she said. She said that comes with home fries. I said great. My friend ordered a ham and cheese omelette with a side of bacon and no toast or home fries because he has a normal appetite. That's all we ordered. The food came right out. My hash and eggs had no cheese and she apologized. She forgot my home fries and she apologized. My hash was under-cooked and and my bagel wasn't really grilled very well. It had been on the grill, but that's not what grilled means. My friend's omelette had very little cheese in it. I gave one star and that's because my coffee cup was never empty, and that alone is worth one star. $36+ was my total including tip. That's too much for what we had for a crappy underwhelming breakfast. With so many great breakfast joints in the area, choose any other unless you're just looking for a breakfast sandwich for $5. My boyfriend and I love this place! The food is very good, the portions are huge, and the prices are quite low. We've done The Tavern buffet and it's definitely more food, but who really needs to fire down that much food, anyway? And for nearly 20 dollars a head there's a certain guilt you feel if you don't go up for seconds. Anyway, back to Maria's... I can't even finish one of the small meals, more than enough food. The quality is good (although the sausage patties are a bit too greasy, I'll stick to the links next time, they're more dry). The wait staff is helpful, and the food literally comes out in less than 5 minutes. Oh, and one pancake is enough for two people to split. I only wish the orange juice was fresh and not Garelic Farms. But, for the value and taste of the food this is overlooked and now our weekend breakfast spot. read more

I have now been to Maria ' s three times and it has gotten progressively worse with each successive visit. The first visit was 5 stars with delicious food and friendly service. It was the epitome of what a breakfast joint should be. The second time, the food was good but we were pushed in and out so quickly, that the whole experience, all of 30 minutes, left us feeling tense and rushed. The third time was the worst of all. Although we had a large party, it took 20 minutes for a table to come up. Once seated the waitress had to make 5 trips for drinks because she was so crazed to rush around, she wasn't patient enough to ask everyone at one time. Then, the worst mistake a restaurant can make occurred. Not all the food came at once. In fact, it took an extra 15 minutes for one person in our party to get her food. She just watched while everyone else ate. When it finally came, no apology came with it and the whipped cream which was requested to NOT be there, was glopped on top. It had to be sent back, clearly scraped off and brought back. Oh....and don't forget about the piece of hair cooked into the fried egg in someone else's meal. Not going back. read more

It is a family restaurant, where you become part of the Maria's family. We come in regularly; and, they all know your name! Thursday, you can't beat the Cornbeef dinner special. French Toast draws my cousin, who says she has gone to every local restaurant, but no one makes it like Maria's Place. Waffles with fruit and whipped cream is my weekend wake up call with their coffee, an endless cup. Prices are reasonable, so I can take the family and stop in often. We took our family from Middleton for a late breakfast a few Saturdays ago and we were so happy we did! I had the best omelet I've ever had, it was huge filled with tons of fresh veggies, my daughter had the french toast with strawberries and chocolate chips and loved it. The coffee was delicious and I can't say enough about the staff, we were greeted with smiles and love, It felt like we were at a close relatives house. Our food came out fast, the coffee kept coming and you can't beat the prices! Love this place. It has become our go to since the Salem Diner turned into an extension of the college dining hall system--ugh. Service at Maria's is super fast, food quality is consistent and well priced. Sometimes it's even so fast that we feel bad lingering over the meal to chat lol Great local place, all the mean-ass reviewers be damned. I don't know why people feel compelled to be so snotty on Yelp unless you were mistreated or made to feel uncomfortable or something. It's not the same restaurant it used to be. ever since the "new" owner took over a few years back the quality of food went way down hill. all the food taste the same. I don't think they clean the grill. I got a glimpse by mistake of the back room and It was filthy!!! My wife and I visited Salem one long weekend to explore the history of this old and historic New England town. We went in for breakfast one Sunday morning, and sat at the table. And waited, and waited and waited. We motioned to the wait staff and were told it would be just a moment. We saw other customers come in, be greeted warmly, and served food before anyone came to take our order. We finally figured out that the owner, the wait staff and the customers who were getting waited on ahead of others were all Albanian. There were other customers who came in, and they were treated just like we were.It was a throughly obnoxious and disappointing experience. I have no beef with people from any country, but this is chavinism in the classic sense of the word. If you're a regular at this place, goody for you; if you're not, stay away and save yourself a waste of time. Walking in one of the waitresses gave us a big smile and said "sit wherever you'd like"... that was the best part of my one and only Maria's Place experience. The waitress was rude, threw everything on the table including all of the menus in front of me, for me to pass out. I must've said "thank you" 5 times while she threw our coffees, silverware and food down and she never even acknowledged me. I am the type of person who tries over and over and is very polite, even to rude people that should be kissing my butt, and I regret it very often. This is one of those times where I wish I would've just given the attitude back. Less than two minutes after throwing menus on the table she came back for our order. I decided to pick the first thing I saw because telling this lady I wasn't ready would've made her even worse, she made that obvious in her mean stare. Meanwhile my cheese omelet had roughly 3 bites with cheese, the potatoes were mushy and flavorless, and the toast was hardly toasted and soaked in butter... yuck! My money sat with the check on the table for 10 minutes and she never came over to take it or tell us to pay at a register somewhere. She stood two tables over chatting it up with customers (that she obviously likes). Finally we had to ask a very nice woman cleaning where we should pay. The waitress watched us walk to the register, back over to the table to leave our tip, and never said a word. Our experience here was maddening to say the least. I will not be coming back again... Moved to Salem in 2001... Been coming here since then until 2007, service WAS excellent, food was great, and the servers were very friendly. Used to come here every Saturday with my family. In 2007 I moved away from Salem and never went back. 8 years later in 2016 I decide to come back with my family to revisit and re live "memories" made here. Worst service ever! We came at like 2 PM and they close at 3. Server rushed us to order, we weren't even sat down yet and she was asking what we would like to drink... After giving us out drinks... She asked if we were ready to order... We haven't even open the menus yet! She was rushing us so much! Food wasn't so good... Got charged $10 for a steak sandwich without onions or anything... And without fries! Fries were $3 EXTRA! Not worth it... Home fries weren't even cooked fully... They just gave it color... And as soon as 1 of us finished she already gave us our check and said "please pay this up front as my boss would like to wrap up his shift. Unbelievable! I am never coming back...
