I went to Maria's, with three dresses. Maria told me it was gonna be $175 and that they wouldn't do the work before receiving payment. They told me they only took cash. So I went to the bank around the corner withdraw $200. I gave the old man 180. And he peeled off a fiver and handed it to me. I still have the same receipt here originally gave me. When I went to go pick up my dresses today, they told me I hadn't paid. Still wondering why they did the work if I hadn't paid them according to their own policy. Well, I left with my property. I just scooped up my dresses and walked down the street because they were mine and I've already paid for the services I've received. The old followed me down the street and assaulted me. Threw me against the plate glass window of an antique store. Thankfully, the people in the store came out and defused the situation. Do not go there. They will steal from you. And possibly assault you. I'm not the only one. It's happened to other people. I think they only take cash because they are laundering money. I'm asking SLED to get involved. read more

This place is for sure OG. It is run I think by a husband and wife team and the husband is a bit salty. But the wife (Maria?) softens the blow. They are old school- maybe because technology is a bit much for them (isn't it though?). They only take cash (at the time of pickup) and they close sort of early for the 21st century- 4 pm. Keep those two things in mind and you won't go wrong. I dropped off a pair of my husband's dress pants to be shortened. I had been worried about the fact that this pair of pants was too long and that he didn't want to make the time to go to get measured to get them altered. A friend of mine gave me the idea of bringing them in with a pair of pants that is the right length and that's what I did! Maria's husband wasn't too happy about it because the styles were different but that's OK. I get it that he wants it to be right and he doesn't understand a man who doesn't value the correct length of his pants- I do get that. I came back with the hand written receipt on the date they wrote to come back with the cash they wrote to pay. It all worked out. read more

I am absolutely shaken and at a loss for words after what happened today. My mother was physically assaulted by the owner of this business over a payment dispute--despite the fact that she had clearly paid weeks ago. We had their own handwritten receipt confirming this payment, yet they still refused to return her expensive dresses after she had already paid over $400 in alterations. They insisted she pay another $400 because they "didn't remember her." When she attempted to take back the dresses she rightfully paid for, the owner physically pinned her against a wall. I was horrified. I went back inside to retrieve the receipt to protect her and clarify the situation, and the owner attempted to strike me in the head with his phone. It wasn't until his wife stepped in that the violence stopped. This experience was traumatic. We are pursuing legal action, and I am posting this in hopes that anyone else who has had a similar experience will come forward. Please message me--we want to pursue a joint legal case if others have been harmed as well. What happened today was not just unacceptable--it was criminal. read more

When I picked up my pants from being hemmed (3 weeks late) I found a hole in them. When I asked about it the employees told me I was wrong, there is nothing they would do about it, and eventually to get out. This was the worst customer experience. I have been to Maria's twice now -- once for a dress for my wedding welcome party and the second time for a jumpsuit for a bachelorette. The walk-in service is super convenient and Maria is super fast. She is also very knowledgeable and points out issues you didn't even know you had. One of my garments had a zipper with no hook and eye, so she is adding one so it doesn't break on me. I called ahead to make sure they could turn the garments around in time and they did a great job on both occasions. They are cash only so make sure to bring some. read more

The last time I brought something to be altered, a suede jacket, when I picked it up there were two large oil stains on the suede that were not there the day before when I was in to test fit. I didn't know an alterations place could be so bad. Even if you are close by, do not go here. I see why they make you pay cash up front-- they are overpriced and they do not do good work. I went for a bridesmaid dress to get taken in and hemmed, it was $150 and it was still too big when she was done. Not sure how you manage that when you pin it. Had to wait there to have her do it two more times, obviously both rush jobs. I ended up just having to get a new bra to get it to fit, because it was strapless and you can't have a friggen loose strapless gown. They wouldn't give me my money back for taking it in poorly. On top of it all, the older lady (Maria perhaps) had such an attitude. If 4 weeks isn't enough time just say so, I'll go somewhere else! Go to Needle and Thread in North Charleston instead. Faster, cheaper, better quality and they're nicer. I wish I had gone there first! read more

I have gone here over the years, but it has been quite a number of years since the last time. Tried another shop on James Island, but this is the "go to" place even though it might be a bit more expensive. On this last visit, it was something fairly simple. One belt loop (in the front) of the trousers on my suit popped loose and needed to be attached back. So, in I go. $5 and 5 minutes later, all is fixed. Never had them fix something on the spot, but they certainly did this time. A crowded little shop but quite active with four people helping everyone that walks in the door. I asked Maria's to cut a v-shape along the sides of a shirt dress, and rehem, which required added fabric for backing (which they provided). Also asked them to open up the sleeves a little. It came out great! I would highly recommend and will be back again. :) read more

I am so dissatisfied with Maria's Alterations. I went in to have pants hemmed. I came back to pick them up and they were still too long and the owner acted like she had no idea how this could happened . She was the same person who measured the jeans when I originally dropped them off. She then proceeds to tell me to come back in 2 hours after measuring and pinning them yet again. These very expensive jeans were literally hacked short (2 inches too short now) and the stitching line (picture below) isn't even close to straight. I can't even wear them now, so I am out hundreds of dollars now. What a shame! Not only is the work they do terrible. They are so rude and unprofessional. I just moved here amd was looking for someone to do - or to suggest a place - that does alterations for something other than just clothing. I have some pillow cases that were to large for the pillow inserts and just needed to have them more fitted. I walked into Maria's alterations with the pillows and the man behind the counter said nothing to me just shook his head 'no' with his arms crossed. Wasn't friendly and wasn't helpful. The hours are horrible and not posted correctly on the door. They are too expensive. Simple hem shouldn't be $28. They don't cover your garment with anything so when I left it had started raIning and my dress got drenched. They only accept cash but it doesn't say that anywhere. And overall they are super rude. Needed some alterations on my wedding dress. Silk bottom that needed bustle and some hooks to connect bottom to top. Maria is straight and to the point but also very nice. Called to schedule pick up 3 weeks later. Lovely results. Perfect, easy bustle. Dropped off an item for a simple alteration. Brought it in on a hanger. When I picked it up they took it off the hanger and handed it to me, basically in a ball. I go here for all of my "beyond basic" tailoring needs (and many of the basic ones, as well) and go elsewhere for hugs and sympathy. Other reviewers aren't wrong. You're not going to get warm and fuzzies from Maria and her husband, but the work they do is top notch. I've had several jeans, skirts, shirts and dresses brought there to be hemmed or taken in. Everything has always turned out just perfect. There's a small changing room inside that makes it easy to swap clothes and have Maria pin them where you'd like. That's a big win if you've been to some other tailors around town who make you change in the bathroom or an uncomfortably public changing space. The prices are decent. Just recently, I had 3 pairs of jeans hemmed and a button sewn back on to a pair of slacks for my husband. That ran me $44. The turnaround time isn't great. Usually about two weeks, so plan ahead. They're also not going to give you a call if it's ready early. Mr. Maria writes a date on the receipt, and that's your cue to come back to pick up your duds. Just remember to bring your receipt, speak clearly and don't make eye contact as you pick up your perfectly tailored attire for a reasonable price. read more

Believe the bad reviews. At first the family owned operation is friendly. But when they gave me my invoice and told me to come back a few weeks later to try on my pants for the hem, they were not transparent that I would have to pay MORE money for their "extra work. When I expressed my concern all they could state is "we do not do work for free and the invoice states 'do not hem'." When I continued to press, the husband came in and said "take your tux the way it is, go to a different alteration shop because if we we going to do it now, I'll charge you $100". They were very rude in their service and non apologetic about not explaining their invoice or process. The shop has no price charges posted and expects the customer to understand what is going on. read more

Because these people only operate in cash if you have a dispute YOU ARE SCREWED. I took 3 items in on 3 different dates. Paid cash the first two times(luckily had it on me) and received a ticket that had "paid" written on it. The third time was a different experience. I showed up without cash and was told to go to the Chase ATM in Windermere plaza by the intransigent man working at the shop. I did, and returned within 10 minutes to PAY THEM. Which I did. For whatever the reason "paid" was not written on my receipt ticket, and it was not marked as "paid" in their dubious cash ledger which conveniently contains no dates. This is their basis for calling me a liar, despite me showing them a bank account screenshot of $100 withdrawn from that ATM on the day I dropped off items 3. The subsequent "conversation" was filled with accusations that I was trying to pull a fast one on them over a $63 dollar tailoring job. The same man, when I showed up the day before claimed I "had already picked up my vest" and to "check my house" before a different employee produced my vest from a back room. I asked was it possible someone simply made a mistake, I was laughed at and told that the "ledger doesn't lie". Fraud or ineptitude, either way go, only if you are the most desperate person on Earth in need of tailoring should you ever go here. read more

Unfortunately I had an awful experience here. They were extremely inefficient and sloppy. I brought in two items: a dress I had made that I wanted finished and hemmed and another dress I wanted taken in. They said they would have it finished in two weeks. I said well I'll be away then how about if I come back in three weeks? Giving them an extra week. I also paid in full. I returned in three weeks and not only could they not find my two items; when they finally found them exactly where I had left them three weeks earlier; they had not been touched. You can imagine my shock let alone disappointment. They appeared very disorganized and not in the least apologetic which really surprised me. I was thinking how do these people stay in business? Well, they gave some excuse and said it would be ready in three days. I said, listen, You appear overwhelmed here; I will come back in a week. Long story short when I returned the second time they weren't ready then either. I felt I gave them fair and sufficient time to finish my items. When I finally picked up my two dresses they had done a terrible job and I've had to take them elsewhere to get fixed. Have had nothing but bad experiences with this place. And shame on me for continuing to use them but the location is just so convenient. Not only are they unfriendly, they are unorganized and never have your garments ready on the day promised. Most recently I had a blouse altered. First off, they charged me $36 to have it hemmed! Pick up date was for Thursday at 2pm. I told Maria, the owner that I was going out of town that day and she reassured me it would be ready by 2. So I rushed there after work so I could pick it up before we headed out of town. All four employees could NOT find my blouse and they all rushed around the shop frantically searching for it. After 30 plus minutes of me standing there waiting they found it at the bottom of a clothes pile UNFINISHED, wrinkled, and dirty. They said "oh wait five minutes and it will be done." I was furious. My blouse was an expensive blouse and I did not want them rushing to finish so I picked it up after I returned from vacation. Fast forward to this week. Went in to pick up something else I had altered. Why did I use them again?! Same thing happened! Couldn't find my garmets and when found they were not ready....and this was one day after promised pick up day. Highly recommend Island Alterations if you live in this area. Easy parking. Sweet lady owns it and she always takes pride in your garmets and has your stuff ready on date promised. read more
