I absolutely love their slice-your-own fresh bread machine and use it with their heritage grain sourdough bread. It took me a few tries to get it right, but now it's easy! The check-out lines were incredibly long so since I had only a few items today, I went to the self-checkout. There were probably 20 people in line ahead of me, but since there are many self-check-out machines, the line went fairly quickly.

I only needed a few items but they were pretty easy to find. (Somehow, the candle I spotted was not a need - nor something I bought - because it was an absurd $32.) The staffing is well organized on the "floor," with lots of people who can help you politely and efficiently. Sadly, the registers themselves are pretty understaffed, which made the experience take longer than it needed to for my single-digit items.

She said on phone that she already told me it's going to be AFTER 1:30PM (not at), and that nothing is going to change. SHe indiciated she's the only one there. Why does *this* Jewel not staff enough pharmacists to fulfill demand? Also, why are the pharmacists so rude?

Sunset Foods is pretty common of a locally owned grocery store that has a few fancy things. Common items are found elsewhere. The inside has a restaurant which is basically a grill with premade items and stuff. Convenient for the area because there's no other places around for groceries. It's got a pretty interesting history about it. This is the second location which opened up in 1961 and there are a few others. A place one only goes to because it's close by. The selection is pretty basic and you can find mostly all the products here for cheaper in the other stores. A lot of local products is a great thing about it. The prepared food options include fried chicken and sushi. Of course it's the kind of stuff found in most grocery stores worth shopping at. There's also a grill where you can get meals. Got to say it's proud of having local items. It's just basic as far as selection it seems. There's higher prices but if you like independent stores this is okay to check out or whatever.

However, I feel that the selection of items, freshness of produce, and general pricing isn't as good as what it once was. While I enjoy going here for ready-to-eat items, I find myself going elsewhere for dry, canned, and other goods.

Although the self-checkout area had a different staff each time I went, the staff I encountered were all friendly and helpful. In the most recent trip, a staff named Marty even came up to me to say "Hello, how are you?" This gesture really set the tone for a happy checkout. Right after Thanksgiving, I saw a sign on sweet potatoes advertising 29 cents a pound with digital coupon and the Mariano's loyalty card, which was an excellent deal.  So, I called my husband to clip the digital coupon online with the home computer while I was getting some sweet potatoes.  However, my husband could not find the coupon on Mariano's website.  I saw a staff working in the produce department who looked like a manager, named Matthew, and told him about the situation.  He found that the deal had just expired even though the sign was still posted.  He still graciously honored the discounted price. At self-checkout, a staff named Meredith gladly honored the price as well without needing to verify it with Matthew.  Although I was only saving about $2, this kind of trust, friendliness, and flexibility were great customer service and made me happy. During the same visit, I noticed that Mariano's had replaced all of their shopping carts with brand new plastic ones.  These new shopping carts were clean and sturdy, and very smooth and easy to maneuver. I like that Mariano's really works on enhancing customers' shopping experience.   Kudos to the Northbrook management and staff for doing such a great job.
