While bagging my purchases at the self-checkout station at Mariano's Glenview West store, I had a chance to chat briefly with Eric, the friendly associate who assists customers there. According to Eric, the store is now set to close on August 8, moving up from the original closing date of August 22. That's just a month away! He mentioned that Kroger is swapping the closing date of this location with the one in Buffalo Grove. Eric assured me that he'll still have a job with the company, but his current commute is just one minute, and now, he doesn't yet know where he'll be reassigned. Even before hearing that the store would be closing two weeks earlier than expected, I was already feeling nostalgic. I've shopped at this Mariano's for over 10 years. It's huge, clean, and rarely overcrowded--maybe that's part of what hurt it from a business perspective. I've taken a few photos to help remember it, and I know I'll miss this place a lot. read more

A large Mariano's with a diverse set of products much like their other locations. The parking lot is quite large and not too hard to navigate around as businesses surrounding it don't really cause much cross traffic. The inside is clean, with some nicer displays and dining areas that I don't always see at Mariano's locations. The prices are fairly competitive, with plenty of items on sale though some require fairly large quantities before the sale price is triggered. Though the store is enormous, products aren't grouped too tightly so there is plenty of space to navigate around the store (though, I would prefer a bit more aisle spacing as some areas seem to have a good amount of unused space). This also means that the selection is large, but not as enormous as if they used less space for making attractive displays and instead packed products more tightly on the aisles. Checkout is fairly quick, with a good number of self checkout kiosks available to use. read more

This my go to place in the area. The prices are reasonable and the food is great. Sucks that this location had to close.

Mariano's itself is fine, my review is more for their sushi counter. This location always gives me a hard time when asking to make a speciality roll. They prefer you just pick something they have already made. What's the point of a menu if you're too lazy to make the roll requested. Anytime I ask for brown rice there's always an excuse. We haven't cooked it yet, oh you'll have to wait an hour for the brown rice, and today a new one we don't carry brown rice anymore. Not sure why because it's still on their menu. It used to be a convenient stop for sushi. I will no longer waste my time with them and hopefully the readers of my post will not either. read more

Of the larger chains of grocers around Chicago, Mariano's is one of my favorites. I've been to the Glenview location several times and have yet to write a review. I was there again yesterday, giving me a good reason to write one. First, Marianos is also one of the more expensive grocers. Their pricing is generally higher than even Jewel's. Their selection is much larger and much more diverse. They also have many gourmet foods, precooked foods, excellent baked goods, a coffee bar, and wines. They also have a large selection of lovely produce. This location has a nice dining area, so if you want to pick out food and eat it there, and there is nice seating. (Unfortunately, the beautiful views from the floor-to-ceiling windows of the parking lot.) We did find a few good deals we couldn't pass up. For example, finding freshly caught Ahi Tuna for the price they had set was unbelievable. I am always impressed by their fresh meat and fish selections. Yesterday, the variety of fresh fish available was limited, however. So, while I like the store and always find things to buy, their pricing is generally a factor in deciding to go to Mariano's or elsewhere. In the days when it was family-owned, things were more reasonable. Those days ended a number of years ago when they were sold to a large grocery chain. read more

Oh no...this (I believe flagship) location took a steep and rapid nosedive. I like grocery shopping, even at an imperfect location, but especially here. This was until my recent visit. The first problem was crappy produce. The cucumbers felt old and easily bendable. The bell peppers were old as well. At one point, I kid you not, a man made eye contact with me and said "wow, this produce really sucks, huh?" and I agreed. There were two packages of romaine hearts left, and neither looked very good. I asked someone at the store, and he said that more romaine would come in the next day. Romaine is a common type of lettuce, and there should have been a bit more by 5pm on a weeknight, not quite closing time yet. It was hard to find some items, not really due to any shortages, but because there were logistical challenges. I couldn't find certain OTC medications (not the most urgent ones, more of a "stock up for future use" thing). The seltzer was in its usual spot, but then more seltzer was in one of the cooler sections near the jell-o and other unrelated items. Also, moving from aisle to aisle was a chore because there were tons of unloaded boxes and pallets of goods making many aisles an obstacle course. It shouldn't be that difficult to move around the store, and I feel bad for customers who have limited mobility. There were very few people working in the aisles, so it was borderline impossible to find help (staffing shortages have been alleviated elsewhere...just not at this location?). I went from the wine section to the checkout, asked the nice lady there if I could have someone help me with wine, and she paged someone. When I was back in the wine section, searching for sulfite-free wines, another worker came over to me and apologetically said that the wine person was not there Mondays or Wednesdays. This is super random to me. I think he is an outside contractor, but what gives? The worker shrugged and said "sorry, I don't know about wine." I did not buy any wine. Later, while walking around, I saw an employee tucked behind the inactive checkout counters, scrolling on her phone. OK then! I'm doing 2 stars instead of 1 because the people who work there are overall kind and inviting. In the checkout aisle, at first, they only had one person scanning and bagging, which is slow and makes me feel bad for that person. However, the one woman scanning and bagging was very efficient and super nice. Then someone joined her and did the bagging. Both women were so nice that I felt better about my errand-turned-chore. Additionally, there are good deals to be found wherever you look, so it's not the type of grocery store where you feel like your money is being lit on fire for no reason. I also am frustrated with something I saw at another Mariano's before (silly me, I thought it was just a one-off). Two chipper AT&T salespeople stand at the front, making eye contact with anyone they can, and trying to sucker them into a conversation about their phone plan ("heyyyy!!! Do you want a new phone plan?!?!?!?"). I always find this grating, tacky, and too pushy. If I want something, I'll go over to your setup thingy and ask! It's silly that Mariano's has this going on. It feels intrusive and slimy. They should stop this. read more

Ordered 2 pumpkin pies for Thanksgiving. On Thanksgiving day when I went to get the 2 pumpkin pies I ordered and 3:45, the time that I had specified on my order, I was handed 2 pies with expired freshness dates which the assistant manager told me he could not sell When I asked why my order was not appropriately filled (there were no pumpkin pies available to sell to me at that time) the assistant manager told me this happened because I placed my order with someone in the bakery department rather than with him!) so...no pumpkin pies available to bring to Thanksgiving dinner. I haven't been to this Mariano's before, and in general, I'm a huge fan of the place. This review is more about their catering, and to sum it up, like the rating, "Meh, I've experienced better." A lot better. The catering here was rather in disarray. I called earlier for some good ol' fried chicken and was told it would be ready by the requested time of 615PM and to ask the peeps at the deli. I arrived at the Mariano's at 630PM and went to the deli counter. The person greeted me promptly and told me I had to go to the "other" deli counter. OK, cool... no problem. I got to the other deli counter, and was told I had to go to the BBQ counter, because it was fried chicken. OK... still, not that big of a deal. I got to the BBQ counter, and stood there. And stood there. And stood there. I guess the BBQ counter was in eyeshot of the dining area, where other Mariano's employees were eating their lunch/evening din-din because after 635PM, I hear on the intercom "Customer assistance needed in Todd's BBQ". Another Mariano's employee, on his lunch break, said someone was coming. I get it... you're on lunch. I'm not mad at cha. Waited.... waited... a manager with a store handheld walks by and pages for assistance again. 640PM now. Finally someone walks behind the counter and asks what I needed. I said some fried chicken yo. Dude apologizes, and I see him walk over to the "other" deli, and return in a couple of minutes with the boxes of fried chicken. Whole ordeal took close to 15-minutes. When I'm at work I sneak over for lunch,the salad bar is awesome, they also have sushi,burgers, bbq , Mexican, even if you want a filet just go to the butcher and they will cut and cook for you. This Mariano's is huge. Like... WHOA. Apparently it's the biggest location (so far). My husband and I were in the area and wanted to find some food before hitting the road but couldn't agree on anything. I remembered this shopping center/Mariano's opened recently and suggested grabbing something to eat from their hot/salad bar. (I used to work at another Mariano's a few years ago, so I have familiar and find memories of this awesome chain.) But wow, was not expecting this to be so big! Half of Mariano's was the regular grocery selection (we didn't wander over there but it looked like all the other Mariano's locations) and the other half was numerous food stations and bars for all your dine-in needs. I LOVED all the food stations --- the deli, the bakery, the glass-enclosed cheese area, the candy bar, oysters, sushi, pizza, BBQ, hot foods, salad bar, the huuuuge coffee/gelato bar, the wine bar, the raw vegan area, etc. That last one was awesome to find. There aren't too many groceries that have a focus on raw vegan foods. The wine bar amused me a bit. Who comes here to sit and sip on wine? There WAS someone sitting there, so I suppose some people do. And in the dining area, what seemed like a group of Japanese businessmen were enjoying their hot meals and drinks. Mariano's is generally a four or five-star grocery (in my opinion). However, this one lost a star because although the dining area was kind of awesome, it was a bit confusing and overwhelming. You could wander around and select things you wanted but then had to circle back to find the registers to pay for them. Also, the employees were not as friendly as I thought they should be. I didn't get the Mariano's 'experience.' Maybe things have changed in the past couple years. My husband and I grabbed our hot foods (along with a fresh juice and white chocolate truffle for me) and enjoyed our meals before hitting the road. I'm glad we were able to stop here and check it out. If we had more time, I would have lingered a bit longer at each station (and maybe spent more money). I went by the Northbrook Mariano's on the way back to Chicago. 2 people I know gave rave reviews about this store so I thought I would check it out. From the outside it looks like any other Mariano's. After going in it becomes apparent why this store is so much different. This Mariano's has all of the same merchandise as the other Mariano's, but offers so much more. They have a much larger gourmet cheese section w/large models of cheese balls hanging from the ceiling. A huge display of gourmet cheeses, prosciuttos & salamis. There is a large selection of gelato along with a case of different gelato pops. A coffee bar, wine bar, deli, salad bar, sushi bar, olive bar, and a huge bakery. When I have a little more time I'm probably going to take another trip out to this Mariano's and spend a little more time browsing through the store read more

A fresh oyster bar, sushi bar, salad bar, soup bar...lots of bars! Gelato, fresh ground coffees, an incredible delicatessen, an amazing butcher shop. Aisles and aisles of food from around the world. It's as if Amazon.com opened a grocery store! The staff is very friendly and helpful. Allow yourself an hour, or more, and explore this emporium of food. Pack a sandwich from the deli! It's the epitome of grocery stores. The palace. The Carnegie Hall of supermarkets. Watch out Jewel, watch out Whole Foods! There's a new sheriff in town! It was jam packed on opening day. Some complained about cash register malfunctions, but these opening day hiccups will be resolved quickly. Live music at the front of the store! Pharmacy! Wine! Booze! I love Mariano's. Great concept, superior customer service. The newest and largest of the Mariano's chain of grocery stores in Chicagoland. I could find an excuse to come here several times a week. They have something for everyone, and the most tantalizing of a BBQ joint! The fresh oyster bar is tempting along with the lovely assortment of pastries. I tried the gelato bar which was hand-dipped. I believe if you see something you want to try - Mariano's will let you if you ask their associates. And if you go there before a meal - I think you'll want to just try absolutely everything. I love this Mariano's! Especially since it's down the street from my work so it is super convenient to pick up a quick lunch. Recently though they took away some things at the fresh food section like the oyster bar and wraps. Things I love at this store: freshly squeezed orange juice, fresh guac, pineapple, soups, and the morning shakes. (Still have to try their sushi!) All locations have a huge bakery with all different kinds of treats and there is a wine tasting bar as well. Location is good- right in the strip area where LA Fitness is and places to eat like Naf Naf and Chipotle. Parking maybe tight because some people use the parking if they are going to the gym if there are no closer spaces. My work has ordered breakfast from here before which turned out pretty well- sandwiches, bars, pastries and fruit. All tasted fresh! read more

This Mariano's location is always very clean and the shelves well stocked! I'm really happy to see the sushi area open again. The sushi is always so fresh and they guy helping us is always so nice and helpful. He's also very knowledgeable about his department and what he is preparing. So, here's a shout out to Justin in sushi! The cashiers are really nice. It's just a great Mariano's! I love doing my grocery shopping here. The produce is always fresh and the store is always super clean! You also will never have to wait in a long line at check out! They also always have great options for quick dinner ideas. Organized and clean grocery store. Pharmacy workers are nice and very cooperative. Obviously, locations are great, I repeat that one more time! I have one right near my home! The grocery prices are reasonable and the home cooked meals are very tasty! I was surprised at how good their meatloaf was and their spicy chicken wings were very flavorful! Great selection of products including all you could think of in organic varieties. They also sell flowers and plants and there is a nice bakery. They have an amazing selection of wines from all over the world too! the wine and alcohol section are crazy huge. I had good help when I needed it and was able to check out. A one stop grocery store for all your needs. Their customer service is consistently above and beyond. Almost every single one of the employees in this store are so helpful and kind. If you call and ask anything that you need they'll let you know promptly whether they have it or not. And it's always a pretty quick in and out. The store set up is convenient. I've been shopping here for quite a few years as it's convenient for me. Not quite as good as the first few years. I'd prefer it to Jewel because the prices are LOWER than Jewel, and lower than some others. Both good and bad here. Some good sales such as on pre-cooked salmon, once in a while. Sometimes good deals on Stauffers meals, such as 5 for 10. That's good since I like Stauffers. Hot bar used to be better -- the best item was definitely the wings! They used to serve fantastic chicken wings and I would always grab those. But lately they've disappeared entirely. Off the menu, despite the fact that the hot bar cost has increased. The second best was, for me, the Pot roast. But again, lately some weird thing such as they mix in a whole lot of potatoes with the beef so you have to carefully search around for meat. Strange. Aside from that, the hot bar is a decent value, and some variety. Produce, okay but my wife and I notice that bananas are always banged up with bruises as if the vendor threw them into the bins? Store in general, they clutter up the aisles with displays. Honestly, you can barely make your way with your cart through some of the aisles. I'm sure these displays bring in some extra revenue for the store but make it difficult to get around. Heinen's is classier, they don't do that. The people working deli are nice, always pleasant. Most of the employees that are serving customers are pleasant, so no complaints. read more

Yes I'm a fan of Mariano's and this store is the biggest and best one I have been in. It's almost a food court inside a grocery store. You want your meat or fish purchase grilled? They will grill it for you right in the store while you watch then take it to one of several tables to chow down. They have every kind of 'bar' you'd ever want... wine, BBQ, oyster & shrimp, vegetable, sushi, salad, soup, hot meals, and a fabulous meat and cheese shop that is large and enclosed in glass walls. It's another store within the store. The sushi bar has counter seating like in a restaurant and so does the oyster and BBQ bars. I'm sure I'm forgetting something in the 'restaurant' area. Kind of hard to see and find since it's set back from the intersection of Willow road and Sanders and the address is misleading though I did see Capital drive on Google maps. If you see a CVS or the LA Fitness your in the right place. read more

Mariano's bails me out when other grocery stores aren't open. I will admit that Mariano's is not my typical grocery store. I have my favorites that I go to on a regular basis. However, the hours that it is open is a HUGE bonus for me. I greatly appreciate their early hours. Although I appreciate their early hours, I don't have the Mariano's love that so many other people do. One time I went early for donuts... after 7:00 am. I specifically went there. Their donuts are so soft, delicious, and as big as your head! BUT there were NO donuts. None!! :( I had to go to Dunkin'. ) The other times I have stopped by they had had what I needed. Their prices can be high, I think. The service is not the friendliest. I'd rather do self-serve here for that reason alone. It's nice to ha e a grocery store open early, but I don't enjoy going to Mariano's. read more

It was my first time in this grocery store and it looks clean, has spacious aisles, everything is organized and it seems well stocked. It was pretty big to and there were a lot of sections. I found this international goodies section and it was easy to know which international country the goodies were from because it has flags that are hanging on top of it. They also have fresh selection of produce and meats. the problem was I wanted to buy this certain chocolate for my sister as a treat for her but they have no available stocks for it, good thing is that they still have a lot more good choices and when I gave it to her she also loves it too. read more

This place just seems to keep going downhill. The weird thing is that they start wrapping up really early here--like well within working hours. If you stop by in the evening to pick up an individual pastry (ie bagel) or a salad for the next day, don't bother. Everything is put away WAY ahead of closing time. read more

I used to like shopping here at lot when it first opened. Friendly and helpful workers, and well stocked fresh produce items. In the past few months, the service quality has declined significantly. I used to get great help from the produce area. Not anymore. Now, they acted like I was a bother when I asked for a simple price check (because the price sign was missing). If they prefer to chitchatting among them, rather than helping a paying customers, then, please go get another job. Do not work in a supermarket. Quality of the produce, especially the fresh vegetable section, has also declined drastically. It used to be on par Whole Foods fresh produce section. Not anymore. I had stopped shopping there in recent months. Mariano's magic is gone at this location. That's a shame. I used to look forward to my grocery shopping there. I generally like Mariano's. I can get most everything I need with the exception of pet supplies. I believe their prices are fairly competitive. All of the employees are good. I am most familiar with the baristas as I meet my friends for coffee there 1 morning each week. We do enjoy meeting there but are sometimes disturbed by shades not being drawn and thus having the sun in our eyes as well as by random noises (an alarm for cooking food going off). read more
