I am really in love with the Mariano's chain. Being a Napervillain (yes, villain), this location is the closest to me. The customer service is off the chain, the food court is boss, and when I went there two weekends ago, I had so many free samples that I was almost too full to partake in the salad bar for lunch. Almost. To expand on the food court, it has a salad bar, pizza, sushi, soups...there's a ton to choose from. There's also a gelato place, which is a great feature. This place pales a bit to the Wheaton location and it still feels a little bit like a Dominick's, but I will take it! Also, I got a rose from the cashier. Pretty much like the Other Mariano's we have been to, which means excellent! We were there shortly after they opened and the staff didn't know exactly where everything was. I asked Ray were an item was. He kind of said where he thought it was. He then went off on his own while the wife and I continued to shop. He appeared a few minutes later and took us directly to the item in question. So while we shopped he had gone off to find the item, came back to find us in a different part of the store and took us to the item. Now that's 5 star service! My favorite coffee is Seattle's Best. Target stopped carrying it recently. To our pleasant surprise, Mariano's has it, Yea! Also, their gelato is excellent. Try the hazelnut. It's just like eating fresh nuts. read more

I like Mariano's just not every aspect of it. When I first walked in I was underwhelmed. I kept hearing all these great things and it was kinda meh. Basically the regular grocery stuff (like packaged products, etc) are just okay. Where this place really shines is in its specialty departments and customer service. First of all the meat and seafood departments are phenomenal. There are not a lot of places that have seafood, let alone great seafood. Mariano's hits the mark on this. Every time I go in here the fish looks fresh and the selection is awesome. They get an extra plus for also carrying both Wellfleets and Littlenecks. The oysters were so fresh, they tasted just like I was back on the east coast slurping down the little bastards. Prices are comparable to other stores and I've never had an issue with the quality of the seafood like other places. The guys behind the counter are really great making sure that the product is packed for the ride home. The meat is equally excellent. Everything looks and tastes fresh. Yeah a little more in price but you can really tell the difference. Customer service is the best out of any store. Whoever is managing and training the staff deserves a big kudos. Everyone is well informed about the products (meat and seafood guys deserve an extra thumbs up). I am also in love with the gelato bar. The peach flavor is by far my favorite. If you have a Mariano's card, you get a free large one after your tenth purchase. And yes, I'm really close to getting my free gelato. read more

My review will be regarding their Gelato. Gelato is made with only five to eight percent milk fat, making it a healthier alternative. My two faves are mango and coconut. The Gelato is worthy of 5-stars. Most of all, it is all of the wonderful crazy cacophony of flavors that makes the Gelato amazingly delicious! I enjoyed a medium mango Gelato over the weekend at another Mariano's location. However, their Gelato is consistent no matter what. They have excellent Gelato which is refreshing on a warm muggy summer day. If you haven't tried their Gelato yet give it a try. They also offer a "mini" size which is the perfect size for me, but this weekend for the first time, I had a "medium" Gelato. It was/is very reasonably priced, and a very good value. Gelato is churned differently than ice cream and contains less air. Despite its lower fat content, Gelato boasts a creamy consistency. When it is done right, it is thick, dense and elastic, which is the case at Mariano's, but what truly distinguishes Gelato is its taste. There is no comparing it to ice cream or frozen yogurt, because this Gelato is in a class of its own. P.S. Their freshly made sushi, for $7.50, is outstanding. I recommend the spicy salmon. Spent over 20 minutes trying to check out. First was in line (only one person checking people out with a huge line). Most people seemed to be checking out from self-checkout. So I put back a produce item and began checking myself out. The chip reader wasn't working so my light was flashing forever with only two women working. Tried walking over to customer service to get more assistance. It was only two ladies trying to assist over 20 people checking out. This is big box retailers these days. I was really looking forward to the long awaited Mariano's that was to replace the old Dominick's. Upon first visit, I realized that the prices are higher than I expected. I enjoy the variety and selection, just a bit on the pricey side. The layout is great, the salad bar has a great selection and is reasonably priced. The reason I am giving 2 stars is that, I purchased a can of refrigerated Pillsbury Croissants the first week of October, got home, and the expiration date on the can was July 15th. I almost fed this expired product to my little children! I took it back for a refund (store credit) and they were great about it. THEN, on Saturday October 11th, I bought a block of Feta Cheese. I cooked with it on Sunday, and then today (Weds, Oct 15th), I took it out for lunch and it smelled rancid. Checked the expiration date: October 8th. 3 days PRIOR to when I purchased it. Granted - my bad for not checking the date before I left the store, but now this is the second time I have purchased expired product. And this time, I now have an explanation for why I have been feeling queasy and have had the runs (sorry TMI) the past couple of days. Most likely the expired cheese that I ate on Sunday making it's way through my system. I'm not going to take the time to return this product or complain to the store, I simply am too busy for that. However, I will think twice, maybe 3 times before I shop at Mariano's again for perishable foods. I would be willing to go back to Whole Foods, just to ensure that I am getting quality, unexpired product. When you're going "full blown" grocery shopping, sometimes you're not thinking about having to check EVERY SINGLE expiration date. Solid Marianos. Of course, this one is an old Dominick's, so it doesn't quite look like the fancy built up locations in other cities; however, they did a great job with this location and the smaller space. The store is set up really well. It's easy to navigate and for the most part set up with common sense. I always love going into grocery stores that the layout makes no sense, and it takes you two hours to shop because you can't find anything. Of course, Mariano's is well known for all of their fresh, easy take out food, and baked goods. This location does not disappoint by any means. read more

Mariano's makes what can be a daunting errand, a pleasure. You are always greeted with a friendly face that is offering fresh juice right at the front door. Throughout the store you will have to opportunity to try other fresh foods made in house ranging from chicken salad to chocolate cake. The staff in very knowledgeable about their products and quick to help you find what you are looking for. Their produce is always fresh and they have multiple pre-made options to help speed up your prep time. I have found several items at Mariano's that are not available at Target or Jewel (Tiesta Tea being one of them!) Their salad, soup, and hot bars make weeknight dinners super easy. I have even made their $6 dinner my regular Wednesday plan. To top off the feeling of ease, they often have a pianist playing in the front of the store that can be heard through out. This touch really helps change my attitude as I am walking the aisles trying to put together a plan for the week. I love this Mariano's and it has quickly become my go-to grocery store. read more

This location has gone waaaaay downhill. They advertise sales and frequently are out of sale item. The floor in the produce area is dirty. I also question the food handling and cross contamination I witnessed at the grill area. You shouldn't use the same tongs to touch raw chicken and then immediate use those same tongs to pull a cooked burger off the grill. I think when Kroger's bought Mariano's is when they went downhill. I will no longer shop here even though it is closest to our home. In the past few years It has gone downhill in terms of overall cleanliness and customer service. I am disabled, and a trip to the store takes me a bit of effort. The check-out especially has become a nightmare. The lines are long and usually just one or two check-stands are open. The rest is self-checkout, which I don't use. The clerks are no longer putting the groceries in the cart, the past several times they just bagged them and left them on the counter for me to put in the cart myself. The last time I was there the checker was leaving my multiple bags on the counter, as usual. I noticed three employees several feet away at the self-checkout area, just chatting with each other, doing nothing. I asked my checker if she could please ask one of those women to put my groceries in my cart for me. (I suffered a broken back and am in constant pain.) She was young and obviously uncomfortable asking these chattering magpies to do anything. So I called over to them, "Can one of you please help me with my groceries?" They split up fast. Two of them walked rapidly in different directions without acknowledging me. The third came over and I asked her, "Don't you guys put the groceries in the cart for the customers anymore?" She muttered something unintelligible and to her credit she did help me, reluctantly. But I have had enough encounters like this, plus the store is always dirty looking. No more Marianos for me, although I will still visit the Naperville store if I'm out that way. It has always been an extraordinary store, but it is much further away. I struggle between 3 and 4 stars for Mariano;s, but settled on 3 since 4s and 5s are reserved for the extra special. I'd certainly say there are some special things to check out at Mariano's, but theres probably more about this store that's just A-OK. The cheese selection and fresh fruit are certainly a couple of the special points. If it were close, it would certainly be worth the visit for these items alone. If you're looking for a specialty cheese, you may find it here. I did, however, notice the absence of kasseri or kefalotyri for saganaki. The prices are certainly on the higher end, which transfers right along to the most common of items like tomato sauce or cereal. The hot soup bar smelled amazing, and the sampling of donut was delicious as well. Certainly worth the stop in, as fresh fruit and a great cheese selection can be hard to come by in the area. read more

Shopper beware. I rarely write reviews but I just can't believe this place is still open. For years I have been shopping at this Mariano's store because it is the closest to my house but no more! Everything about this store has gone down hill since they opened. Make sure you have plenty of time to "stop in" to grab something as you will be waiting in the only ONE lane open in the store behind a dozen other people to make your purchase while several employees stand around and watch. Produce, canned goods and dairy items are often expired. Their so called "App" has NEVER worked in store for their digital coupons. And when you ask an employee why, they simply state "it has never worked, you have to download our coupons on your computer in order to use them". Super convenient to have to go home first after work or while out running errands in order to use the coupons they advertise all over their store. Their are numerous other grocery stores in the area. I highly recommend skipping this one and heading to another. Such a shame. read more

I went during the senior hours on Tuesday morning to pick up few items (around 7:30 AM and I was out by 8 AM) and was surprised to see so many non-seniors in the stores. Shouldn't the time be reserved for seniors only? Love this place! On top of Great Products, they have AMAZING Customer Service! My husband and I went grocery shopping here and I bought some cheese. When I went to open it, there was mold on the cheese. It was no where near the expiration date. I was surprised to find it was bad. I didn't think much of it, because everything else we bought was super fresh. I took the cheese back to see if I could just exchange it for a new one. In addition to the manager being more than apologetic, they refunded my purchase and sent me home with a fresh cheese at no cost! They know I will be back!!!!!! They know how to resolve an issue!!!! I just moved from Chicago- some of the best stores/restaurants in the city are from this chain. Mariano's needs to do themselves a favor and just NOT at this place. I wanted to give them 4 stars, but just couldn't do it. Here is my break down. 1. The hot bar/deli/bakery = fantastic. I have to say they have wonderful food and the cafe is not bad either. I love their store made guacamole, love their store made cookies, even the sushi is delicious. My favorite (although expensive) feature is the hot bar. They always diversify the foods, and sometimes they will have just simply delicious choices. The artisan mac and cheese is a killer! Literally! My cholesterol! It is so darn good though, it is hard to help! I always tell myself I'm measuring out small portions, but the hot bar food container always weighs in at around $10 for me. I spend more money here than I would like. Like I said, expensive! 2. Salad bar, beware of the chicken. On more than one occasion, I've added the chicken strips to my salad and later found that they were frozen. Not only do they freeze days old chicken, but it was hard enough to break a tooth. I try to avoid the salad bar these days, except for the fruit! Always fresh strawberries, mangoes, and pineapples. Delicious! 3. The counter / deli foods. Now I've never tried a sandwich here, but from the comments left in the reviews, I need to! deli counter bar is severely over-priced. $3 for Italian chicken breasts that are smaller than half of my palm. Unbelievable. Long waits. There are always 5 people behind the deli counter, 4 of them stand around and do nothing, while 1 of them is servicing a line of 30 people. 4. This place is over-priced. Things here are oddly priced. Sometimes I'm shocked by how cheap certain items are, and other times, I'm shocked that you're paying on average $1-$2 more for items that are "on sale" than items you could get at Meijers or Walmart at regular price. They rip you off when it comes to normal brand name food products. 5. The check out clerks, unlike the deli staff, are the epitome of respectful. I respect the fact that they seem to value your time. The clerks very rarely make a mistake. From an operational stand point, the place is very efficiently run. The clerks respect your time and take their jobs seriously. Whenever there is a line of even TWO people, and a clerk walking by sees it -- he or she will run to an empty counter and flip around the sign that says closed, so you don't have to wait. They do this no matter what time of the day it is. Unlike stores like Walmart where the clerks huddle in groups to talk about their weekend while you're waiting in a line of 12 people. This is such a huge plus for me. It goes a long way. 6. They may be the only big grocery store I've been to that still have credit card readers that don't accept the card chips? This is obviously no biggie. But find it strange. Also, I don't know what the point of the rewards coupons are? They NEVER work at this location. read more

This Mariano's is just short of disgusting. It's filthy. I've tried so hard to like it, and have gone in about 1/2 dozen times since it's opened, and after this morning's visit, I'm really not going back. We stopped in around noon, and the hot buffet was already a mess. Food slopped all over the place, spoons and tongs sticky. Most items were 1/2 empty trays, and what was left was all dried up and looked like it had been there since last Sunday. I did try the mashed potatoes, which were mediocre, and the chicken strips, which were seasoned nicely and probably would have not have been so tough if I had bought them last Wednesday. Everything thing else I grabbed within the store was ok, but WAY over priced. I will stick with Meijer, and when I want specialty items, I'll drive down to Caputos. Bye bye! read more

I have mixed feelings about this place. Their meat selection and quality is good. But their produce department needs to be better in quality and proper signage. Signages for prices are often wrong or not displayed. I've been in several times and there'd always be something that rings up significantly higher than what's shown. I'd Mention it to the cashiers but they give you attitude because they don't want to double check the prices. So, make sure to check your receipts if you plan on shopping here! So far so good! I missed Dominick's, mainly because of the location, so I was excited to learn that a Mariano's would be opening up--having heard good things. Unfortunately, I was on a schedule, so I didn't have as much time to spend exploring the store as I would have liked, but the time I spent in there made me eager to come back for more. For those of you who went to Dominick's regularly, you'll notice some changes right away--obviously the store is shiny and clean--but the layout is similar and it already feels like home. Price wise, it seemed to be generally on par with Dominick's (neither expensive nor cheap), but the produce and meats looked better, and I think they may be carrying more high-end and artisanal products. For now I have to give four stars because it's new and who knows how things will turn out over the next few months. So far, I'm liking what I'm seeing, and excited to see how things go. read more

I am definitely a big fan of this grocery store. They have a lot of really unique stuff (read - house made juices and chocolate covered popcorn with mini m&ms and sprinkles that I buy pretty much every week despite owning a popcorn maker). The produce is fresh and there's a big selection. The staff is friendly and helpful, and there are often free samples!! I would definitely say that this place is pricier than shopping at say, Meijer, but there's pretty good quality to be had. I usually go on Mondays after work (usually when the doughnuts come out of the oven) and I have to say that I really enjoy perusing the store... it's pretty relaxing before I head home. read more

Visiting this location is a mixed bag. To start with the positive- The meat department is awesome. They are friendly, quick, and effective time in and time out. I see three different employees regularly around the noon hour (2 male and 1 female) and they are all fantastic. In an era where speed seems to have overtaken quality of customer service, they manage to find an impressive balance between the two. Mariano's goal is to strive to have, "unequaled service and hospitality." that rises above the competition, and I believe the entire meat department is a shining example of that goal accomplished. The checkout process is not a good example however. I frequently come for lunch, and this is the only Mariano's I know of that does not have registers dedicated to the hot foods area (there is one semi-close but it is never open!). I have to buy my items, walk over to the regular checkout area (which is quite far) wait in lines far too long, and then walk back to have my items grilled. Besides the inconvenient loss of time on lunch break, that is not consistent with other locations, the grilling area customer service is substandard. Twice in 7 days I had horrible experiences. The first was waiting to be given my finished food as an employee preferred to wash dishes and look at me instead of handing it to me (until I complained at the service desk). Then a week later the same employee cooked my food incorrectly and had to do it. To make matters worse, I filled out the online survey the first time, visited the customer service desk the second time, and specifically requested a manger call back. It never happened. While Mariano's claims they want, "unequaled service and hospitality" The managerial staff's actions claim otherwise. read more

This Mariano's on New York St. in Aurora one of the biggest scamming stores. The items you buy on sale never same at the register and their receipt doesn't show on which item you get discount. After you shop there, sum up your items and you will see your total amount is not going to match with the amount you pay. ( I am not talking about the difference you pay as a tax). It depends how much item you buy on sale. More you buy, you got ripped off more. I know sometimes it is not a big difference like $1 more, and I say it is not worth it to complain.
