Stale chips and can cheese!

High ratings inspired us to try this place...ordered a Sol beer...skunky beer with a March 2023 date...got a Miller Lite to replace it...it was cold. The chips and quest came out...stale chips and can cheese. Nasty tasting stuff. Cancelled our food order...if you serve stale beer and chips with can cheese...how good could the food be? Not today people...we are off to find authentic Mexican food!

Pupusa revuelta

Service: We came to have a to go order. It took around 5 minutes for the only server/bartender to take our order. My friend had a drink while we waited. By the time we go our order, which was a pupusa and tamal, it had been over 45 minutes. Food: I had the pupusa revuelta and one tamal de gallina. They were standard Latin food, decently sized. My friend had a margarita, which he enjoyed. Ambiance: There weren't many diners after 9PM on a Tuesday, so it was rather casual. The music added to the Latin vibe. Value: I don't think I would return, but you might get lucky with faster service when you go.

Papusa

I am remarkably impressed with this restaurant. Seemingly hidden in an unassuming shopping plaza is a lovely Mexican/Salvadoran restaurant that's a great value and great taste. Service: the service was just alright to be honest. It took quite a long time to get our server's attention mid-meal and when we were trying to get the check. The restaurant wasn't busy with maybe only 2 other tables. Atmosphere: it gives family restaurant vibes. When I was dining here, a quinceañera was happening in the event hall next door and the music could be heard quite clearly, but that was okay. Food: the far and away highlight were the Papusas! They were delicious, filling, and so much variety in terms of filling! I would come back and be totally content with just ordering 3 or 4 papusas for my meal. My actual entree though was a bit disappointing. The salmon was just fish. Nothing special or exciting about it at all. The sides though. The rice and the beans were definitely a stand out on the plate. I just wished I ordered something else that would have paired well with them. Value: the papusas were not only delicious, they were cheap! Definitely an auto-include anytime I'm back there. The margaritas were also at a pretty good price (and they certainly pour on the stronger side)! I'd definitely come back, I'd just be sure to avoid the fish.

This place is BOMB .COM! The food is delicious, served hot and cooked when you place your order. The wait time is a bit long but it's well worth it!

Mango margarita

Hidden Gem! Authentic Mexican food ! We will definitely be back for more. Nice ambience of Mexican theme. I feel like I'm back in Mexico!

Lomo Saltado with rice and beans

Had to add this restaurant. Nice Latin/Salvadorean place. Friendly atmosphere and staff. Ordered the lomo saltado. ¡Muy delicioso! Bed was well seasoned and tender, veggies were crisp, rice was moist and fluffy and the black beans were flavorful. They have multiple lunch specials and are reasonably priced. Definitely will be back!

Veggie fajitas and added shrimp. Could've had more flavor but overall C+ fajitas.

Amazing food on a consistent basis. Their tacos, pupusa's, and taquitos is what my family orders the most and they're always very good.

I will say this was a rare occurrence - eating in the restaurant (I was forced to go with the fam- let me hear it for my latinx peeps!) - but tbh, 1/1/21 started off cool & rainy & the meal made it *worth* it. There are not MANY people I know that truly enjoy tripe but I LOVE it & always have (cmon peopleee. let's get cultured ). If you want an authentic & healthy Latin American meal, this will do the trick. The soup packs a punch of full but soft flavors. I could have done with a LOT more tripe, though the beef bone was a PLUUUS. There are also a TONNNNN of veggies: cooked zucchini, corn, & big chucks of carrots & cabbage. Dish comes with rice on the side, as shown, & three corn tortillas. The zucchini & the carrots I could do without but I won't knock it for being healthy! Huge serving too, where I thought I wasnt gonna finish, but... I did. It comes with a lime on the side, which I don't usually to my ~sopas~ unless it's fish based, but it did the trick this time around.

That honestly should have been my sign to leave. I still ordered a baleada, and it was extremely disappointing. It was so greasy it felt like oil had been poured all over it. The restaurant looks like a cozy hole-in-the-wall restaurant, so it was a very casual atmosphere. I ordered a Guatemalan-Style Chicken Tamal and a Chicken Pupusa with a Fruit Juice Drink (Ensalada de Fruta). The Fruit Juice Drink was full of cubed apples and was on the sweeter side, but it was refreshing for sure. Now onto the food... Guatemalan Chicken Tamal - This has to be one of the best tamals I have ever had! I am used to the Mexican tamales that are on the dryer side, but their tamal masa was gelatinous almost like a custard, and there were big pieces of chicken meat inside. And the plus side is that the chicken was 99% meat and 1% fat! They did not skimp on the meat in this one. Chicken Pupusa - I am used to greasy pupusas, but their pupusa was significantly less greasy, and that is a HUGE plus. Also, these pupusas were less than $5.00 each and came with a huge side of cabbage. The cheese-to-meat ratio inside was also pretty decent; I would say 60% cheese, 40% meat. My husband absolutely loved all the pupusas he ordered and even bought some to take home to our family. We were served by one of the owners who was very sweet and spoke to my husband in Spanish and me in English; this means a lot to me because in other places, I tend to be ignored while they speak Spanish to just my husband. When we are back in Virginia, this will be one of our go-to spots for Salvadorean food. We are used to pupusas being over $5, but these pupusas were less greasy AND much more affordable.

The meat options were also greatly appreciated by my friends who joined me at the restaurant. Ask for the in-house spicy salsa if you like a kick of spice. There are some parking spots right in front, although not many. There is a decent amount of seating, but it would be tight if you had a large party. My partner did note that the bathrooms weren't that great. You immediately get served complementary chips and salsa. They were pretty basic, but not bad. We ordered the following: + Papusas (Pork and Cheese & Loroco and Cheese) - Decent, although I prefer the Loroco (an edible flower bud). + Pollo à la Primavera (chicken dish) - Yummy, especially the sauce which mixes well with their hot/spicy sauce too! I could do without the salad dressing. + Camarones con Calabeza (shrimp dish) - Same as above! Note they leave the tails on. + Natural Juices (Mango and Maranon) - So refreshing! I loved the Maranon (cashew apple) was a wonderful burst of tropical sweetness with a subtle nutty taste. I appreciate that for the pupusas they had the foresight to provide my partner and I two plates so we could sphere the papusas. The portion sizes of the entrees were great for the price. It did take a while for the staff to swing by so that we could get boxes and the check. Note that credit cards and mobile pay are accepted. I definitely wouldn't mind coming back again to try more items on their menu.
