I had been multiple within the first couple of months Marfreless had reopened, and absolutely LOVED everything about this place, hence my first five star review.
I'm not sure how this place fell from grace so quickly.
A couple of months ago I dropped by with my boyfriend on a Sunday night. Having a long day at work makes you want to have a drink and relax! We had such a lovely time here during our last few visits, why not go again? Upon arriving, we chose to sit at the bar, not in the mood for the naughty vibe upstairs. We were greeted by the bartender, who was sweet and made a couple of drinks for us. About twenty minutes later the place cleared out (it's probably around 11:30 now), then the manager (I'm assuming, because he walked in through the front door with a woman who clearly didn't work there, and walked behind the counter to look at some things) came in. He was polite and asked us how we were doing. Then the bartender left and went home. This was surprising, seeing as we hadn't paid our tab yet and I was worried about my tip getting to her properly. But oh well, let me finish up my delicious drink. The manager proceeds to sit at the bar with his 'date' only a couple of chairs away from us, while we chatted amongst ourselves. The clock strikes 12 and the manager comes back around behind the bar and asks us if we could close out our tab because he needed to do check out. Which is code for "Gtfo, we're trying to go home". I politely responded, "Oh, I didn't realize this place closed early on Sundays." And he proceeded to give me a lame excuse, something about having to close early when it's slow. I don't remember, it was so dumb I tuned him out after the first few words because I knew what he really wanted to say. Anyway, he then realized he didn't have a tab for me because the bartender hadn't written it down (Usually after you order they hold your credit car behind the bar and put it on top of a piece of paper that they've written your drinks on throughout the night). So.. he pretty much gave us a free bill. Which was nice but he was only doing it because he was too lazy to input 4 drinks into the computer and wanted to high tail it out of there to play with his date. I threw down some cash and we left. It must be nice to close down your bar and kick guests out because YOU don't feel like being there.
But we got over it and came back again about a month ago. It was a Wednesday night and there was a blonde girl behind the bar. We ordered some drinks and opted for one of the small booths on the first floor. An hour later a rowdy group came in, seemingly drunk already and took up three tables right next to us, even though there were plenty of other tables open farther away. I got a couple of stares from some of the men in the group as they whispered to each other like high school boys. When my boyfriend went to the restroom, one guy, who was obviously more intoxicated than the rest, tried to make advances on me by leaning over and trying to rest his head on my shoulder, which I was NOT having. He wasn't too pleased with my choice to not reciprocate, and continued to harass me and my boyfriend the rest of the night, even after we told him to not touch my jacket, or not to touch my boyfriend's phone on the table. Eventually I stood up in front of him and asked if he had a problem? But the coward just stumbled away, pointing and mumbling at me to 'Shut the f*** up.' Couldn't even say it to my face when I gave him the chance. All the while the bouncer was hanging out at the bar with some people. We promptly decided to leave, so my boyfriend went up to the bar to pay. He came back to tell me the bill was 42$. FOR THREE DRINKS! She offered him no itemized receipt, just flipped her iPad around to show him the total. He's too sweet to question things like that, so he paid and tipped way more than she deserved. I wasn't sure if she had put auto gratuity on the bill or if they were overcharging, because I KNOW those drinks did not cost that much the last four times we had been. We had to look up the receipt via email in the car, and that's when we realized Barbie behind the bar charged us 14$ a drink. Que the mental table flipping. Are you kidding me? FOURTEEN DOLLARS. That is beyond ridiculous. This isn't Vegas, at 17$ a drink. I had two Old Fashioneds and he had one drink from their cocktail menu. That pretty much sealed the deal for me.
Not only is the bartender responsible for how drunk their patrons get, bouncers are there to keep the drunk people in line. Neither of them did their job. I had liked coming here because I avoid the college crowd full of rude and disrespectful people, it's a huge buzz kill and the clientele here was always a bit more upscale, generally older and classy. But I guess I shouldn't be surprised, there will always be pigs amongst the men. I am thoroughly disappointed in this establishment. And you can guarantee we will not be back any time soon.
