Marfa Table - Cozy Dining Room

We had good coffee,…read morecinammon roll, and the *last* breakfast taco (they had been open less than an hour and ran out of tacos...?) Everything seems to be made from scratch, excellent.. Just limited options. I think when we walked by around 1 or 2 they had exhausted all of their supplies for the day and closed shop (normal hours until 3 pm, I believe).

Our best dining experience in Marfa during our extended weekend in this small town…read more The interior is small and cozy, and decorated in a simple yet chic style. The kitchen where the chef prepares the wonderful meals is not in a separate room, but completely open to the dining area. So as the diners relax over their wine (BYOB) and wait for their meals, they get to see the chef nearby, dicing, grilling, baking, and working her magic in the kitchen. My friends I felt more like guests in a home than diners in a restaurant. The chef/owner came to our table after we were seated, greeted us, and chatted with us for a bit. The two servers were adorable and polite little girls, roughly around 9 and 12 (give or take a year or two), who helped the chef around the kitchen and served dishes as needed. I later learned they were the daughters of previous diners; these little fairies apparently wanted to come back and help the chef around the kitchen. How cute is that?! (You'll likely get regular grownup servers on a typical night). As for the food, everything tasted so incredibly fresh and flavorful. For appetizers, my friends and I shared the salmon spread and the bruschetta, both of which were delicious. My entree was the fish tacos with a side of sweet potatoes and a vegetable dish; the highlight of this dish was the yams. The yams were topped with -- if my memory serves me correctly -- goat cheese, which brought out the wonderful taste of the sweet potatoes even more. On a sidenote, the wait for the food is on the long side. There is only one chef, after all. If your night is flexible, this shouldn't matter, since chatting with friends over wine and appetizers in this wonderful setting is certainly nothing to complain about. But if you have other activities scheduled that night, you might want to get there much earlier so you can relax and leisurely enjoy your dining experience.

It's always a good sign when the parking lot is full in the middle of the week. Got a seat inside and waited. Then waited some more. The hostess seated a 14-top and we decided that we would leave if their orders went in first. BUT finally - a waitress. Friendly, though obviously harried by the unexpected mid-week bonanza. Drinks & food order in!! Margarita for me, Dos Equis for him, chili con queso, spicy chicken sandwich as shared plates. $22 marg was ABSOLUTELY worth it. Queso was SO good, with hefty chips made just right. Spice in the chicken - yes please. Did we wait, yes. Did we mind, NO. BEST PART - the people watching was PRIME. We could've passed another round & been entertained until closing but folks were waiting for tables and i was just buzzed enough on the ONE marg. Looking forward to tomorrow when we try a burger & cheesecake.

As one…read moreof only a handful of larger restaurants in Marfa, we expected a much more welcoming experience, especially considering the prices geared toward tourists. Unfortunately, this establishment did not feel family friendly or kid friendly despite presenting itself that way. After waiting around 10 minutes just for someone in our party to grab menus, we were eventually served water and later had our orders taken. However, the overall attitude and repeated glares from the waitress/bartender, Gary Jean, made the experience uncomfortable and unwelcoming. Good service goes a long way, and basic kindness shouldn't feel like too much to ask. It became clear that receiving decent service was going to be more effort than it should have been, so we decided to leave before our food even arrived. To management: supporting your staff better may help improve the customer experience overall. A little hospitality can make a big difference.

We ran into some people who we'd chatted with at baggage claim in El Paso who were also there. The next day we popped into a shop and the shop keeper said, "Where you all having dinner at Cochineal last night. You were sat by the door weren't you?" That's the charm of Marfa.

It's for a very Texas upscale vibe tho, I liked the ambiance quite a bit! They had a lot of tables outside with heat lamps because it does get cool in the evenings, and they had regular tables and bar seating inside. We didn't have a reservation bc I wasn't sure what time we'd be arriving, but luckily they were able to seat us immediately at the bar since all the other tables were taken (wait for a table was almost an hour and a half). Our waitress (her name was Dallas) was super sweet and attentive and clearly knew the menu well. It's not a very long menu and the portion sizes were a little small for the price, hence 4/5 stars. But the flavors were excellent! My dad and I both got the risotto which had a little more to the portion, and my mom got the trout which was admittedly very small for like $35ish. But as I said, excellent flavor there! She also got a cocktail for like $16ish that they made off menu because she likes sweeter drinks and all the main menu drinks were pretty dry. I spent like $170 in total for all our food plus tax and tip I think? Objectively not terrible, but again for the price - it was a little high. Will also mention they had a single stall restroom, it was immaculate! And there was a good bit of street parking just around the corner from the place in front of a church, so even though there's no lot you can find a place to park.

Getting there, though, felt like stepping backward in time--partly paved roads, weathered buildings, and aging homes that quietly carry the town's long history. Then, almost abruptly, Sentinel Marfa appears as a striking contrast. The building is crisp and modernist, the kind of clean, intentional design you'd expect in a big-city neighborhood, not tucked into a rugged, historic West Texas landscape. Inside, that contrast continues. The high ceilings and open, airy layout give the space a contemporary calm, while scattered tables display local art, newspapers, and small curios that root it firmly in Marfa's creative spirit. A hallway beside the ordering counter leads to a quieter back room, which in turn opens to an outdoor area shaded by a massive oak tree. The place was buzzing, full enough that we ended up sharing a table with another family, which somehow felt fitting in a town like this. Coffee is ordered at the counter, with both staff and baristas displaying some of that West Texas charm and with a smile. Drinks are picked up at the counter while food finds its way to you. The coffee drinks are crafted with beans from Picacho Coffee Roasters. Straight coffee and lattes were exceptional, and the breakfast tacos, made fresh with fluffy eggs, cheese, and potatoes, delivered exactly what we needed. By the time we left, we felt not just caffeinated, but welcomed and ready to explore a place where time seems to move at its own deliberate pace.

The space itself is super cute with a warm, inviting atmosphere, and the staff couldn't have been friendlier. You can tell right away it's a place people genuinely enjoy working at. They open at 5 and don't take reservations, so be prepared--the line was already stacked when doors opened. We were able to snag seats at the bar, which ended up being perfect. We started with the deviled eggs, which are soaked in beet juice and have this subtle curry kick--such a unique twist and definitely worth ordering. Next was the roasted cauliflower, and wow... perfectly charred with a hot honey drizzle that brought everything together. Easily one of those dishes you keep thinking about after. For the entrée, I had the salmon with a curry slaw, and it was exceptional. Everything felt thoughtfully put together and full of flavor without being overcomplicated. Overall, such a great experience. If you're in Marfa, this place is 100% worth checking out. Would go back in a heartbeat.
