I live in Haddonfield and we eat at Mare Monte regularly, most recently 6/15/23. The specialty is Italian seafood dishes. I always start with escargot and really like the seafood risotto. The daily seafood special is usually a great choice. My wife is a vegetarian and loves this place. So if you like great food and attentive service with reasonable prices this place is for you. If I could I would leave no stars. My boyfriend and I found this restaurant searching for where to go eat. We were looking for a nice fine dining experience for a date night. We made a reservation for 5:45. The only good thing I can say about the restaurant is the hosts at the front greet you with a smile. Everything else was terrible. The table we were sat at was in the corner near the front door. With people walking in and out the front door, with the time we sat at the table we were accompanied by a chill from the constant opening and closing of the door. The food was tasteless, overcooked, overpriced and not freshly made. The food came out in about 10 minutes after ordering it. The kitchen throws some hot demi glaze all over the plate to present it as "fine dining" and to try to mask the tasteless, overcooked food that it is. I had ordered the veal and my boyfriend ordered a chicken dish. Cutting the veal with a butter knife, the entire table was shaking, it was over cooked and felt like rubber. We were never asked how anything was during the time we were eating. The server came back only once to our table once it was empty to ask about dessert. To top it off I have several allergies and when communicating this to the server, he assured me I was fine. I had asked are you sure there isn't gluten soy or nuts but he again assured me there would be none in my dish. I didn't feel reassured and management didn't even come over to discuss. The waiter was wrong. I went home that night with pains in my side and then broke out with some hives. A fine dining experience is not what you will get going to dinner at this establishment. Oh how I wanted to love this place. The good - meat sauce on the pappardelle pasta was really good. It had a nice flavor, and mixing the ricotta cheese into it gave it a lovely texture. Portions were generous. Two of us shared one pasta dish and saved a full second entree. The not so good - the pasta was dense, so cooked al debate, it was tough to eat. The Diablo sauce didn't have enough spice - there was nothing wrong with the sauce, but it wasn't close to spicy. The cheese board looked like blocks of cheese were just broken by hand and thrown in a pan. We ended up putting it away until the next day's lunch so I can actually slice the cheese. It would have been nice if a small salad was included with entrees. Most local places do, and it breaks up the heavy pasta dishes. Overall, not bad, but competing with so many other good Italian spots, it's not going to be a return visit for us. read more

This place is a Little Italy of delight. In the time of Covid it's still wonderful to know that you can find quality food restaurants that will deliver. I had a friend who stopped by to visit me and we wanted to get a good meal that was comparable to a dining out experience. This place popped up on my Grubhub app. What a nice surprise! There's a vast menu to satiate anyone's pallet. Appetizers to desserts, the food was a hearty portion and absolutely mouthwatering. This is definitely a date place if you're single. Wow! Hidden Gem! Sunday 6pm, not many people in the establishment, this had me worried, thinking it wouldn't be too good but on the contrary, we were blown away!. And a BYOB to boot, great find. Nice atmosphere and a very friendly wait staff made this a great experience. Arugula salad, delicious,cold & fresh with a buratta, prosciutto & roasted red peppers. Good size & satisfying. Then I had the squid ink pasta seafood fradiavolo, Awesome! Homemade pasta with tender shrimp, delicate calamari rings & flavorful mussels in a perfectly spiced tomato sauce. Good stuff right there! Went for dinner on a Monday night. Made a reservation, but didn't need one, as it wasn't busy. Street parking was easy. This restaurant is right near the train station, so u can park there for free if no street parks. BYOB. Bread and butter is given for free. Ordered the octopus salad...very good. For entrees, had the shrimp scampi over thin pasta, and braised short rib with spinach papardelle noodles. Re: the shirt rib dish. Loved the noodles and sauce, but too much meat. Instead of short rib on the bone, it was kind of shredded. It was tasty and tender, but just too much meat for my taste. read more

Tried this restaurant for take out on a frigid pre-holiday evening when we didn't dare to brave the outdoors. We chose it simply because the delivery wait time was not as long as some local favorite spots, and are so glad to have discovered this gem! Our order arrived quickly and was piping hot, fresh and delicious. Everything we ordered was excellent, from the crisp Caesar salad with crunchy homemade croutons and a perfectly seasoned creamy dressing, to our incredible entrees of the risotto Mare Monte and the mafalde with crabmeat and scallops. For me, the standout surprise was an artichoke appetizer -- impeccably grilled Roman artichoke hearts over a pile of sautéed spinach glistening with a cheesy, lemony sauce and scattered with salty capers. Made reservation thru open table for Saturday (yesterday) @ 6:45pm for 4 people. -I called before my reservation to ask a question and the hostess was very nice, she answered my question and told me if I needed anything before my reservation to call her back. -when we arrived she remembered speaking to me on the phone. She asked if we wanted to sit inside or outside, my husband chose outside (excellent weather). - A young girl came and really quick gave us water. We told her we were waiting on 2 more people. -My brother and wife arrived, after about 10 minutes, the waiter came and gave us the specials and left us to look at the menu. -The waiter was very nice but he took so long to come back and take our orders. -Our orders came out timely. -The food: Bread came nice and hot. Appetizers *Bruschetta- it was good. I think I can make better at home. *kale salad-Husband wasn't wow. *Cesar salad- sister in law didn't talk about it, lol Entrees: *Chicken parmigiana-brother ordered this plate and I tried it and can't even remembered what it tasted like. It was blah! *Gnocchi allá Vodka- my sister in law- I also tried it and it was actually pretty good (honestly the best pasta plate we had that night). *Penne allá Romana- I ordered this. And it was supposed to be spicy and it was not. Half of the pasta was hard, it tasted a lot like sweet peppers. Where do I begin? The 2 stars go to the hostess and the bus boys. My husband, sister-in-law, brother-in-law and myself came to celebrate their birthdays. We arrived at 7:10. At 7:25 no waiter had approached our table. I went up to the hostess to ask for a wine opener so we could at least open our wine. At 7:35 a gentleman approached, didn't introduce himself and said "did you get a wine opener from the hostess?", to which we replied "yes, we don't have a waiter yet". He replied "yes that's me", and then just stood there. He was waiting for his wine opener!! Didn't introduce himself, didn't apologize that we were waiting 30 minutes for a server- just let us open our wine and took his wine key back, then walked away! We waited until 7:45 and then flagged down the hostess to order appetizers. 10 minutes after that the waiter came back and took our order. Still never introduced himself or apologized for the wait. Out of our table, 3 of us are former servers. We know what it's like to be in the weeds. We tried to give him the benefit of the doubt but he didn't even acknowledge us. At 8:45 the food arrived. Bland at best. My brother -in-law ordered the Penne Medici, it arrived with not one piece of crab meat. I had the Veal Mare Monte it was flavorless. My husband and his sister had the Pappardelle Cavatore which was very good. The calamari, muscles, and grilled cheese were also good. The restaurant is extremely loud. The waiter never came back to ask us how our dinner was. We were very disappointed as we both paid for babysitters and were very unhappy with the service. My brother-in-law did talk to the manager/owner (?) who comped our meal. We weren't looking to get the meal comped, just to let him know about our experience. We won't be back. They also started to clear our silverware and plates while we were still in the middle of eating, forks in hand. Where do I begin?? I highly recommend this authentic Italian restaurant! The service is friendly and the food is beyond amazing, it tastes fresh and food comes out steaming hot. The meatballs were the best I've had and the marinara sauce was delicious. The arugula salad was tasty, it was light and a perfect start to the meal. My favorite part of the dinner was the four cheese gnocchi, it's the best gnocchi I have ever had. They taste homemade with ricotta filling, the four cheese sauce with toasted walnuts is decadent and leaves you wanting more! And the bread is soft and fresh, goes perfect with the extra virgin olive oil on the table. The food would rank as fine dining. The service was anything but. My entree of mushroom ravioli was excellent - pasta was properly cooked, sauce and filling was first rate. The waiter we had seemed at best bored with the job and at worst annoyed at our presence. There's no excuse for having to request flutes when you bring a $60 bottle of champagne and after the first pour you have to pour your own wine since the waiter was nowhere to be seen. The service was slow.. we sat at our table for at least 20 minutes before being brought water and glasses for our wine. The bread they gave us could break your teeth. The smoke alarm kept going off. We were initially told it was no cause for concern but 15 minutes in no one would tell us what was actually happening. Our meal was below average. My dad got the risotto mare monte and it only had two shrimp in it. My husband's chicken parm was dry and overcooked. We left disappointed and very underwhelmed. Me and two girlfriends tried Mare Monte last night after searching restaurants in South Jersey and trying to find one we had never been to. I'm not sure how I've never heard of this place but I am so glad I found it because we had one hell of a meal! To start, we split three appetizers including the octopus, escargot, and scallops special. It was our first time trying escargot and we were pleasantly surprised. It had a melt in your mouth garlicky butter taste. The octopus was cooked perfectly and came on a tasty bed of arugula salad. The scallops special was incredible as well. We then split a Caesar salad which reminded me of one of the best Caesars I have had at a local steakhouse so needless to say I was a huge fan. For entrees we got the spaghetti Silva, squid ink linguini, and the fettuccine special. The homemade pasta really makes all the difference. Each dish was full of flavor and my favorite was my choice, the fettuccine special that came with scallops, sausage, shrimp, and asparagus in a pesto sun dried tomato sauce. That alone was worth going back for. To finish off this insanely good meal, we split the chocolate crème brûlée and tiramisu. Both were very good. This is such a cute little place, and I liked that they were open until ten. Many of the places in haddonfield close rather early, and I eat dinner later so it was a surprise to see. We started with calamari and it was great. We squeezed a little lemon on it and it hit the spot. For dinner I got the rigatoni all' matriciana. It was a spicy pasta with pancetta. It came out piping hot and i was pleased with my meal. My partner got the gnocchi alla vodka. The pasta was delicious and had prosciutto and spinach.
