I wasn't sure what to expect when I got here... Our local guide (My friend's cousin) was raving about this place. She said Marco's had the best tacos on Salem. I wouldn't know, never been to Salem before... so I took her word for it. Good news! She was not wrong at all...well Marco's is the only spot I had tacos in Salem...lol. Marco's sells legit some tacos. The tacos here do remind me of the street tacos in Mexico. While not as good as the Tacos in Mexico, these are certainly tasty. I got 4 Tacos, each with different meat, none of them were disappointing. My only regret was forgetting to take a pic of the Tacos...such a bad Yelper! I was a wee bit houngary... If I'm in the area again, I'll gladly return and get more Tacos or try some other things on the menu...

Bean burrito and tacos--note the double tortilla taco to resist breakage.

The venue is authentic street tacos and food, so it's based on price and what I expect from a mom n pop taco shop from California--maybe not perfectly Mexican. It was all that, especially for the price. Maybe this is what is the norm in Salem, I can't say. But it was more than I expected. My wife got bean tacos and a burrito to bring home. There was something about it she didn't like. She suspected the beans were cooked in lard which makes sense, but she asked for "vegetarian" and thought there was a shared language. Many folks think vegetarian is just no meat, but when you cook mean and no meat food with the same equip, like Burger King's veggie burger, it does indeed become meat. Beans cooked in lard even more so corrupts the food. Regardless, I thought they were great! Full of beans, cheese, and ensalada stuffing. Unlike pizza or chowder, not so great the next morning. But fresh, they made me think I was back to my roots in SOCAL! Both red and green sauces were what I envisioned. It was take-out and I didn't use the bathrooms, so I have no input on cleanliness or service. I'll go back sometime and report on the inside experience since other reviews have pointed out serious faults in that regard (Sheesh, how hard can it be?). But for now, I'm a liker!

Frozen poop shrimp & Random fish inside taco.

Disappointing. Told the owner that there are shrimp feces veins still inside the shrimp. He replied " so? no other restaurants remove them, that's just how they come" He then went back into the kitchen and brought back a shrimp that was so frost bitten that Mr. freeze from Batman would have been impressed. He showed it to me and said " see, there's nothing you can do about it." How about use fresh ingredients and devein the shrimp? I then found a random piece of fish in my other shrimp taco? Baffled. They also don't offer a taco Tuesday deal. Paid $20 for 6 tacos that had frozen poop and random fish pieces inside.

Really great food, but we've been sitting here for 45 minutes for our to go order and still nothing . No rhyme or reason to what order the food is brought out in. No apologies for the wait, nothing. About to walk out without our food. This may be our last time here. :( Edited, 2 years later... ok. Despite the sometimes painfully slow service, we do keep coming back. They have the best fish tacos in town! Just don't be in any hurry.

Marco's is my favorite taco place, ever. I was really sad when Marco's previous business, la perla, closed down and was excited when this place opened up. You can't get a better deal than a dollar per taco. The fish taco is my favorite. It's always freshly fried it's always crispy and light. I've lived in Portland and now live in the Midwest and still have not found a place that compares to Marco's!

What your .25 cents each for sauce will get you.
    Aubri H.

Let me start by saying I really love the tacos here. The taste is great and the food price is pretty decent. I frequent it a fair amount. My issue is the price gouge and stinginess on things like sauce. If you eat in, you can have the bottle of sauce but not until your order comes. If you get it to go you revive 1 sauce for every 3 tacos. Now, this may seem like plenty but the size of the sauces is the issue. At first the sauces came in a larger container but for the past couple of years they come in a 1/2 oz cup. I am attaching a photo for reference on the size. On top of that, if you ask for more you are paying .25 cents for each extra 1/2 oz sauce. I get being cost effective but man....you have a lot of customers and I would think you could do better by them.

2 fish tacos and 1 steak taco. They can do only one tortilla if you want!

I love tacos because of Marco's Place; and have yet to find another place that gives you a good size, great tasting taco, for just a dollar. I went to school in Salem and after discovering the place, I went there every week. I've now tried to find as good of a place in Chicago, Minneapolis and Seattle, and every time I go to the best rated place I'm let down. Nothing compares to Marcos. For the many times I've been there, I offer these tips to you. 1) I've read the reviews; yes, it can be busy. But call ahead and place your order-they are busy for a reason. You can also go straight up to the register and bypass the line if you call ahead. If you want to sit down and enjoy your tacos, plan ahead! 2) If you are craving these tacos on Sunday, try their Lancaster mall location across town. Same food and same owners. 3) If you are paying with a card, you'll need to purchase more than $5 worth of food. 4) Always ask if they have tamales-they hardly have them, but when they do it's worth getting. How many places can you order an assortment of tacos and be full with great food for only $5 or $6? Definitely worth getting to.

The bean dip tasted canned, the salsa was bland, Not a spark, not a kick, not a mariachi band. Chips and salsa should sing, make your taste buds feel alive But this batch barely whispered, "Hey... we tried." I ordered chicken enchiladas, beans joining the ride, Asked for salsa or hot sauce, hoping flavor would collide. They brought a tiny sampler cup, small but supreme That little shot of fire? Man, that stuff was the dream. Serve that as your house salsa big bowls, not petite Quit hiding the only thing that actually brings heat. Then came the bill cheap enough to shock, Like bargain-bin prices straight outta the clearance stock. So if you're a senior citizen, avoiding spicy thrills, Or you're rolling on a budget and just want full plates and refills, La Hacienda Real hits "cheap," but it misses the taste You'll get fed, sure, but man... it feels like a waste. I wanted to love it truly, with all my heart But those chips didn't crunch, and the salsa had no spark. I've had legendary dips, heroic salsas, chips steaming hot and great This was none of that... just a budget-friendly plate. So is it crappy, or just cheap? I'm honestly torn But next time I'll chase flavor somewhere better reborn.

(#1) For years when this taco cart operated along Portland Road (#2) it was low on the radar but known in the community. Fast forward a few years, it's not quite a brick & mortar, but a space for patrons to sit inside to enjoy their food while everything is cooked outside on a cart. The format isn't for everyone (#3), but it's right up my alley. Beyond the colorful murals along the interior and spacious seating, this is still very much a dive. The place is open typically at night and the cloud of grease that permeates the room from all the fatty meats being grilled up. The ventilation is questionable and the seating (fold up chairs and plastic tables) is hardly glamorous. I don't know if I'd have it any other way. For some folks, seeing certain taco meats sitting in a pool of lard / fat / questionable liquid might be an eyesore but once the grilling begins it's a new ballgame. I enjoy almost all the meats, whether it's their famous al pastor sitting on a tromp with a pineapple on top, or their variety of cecina, carnitas, cabeza (cheek, mainly), barbacoa, and asada. There's no guarantee of what they'll have on any given night, so I'm usually good with whatever they have available. The charred grill is also the same place for their tortillas, which are also fried in said lard, and give off this smokiness that might not be everyone's cup of tea. I think their barbacoa, which is chivo (#4) style, is really the best thing they have. The meat is incredibly tender, juicy, and full of flavor. It completely encapsulates their namesake in "ricos tacos" as one of their signature items. As always, it is cash only and speaking Spanish is a must. I'm not saying it's the best taqueria in the city, but for late night eats, it's certainly one of ones to beat. __________ (#1) Aka "The Godfather" (#2) Twas another time: https://www.yelp.com/biz/taqueria-el-padrino-salem (#3) Real talk: Most folks in Salem will likely never go to a place like this. My first impression was positive. The establishment was clean, brightly colored, and filled with natural light. The dining area is relatively small, with a modest number of tables and chairs, but it felt comfortable rather than cramped. The atmosphere was casual and welcoming. The employees were friendly, and the service was notably fast without feeling rushed. I ordered the chicken burrito for $8.99, genuinely unsure what that price point would translate to in size or quality. The answer was immediate. This was a substantial burrito, roughly 10 inches long, and packed from end to end with filling. Not one of those burritos that gives the illusion of size but turns out to be mostly tortilla. Once opened, the cross-section told the story clearly: generous meat, a good mix of fresh ingredients, and a burrito that looked thoughtfully assembled rather than carelessly thrown together. The flavor matched the appearance. It was hearty, satisfying, and exactly what one hopes for in a burrito. The chicken was flavorful, the ingredients worked well together, and nothing about it felt skimpy. The tortilla had a light browning to it, which added both texture and visual appeal. Just as important, it was wrapped exceptionally well. For a burrito this full, that matters. It held together while eating, keeping the filling where it belonged rather than turning into a mess halfway through. Another detail worth mentioning was the sauce selection. Having multiple options from mild to hot allowed for some customization, and they were worth sampling. They added another layer to the meal rather than feeling like an afterthought. What stood out most was the overall value. Quality, quantity, speed, and price do not always align this well, but here they did. For $8.99, the portion was generous, the food was flavorful, and the service was efficient. Add in the fact that Alberto's is open 24 hours a day, and it becomes even more appealing. In the end, what impressed me most was not simply the size of the burrito, but the fact that the entire experience felt solid across the board: clean setting, friendly staff, fast service, fair pricing, and food that delivered. After driving past this place for years, I can say it was worth finally stopping in. I would return.
