Great pizza but check your order before you leave the store. This is the 3rd time something was omitted from my order.

We arrived a little early before the dinner crowd, so it was nice and quiet inside. As soon as we walked in, Gwen greeted us with a warm, friendly hello and invited us to sit wherever we'd like. She came right over to our table, welcomed us again, and got our drink order. When she asked about appetizers, we decided to try the bruschetta. Our drinks and appetizer came out quickly, and I absolutely LOVED the bruschetta. Even my son enjoyed it, which says a lot considering he's not the biggest fan of tomatoes... oops My son ordered the lasagna, and I was pleasantly surprised that the pasta dishes came with a salad, especially at that price point. The Caesar salads were simple, with Ken's dressing on the side, but they were fresh, and that goes a long way for me. We both thoroughly enjoyed our meals, and Gwen provided consistently friendly, attentive service the entire time. The only downside for me was the dessert selection. They only offer one option, which surprised me for an Italian restaurant. I did try the cinnamon knots to go, and they were good, but I would've loved a few more choices. Overall, it was a great experience, and I'll definitely be back.

Side fact, Catholics abstain from meat with the exception of fish and seafood on Fridays during Lent. The more you know!! For this week's restaurant option, I chose to go to Johnny Brusco's for dinner this past Friday. This place is located in Hoover, which was inspired by New York style pizzas. I personally enjoyed the vibe of the restaurant. It was one of those places with a lot of things hung up on the wall, and as someone who likes to look around, it was very pleasing to the eyes. It wasn't too crowded when we went so service went by quick. The staff were lovely and gave great recommendations that aren't biased (as far as I know). Since I couldn't eat meat, my boyfriend and I split a 12" pizza that was half veggie deluxe with a cauliflower crust and half meat deluxe. I usually stay away from cauliflower crust pizzas because they tend to be chalky and lack flavor, but this one was so so good. It was very flavorful and you can tell that they used real, fresh ingredients. Our food also didn't take long to come out but was hot and fresh when it did. My half of the pizza is gluten-free and vegetarian, however, they are a flour-rich environment and it may not be ideal for individuals with extreme gluten intolerance, so I would keep that in mind. Overall, I would recommend this restaurant if you want a taste of New York or if you're just a pizza lover.

We walked up the street with a half dozen other diners. Wooden City is definitely not in the best part of BHM. Walking to the restaurant was a little sketchy, no need for a detailed description. Although we had reservations, the hostess looked at us like we had three eyes. She found a small table for us in the far back of the restaurant. No problem, at least we were seated. Our server greeted us quickly and went over the menu. We ordered drinks, blistered Hungarian peppers and a sausage and mushroom pizza. We told him that we were going to a concert and were on a little bit of a tight schedule. By the time our server checked on our food, the second time, we went from a little bit tight to full "gotta get out of here" mode. I guess the delay in getting our food was to give the kitchen time to burn our pizza. Over half of the thick, chewy crust was inedible. The bottom of the pie didn't fare much better. The peppers, on the other hand, were amazing. (not so much so at 2 am but that's just me!) They are a do not miss. We were at least able to settle our bill quickly and made it to the concert with time to spare. Overall, would we go back? Only if in the area - those peppers were amazing. Still, I definitely would not make a special trip.
