Dave's Pizza has been here forever! A fan-favorite for children's birthday parties, large groups, and easy lunches for a reason. I came here with three friends to have a simple dinner. A friend and I split the medium double pepperoni pizza. It was reminiscent of Costco pizza (compliment). It's greasy, but it's good. It was the correct amount of pizza for two people who weren't super hungry. The atmosphere here is so homey and simple, it's a great spot to be. Definitely family-friendly. Around dinner time, after the Homewood shops close, parking is super easy to find. They have a good beer and wine selection, sodas, but no iced tea! Maybe I just caught them on an off-day. I don't think any establishment in Alabama has ever told me they don't have iced tea. The servers are all very friendly, and our pizza came out piping hot and fresh. I was hoping for a better experience with Dave's. It wasn't bad. But there just wasn't really anything to rave about. We met some friends and decided to split a pizza. We did a half hot chick and half Kyle's Thai pizza. I was very underwhelmed with the Thai pizza. I didn't taste much curry. And possibly, that was due to splitting the pizza but if I would have known I wouldn't have done it. I really didn't taste anything unique about the Thai pizza at all. Extremely disappointed in Dave's as a local business. They recently agreed to sponsor a local disc golf tournament and then apparently "disagreed" with the way the winner won and berated him in front of a large crowd. This business was already over priced for what they offered which then made the way they treat their locals not surprising at all. Eek. Pizza was underdone, the sandwich I had tasted okay for about a minute until I got to the frozen meatballs. I was looking forward to trying something new, but this is not a location I will return to. The service was a tad on the awkward side as well, but once I complained about to meatballs, the gentleman that handled that was nice. He told me he would gladly remake them and explained that "they are supposed to thaw them before cooking them but obviously didn't" but, I declined a further order and didn't want anything else. The atmosphere was cool, though. I can see it being a cool little shack to go to. They only have one bathroom (that is decked out in Elvis stuff) but it was clean. The terrace is a raised platform that isn't super baby friendly, but that's alright. We made it work. Aside from this, I would also like to mention that everything they use is disposable. For the prices that you pay for underdone pizza, you would think they would be able to at least get more than paper plates (although I understand it's easy to dispose of.) Everything was so expensive for the quality. I came hungry, and I left even hungrier, and annoyed. Probably won't return again. Edit to add: The pizza sauce was watery??? Unhappy review: spent over $100 on dinner and when asked for a box for the remaining pizza was given a styrofoam clamshell box. Obviously it didn't fit and we had to wedge our $100 pizza into a tiny box, cramming it all together. I expect better. It's a pizza place. I ordered pizza. I expect a pizza box. I even learned that every year for the last twelve years that he has donated over 12,000 meals to The Jimmie Hail Mission and The Foundry on an anniversary in remembrance of his father, Dave, and his grandmother! I almost forgot, the first time I visited for lunch, I learned they had a pizza buffet, which are few and far between, and I think he donates the unserved pizza to the less fortunate on a daily basis? Despite waiting 15 minutes for our server to take out order (while watching her sit and talk and flirt with another co-worker the entire time) and despite finding aluminum foil in my bruschetta, we were having a good time and didn't complain as we both understand that things happen. Unfortunately, we didn't finish our bottle of Pinot Grigio and asked our server if we could take it with us. He agreed. We got the check and I kindly asked the server if he could get a bag for our wine bottle and attach an extra copy of the receipt. He returned with a brown paper bag, placed the bottle in the bag, crumpled it up, and handed it to me. I then asked kindly if he happened to have an extra copy of the receipt and a piece of tape or something to seal the bag. He told me he had never heard of such things, and I told him 'no worries, it's a recent law as of 2014 that requires the bottle to be sealed with a receipt'. The server then told me 'one moment' and walked back to the kitchen with the bottle. 10 minutes later, the owner stormed out, assaulted me with the bottle by slamming it into my chest as hard as he could, and screamed 'here is your f*****g bottle, I'm not doing a d**med other thing for you f**ks, now get the f**k out of my restaurant'. Everyone stopped eating and stared. I asked if it was a joke as I was very confused. He screamed some more and then stormed off. I have contacted the police and ABC board about the issue. Please be careful visiting this establishment as I have read about many similar instances like this on Yelp. I would definitely not recommend visiting this establishment unless you are prepared to protect yourself and your family, as the owner may blow his fuse and assault you at any time. read more

This is now my favorite pizza place in town. I can't believe I have never been here before. Lunch is a great time to visit because you can try many different options on the lunch buffet. Can't beat $8.99 for a fountain drink and some of the best pizza I've ever had. I tried the Dyno (Marinara, Pepperoni, Canadian Bacon, Italian & Pork Sausage, Chopped Bacon), Neo-Classic (Pesto, Red Onion, Pine Nut, Roma Tomato, Feta Cheese, Parsley), Nona (Alfredo, Spinach, Pecan, Grilled Chicken), Sweet Tang (Tangy BBQ sauce, Grilled Chicken, Chopped Bacon, Red Onion, Sharp Cheddar Cheese). I liked them all and would be hard pressed to choose a favorite. The crust was what I liked best. It was a hand tossed style crust that I could have eaten by itself with some marinara and been happy. Server also came around offering slices of an apple dessert pizza (streusel topping lightly drizzled with icing) that was excellent as well. We started outside but moved inside when the waitress noticed it was starting to sprinkle. She was so nice and kind I wish I remembered her name. There was live music inside and games outside. Not sure how much of that is specific to 4th of July. The pizza was very good. I forgot to take pictures of it! We ate too fast! For me, it was a little pricey but over all very good. I came here on a Thursday for the lunch buffet and left feeling rather impressed. You seat yourself and go towards the enticing looking 3-4 pizzas they have which they replace with new types of pizza frequently. The food: I tried 6 different slices being the plain cheese, pepperoni, alfredo veggie, BBQ chicken, pesto, and meat lovers. My favorites were by far the BBQ chicken and Alfredo veggie both were above average. I also got to try the dessert pizza (basically apple pie flavored pizza). Overall just slightly above average but its a buffet so its unlimited! The service: The lady serving us was very nice and kept bringing different pizzas by if we wanted to grab something fresh out of the oven. Dave's has been part of Homewood for years and it's fine but certainly not great. They seem to shoot themselves in the foot constantly. Last night was a great example. When we arrived with a party of five, they were busy and we had to wait for about twenty minutes for a table. No big deal. During this time, the rush slows down and servers are able to catch their breath. When we're seated, we had to wait another 15 minutes for a server to come to the table. Servers were hanging out in the kitchen, chatting with friends and propped against the wall with the exception of one guy who seemed to be doing everything. We waited and waited. Occasionally a server would walk by and glance at us but we were otherwise unnoticed. Finally the guy asks if we've been helped. He was pleasant and mumbled something about it not being his section and took our order. Tables who were seated after us we're getting recognized, getting drinks and appetizers lightning fast and we just dragged. The pizza was fine but it's just not on par with the service you typically get at restaurants around Homewood. Probably the biggest annoyance to me was charging 25 cents for a glass of water. I get that there are costs associated with everything but we've already ordered an appetizer, $40 in beer and over $50 in pizza and they charged us because we each wanted water. It just seemed petty given that we've already spent $20 per person at the table. The prices would suggest that you're at a top-tier pizza place but the nickel and dime you like a cheap cafeteria. It's foolishness. On the community health side, tables are less than 6 feet apart and guests were not required to wear masks upon entering or moving about the restaurant. They have a sign up about masks being required but it is not enforced whatsoever. read more

I went to Dave's Pizza for their all-you-can-eat lunch buffet and really enjoyed it! The deal comes with a drink and the pizza was really good. We went towards the end of the deal so the pizza wasn't the freshest but still tasted great. Our waiter was really attentive and did a great job clearing our used plates in between buffet runs. I do think some of the buffet area could have been cleaned and maintained a bit better but this may have just been due to the hour that we came. I was initially going to just get a pizza to go and have that for lunch, but after taking a look at the four pies that were out for the all-you-can-eat lunch, I opted to skip the pizza and dig in. Good crunchy crust, lots of toppings, plenty of flavor. This was a hit! You'll experience different varieties than I did, but I was able to sample a pepperoni & sausage, pepperoni & green peppers and a chicken barbecue. All would have been excellent on their own, and were better for being able to have a bit from each one. Self-service on paper plates. So what? I'm skipping the anecdote and diving right into the breakdown: THE STAFF: friendly, attentive, and professional THE ATMOSPHERE: Interesting. But not in a good way. Dave's is an all-covered outdoor seating with a 50s auto body shop meets dollar store decor vibe. To put it in perspective, there was a hula girl lamp at the hostess stand, Black and red checkered walls, Mardi Gras beads hanging from the fencing, and plastic chandeliers hanging from painted open joist steel. Sometimes atmospherical chaos can be charming- here it was simply stressful. THE FOOD & PRICE: Usually these are separate categories for me, but not this time! As with any product or service, there is always a delicate balance between quality and cost- you must increase on to increase the other. Similarly, I am willing to accept lower quality food as long as you don't ask me to pay a lot for it. Dave's pizza is mediocre (at best) and OBSCENELY overpriced. $23 for a medium pizza... That has three toppings... is served on cardboard... left both my date and myself hungry afterwards...and has no flavor? I was agog. I like pizza of all shapes and sizes but this truly tasted like one of those frozen pizzas that you pop in the microwave. And I wouldn't have been shocked if that's what we had just paid $23 for. The Caprese salad was also disappointing. The tomatoes were fresh but the Mozzarella was gritty and the Balsamic was generic and watery. Also, where I'm from, you always make sure to have a good ranch dressing for crust-dippin'- Dave's ranch was not even worthy of the dry, flavorless pizza crust. THE USE OF DISPOSABLE EVERYTHING: Everything was served in/on styrofoam or disposable plastic. Not only is this tacky AF, but way to contribute everything you've got to destroying the planet. I would have loved a "glass" of water. If I had known I'd be getting a styrofoam cup, I'd have opted for nothing at all. Also, maybe my poor waitress could see when I need a refill instead of continuously coming by and picking up my cup to see if it was empty or not. FINAL THOUGHTS: I'm sorry to be so harsh, but I pride myself in telling it like it is, and I don't want anyone visiting Dave's with the misconception that they're in for a treat... unless by "treat", they mean overpriced microwave pizza on a hot patio. read more
