That could have been the end of it. Instead he stayed on with me. I'm a first-time homebuyer and I don't know much of anything about how houses actually work. I asked him a hundred questions that had nothing to do with drywall, and he answered every one of them -- patiently, in plain language, knowing full well I wasn't going to be a paying customer. He pointed out a few things I hadn't thought to look at. Not once did he make me feel small for not knowing. You could tell he wasn't doing it for the job. He was doing it because that's who he is, and because he could tell I was a little over my head. In my experience that's rare anywhere, and rarer in the trades, where it's easy to take advantage of someone who doesn't know what they're looking at. Jim did the opposite.
