We went to Marais for a late Mothers' Day "lunner," arriving at 3:00 pm. While they have free valet parking, we spied an empty spot immediately upon entering the drive and self-parked. The exterior of the restaurant is beautiful, and is surrounding by decking graced with wrought iron railings overlooking the bayou. The interior of the main dining area has an elegant feel, with crisp white table cloths and napkins, crystal chandeliers, and gas lamp sconces throughout. Even without the beautiful light fixtures, there is plenty of light from outside coming through large windows. We noticed people dressed in church clothes, and also people wearing shorts and flip flops. There does not seem to be a dress code. I liked that everyone seemed to feel comfortable in the elegant atmosphere, regardless of dress.
Marais served a "limited" menu for Mothers' Day, but the limited menu still offered a good variety. In our party of seven, everyone was pleased with their choices. Working my way around the table, my nephew ordered the Red Snapper over Creole Rice with Blistered Asparagus, my sister ordered the Blacked Chicken Breast Pontchartrain over Creole Rice with Pontchartrain Sauce, my daughter enjoyed Holly's Strawberry Salad with Lobster & Crawfish bisque, my mom-in-law ordered the Cajun Grits Mes Amis (which had shrimp and gouda cheese, with spinach and mushrooms), my husband had the Crawfish Ettouffee, and his brother had the Beef Tenderloin Sliders. I ordered the Seafood Platter -- fried catfish, shrimp, lump crab beignets -- I gave the fried oysters to my mom-in-law and husband because I don't like oysters. Also, I did not eat the fries because they were not very crisp or flavorful. They served more as a bed for the catfish, shrimp, and oysters to rest upon.
Overall everyone was very pleased with their choices and we shared tastes all around the table so we could try all the things. Our server was very attentive, checking on us often. He recommended the cocktail of the day: called the "Samba," it featured wine, cranberry juice, peach puree, and vodka -- it was delicious!
Our disappointments were as follows: we were told the mothers would receive a special treat, which was a little pecan praline tart of some sort, but he returned to our table to say they had run out of them. The dessert menu card at each of our places showed six or seven dessert choices, but we were told they'd only prepared for three dessert choices, so the beignets and coffee I'd been dreaming of throughout the meal were not available. I feel they should not have put the dessert cards on the table if they could not offer everything on the card. With only three choices, it would have been easy for the server to simply tell the table what was available. Having said that, those who ordered dessert enjoyed their key lime pies, chocolate pecan pies, and Banana Fosters bread pudding.
Also - there is some confusion over price points depending on which website you look at. Yelp shows a price range of three dollar signs, whereas the Marais FB page shows a price range of two dollar signs. I think the three dollar signs is more accurate, as our party of seven had a check of $286, before tip, averaging $40 per person. The server asked if we needed the check split, which was nice, because I've been to some restaurants where the server acts as if this is a huge inconvenience.
Overall, it was a lovely Mothers' Day meal and we enjoyed ourselves very much. Marais is a good place for a special occasion, or maybe a spot to go share an appetizer or have dessert and a cup of coffee, if you're not looking to spend $80 on a meal for two. I'm sure we'll visit again. read more
