Great place to dine I Pekin, excellent bar selection and drink list. The food is great, love the mixture of quick selections and fine dining options. The Pizza oven offers great choices as well. Their Traditional Old Fashioned is the best in the area Their service is always great and the lively atmosphere is the best.

Review #100! Came here with my sister before seeing the Bob Dylan movie. Decided to get a Reuben since I was in town and it's kind of like a back-home classic for me now. Was pretty good! Also, Will Ferrell has been here so there's that.

Review Visit: April 4th, 2016 Mehquet's. The opening line to this post is very 'meh' but that's how I felt about Maquet's. A few people I know from Pekin raved about Maquet's. When something pops up on my radar via suggestions or otherwise, I add it to my list and eventually get around to checking it out. On a particular day where my girlfriend and I felt like traveling but not driving 1+ hours to experience something new, Pekin was the perfect place to explore. We ended up only doing a few things and Maquet's was our second of three stops. After parking in a small parking lot about half a block away, we entered and were greeted with probably the wood-iest bar I've ever been in. Top to bottom and wall to wall wood. It was well-worn wood so it had that worn in look that makes a place look snazzier rather than aged and old. In my opinion, at least. We snagged some seats at the bar and our bartender took our drink order while getting us menus. As we waited for our food, I couldn't stop staring at the giant fridge of beers behind the bar. There were a million different beers to pick from that even the pickiest beer drinker wouldn't have issues finding something to drink. After the beer fridge, my eyes wandered to the rest of the bar. The aesthetics of Maquet's was perfect. It had that coziness of a coffeehouse with a mix of drunken debauchery hidden in the walls, waiting for the fun of the night to get here. There was a big dining area behind us but since we were at the bar, we didn't go wandering. While my eyes were taking in the scene, my girlfriend's eyes were on the food that was placed in front of us. I swiveled around and was shocked at the glorious meal placed in front of me. Now that's what food should look like when served (see below for what I ate). We both got the Rail House Burger as we both love the kick of BBQ. Sadly, the looks were better than the bites. Yes, sadly, the food wasn't all that great. For having bbq sauce, pepperjack cheese, haystack onions and other condiments, the burger lacked some pizzazz. So many potential ingredients for flavor and none of them worked. My shy girlfriend felt the same. All show and no wow. The french fries were decent though its hard to mess up those up. With all the praise that I heard about Maquet's, its such a shame that it turned out to be meh. As always, I am willing to give a place a second try. I feel like maybe we just had an off day as there is no way that burger should've been as plain tasting as it was.

The dining area looks like it it would accommodate about 50 people (max) and the decor was retro with wood paneled walls and formica tabletops. Everything was clean and well kept. We were greeted by a waitress who was knowledgeable and hugely friendly. The menu was pretty expansive and the pricing seemed reasonable. We opted for traditional dinner fare, roast beef, mashed potatoes with brown gravy for me and she had turkey, mashed potatoes (no gravy). We both passed on the dressing that came with the meal and both chose rolls and a vegetable as our two sides. The cost for each meal was about $14. Add $3 for one soft drink (I had water) and the out the door cost was a touch over $33. About the food: Neither of us was impressed with the meal. After talking it over we decided that the best description of the meal was that it had been assembled VS. being cooked. My roast beef meal looked to have been slices of precooked meat, with instant potatoes, which was covered with factory made brown gravy. Her turkey meal looked like they were in fact real pieces turkey. The meat was small and looked like someone had chipped larger pieces up into bite sized chunks, with instant potatoes. Neither meal visually made you you go WOW! and the taste was forgettably bland. Overall, we were just unimpressed. Neither of us felt that the taste, quality or quantity justified the cost. I have fond memories of eating here with my mother and I was looking forward to rekindling those feelings and well....it didn't happen. Next time I'm passing by, I'll keep on going.

I actually think it was bigger than what I ordered but I was okay with that, leftovers! Asparagus was perfectly cooked as well, with just the right amount of flavor. Service-wise, our server was brand new so she had to go back to the kitchen several times to ask questions. It was not busy when we got there, so we didn't mind. My girlfriend and I were wanting breakfast and I was asking around what sounded and looked good. She suggested Busy Corner and I had thought she meant Cobbler Corner. Nope, there is a Busy Corner and a Cobbler Corner in Pekin. We showed up around 9am and it was still busy with the breakfast crowd. I guess this is why it's called Busy Corner. We parked in what appears to be a closed business' parking lot next door and headed in. Upon entering, I was shocked at how open the place is. With it being so busy, I didn't feel it was appropriate to take a photo from the entrance but trust me when I say that the dining floor is a square room with nothing but tables and chairs. A hostess (or something) came out from the back and nodded at an empty table for us to sit at. We grabbed the seat along the right wall and were given menus. Emily gave me a rundown of what she knew on the menu and her experiences here. She ordered her usual John Wayne breakfast skillet thing. I noticed a Bacon Waffle on the menu and debated on if it was a waffle that came with bacon or a waffle with bacon in it. Our waitress cleared the air on what it was when it came time to order. Can you guess what I ordered? BACON WAFFLE! It's a waffle with bacon in it. What a fun novelty. It took a little while for the food to come out due to how busy it was. Once it came out, I was impressed with how well the waffle looked with bacon in it. Emily's meal that the Duke loves looked just as good. I grabbed the syrup and poured a ton of syrup on both sides. I dug in and have to say this novelty of a meal is just that. I'm no food snob or professional but after a few bites, I knew the type of bacon they used didn't mesh with the waffle mix at all. I believe it was a hickory-type bacon used and it didn't go well at all with the generic waffle mix. Despite that, it wasn't bad at all. I put the whole thing down and each bite was just a confusing taste of bacon and waffle that tasted separately with each bite. Due to some recent food allergies, I had to decline the butter that came on the waffle. Maybe that would help bind the flavors together? While the flavor was odd, the portion size was huge. It was nearly as big as the plate it was served on and with my voracious appetite, I had only the waffle and the filled me up until early afternoon (and a whole front/back yard mow). Emily couldn't finish her John Wayne breakfast and had to take half home with her. As for why this place as a meal named or based on The Duke or John Wayne, I am at a loss to explain why. Maybe it's mentioned on the menu and I somehow overlooked it or maybe it's just a known fact... I will never know. If you know and want to share, leave a comment below. I had mentioned this place was an empty square. This works for jamming in as many tables as you can but also causes some slight claustrophobia-like feel because your neighbor sits a bit closer than a normal restaurant. With that in mind, it does make having a conversation a bit difficult due to everyone's voice filling the room. I repeatedly had to go 'huh?' 'what?' more so than normal. But... I'm glad my initial skepticism was extinguished once we sat down and had our food. Just goes to show that you can't judge a book by it's cover.
