This store is a total rip off, they have a snickered cost on liquor, when you get to register it's 8-10 dollars higher then the stated cost When asked why there was a difference in costs I have been told twice that they had a price increase but have not changed the costs on bottles! My whiskey shelf at home holds 24-ish bottles. A spot opened up this week when I finally drained an Old Forester 1920 that I bought seven or eight months ago. I didn't love it enough to replace it, so space 24 is open for something new or an old favorite. My three regular bottle shops haven't had anything unique to offer lately, so I decided to try a new place. The Yelps said Maple Leaf Liquor on Saratoga has a good bourbon selection so I gave it a go yesterday. I left sans whiskey, but not empty-handed. Honestly, I didn't know what to expect of this shop from the curb appeal, but walking in I quickly realized it is more of a well-stocked bodega than a bottle shop. Maple Leaf Liquor is a mish-mash of cigars, cigarettes, snacks, beer, wine and liquor. That said, for the limited square footage things are well organized and there seems to be the right amount of good stuff for anyone, regardless of taste or budget. Entering the store, I quickly spotted the whiskey section and breezed past a locking glass cabinet near the checkout stand which had tater-baiter bottles in it. I don't buy those above MSRP but noted three bottles of Blanton's for $179 and some Old Carter (don't know which batch) for $299. If you can't live without that stuff, don't care what you pay and needs it bad, there was some available yesterday. Have at it. After ringing up a customer the owner greeted me and asked me if I was looking for bourbon. I confirmed. He asked what I was looking for. I told him I would know it when I saw it. Then he began to pitch the Old Carter and Blanton's I walked by. I said, "I don't pay those prices." I say this to a lot of shop keepers and it usually offends them and they begin to explain why they price those bottles like they do. It entertains me a bit. Hey, I'm all for an unregulated, free-market economy, but it doesn't mean I'm going to play the game. This fellow handled my comment so well. We had a great conversation about what he sells. When he realized I probably wasn't seeing a bourbon I wanted he asked if I like Japanese Whiskeys. I do. He offered his best two Nikka bottles. I almost went for the Nikka Days, but it's a little light, best suited for highball-sodas and at $79 a bit of a spend as a mixer. So no. I did notice he has good pricing on things like Knob Creek 9-Year and Pikesville Rye. Good to know. Then he asked me if I like craft beer. I do. How about IPA? Yes. So he said, "I don't have Pliny right now, but I have some other good stuff you may enjoy," and took me to the chiller, pointing out his mostly local selection. I appreciated how he was selling them in 4-packs at decent pricing and not breaking them into singles and jacking the price like his nearest competitor over on Williams. I went with a couple of his recommendations and got out at around $24. I had two of the Revision New England Style Double IPAs last night and really enjoyed them. For me, Maple Leaf Liquors is not the be-all, end-all, but I really enjoyed the experience. The owner is a nice guy who tries hard to satisfy. He was very open and honest about how he does business and that means a lot to me. For this reason I'm sure to return for the things I know he has available, which is to say sometimes, but not all the time. He does deserve my repeat business. read more

Not quite sure how this liquor store has garnered such raving reviews... I came here last Saturday since we were having poker night at my friend's place in San Jose and I wanted to make sure we had plenty of liquid fuel. I found the beer selection pretty sad and I wasn't able to find a 6 pack of Anchor Steam. I had to settle on a 6 pack of Sierra Nevada and a 6 pack of Corona. As far as red wine is concerned, their selection is also quite eclectic and I couldn't find a $10-15 bottle of zin, so I ended up selecting a Malbec. Thankfully, they did have a 375ml of Ketel One, so I give them props for that. It's a perfectly adequate liquor store, don't get me wrong... I just don't think it deserves 5 stars across the board. Case in point, I'd have gone to Bevmo in a heartbeat since their selection and prices is vastly superior. read more

Convenient location off of Saratoga Avenue and San Tomas Aquino (near Amato's). It's stocked with all the goodies and drinks commonly found at liquor stores at liquor store prices. Who needs a bluetooth headset when the cashier has a 2.4 Ghz cordless phone clipped to his shirt talking all day! I've been a customer for years and have had no problems whatsoever. read more

Excellent Customer service from Harry. Just depends which guy you get. I was looking for a bottle of limited edition Hennessy. The Hennessy website said this particular store had it. The problem was it had been a few months so I went in expecting it to be sold out.The guy told me they didn't have it; but he would call around and find me a bottle. 2 days later he found one, called me and charged me the regular price of $33 for all his troubles. The limited edition bottles sell for $41 at bevmo or $46 at other liquor stores. read more

Didn't like the fact they carded me at age 32 but getting over that annoyance overall it is a decent place.

I used to go here the time because it is my local liquor store, but will never again. My girlfriend went here who turned 21 last month and has a valid California ID that she got a few years back. He said he could not take it because the id was not "horizontal". This is just outrageous to me because there was a period in time that DMV made IDs in this way and is 100% legit. She has used it at other stores, lounges, and it worked perfectly fine. Perhaps its too much for someone who has a license to sell liquor to know the law and how to tell a real ID from a fake one. His lack of knowledge is simply idiotic. read more

Awesome place was calling around the area for specific rum and Harry was able to get it within less than a day. That spokes a lot to me. Maple Leaf Liquors is my favorite store to go to! I love the location, (next to my house) love the eployees. Boss is probably the coolest of them all! On weekends its the party central before all the parties! All of my friends go there and don't go to much other places for our party necessities. I hope everyone will respect this place as my friends and i do. Great service, and great selection of alcohol. Always bringing in new stuff for us to try out! Staff here is hella nice. The beef jerky in the green bag is bomb and they sell pink Gatorade here which is amazing. This place is right up the street from my house so me and my bestie are here a few times a week and the guy who works at night is always super nice so we're happy :) oh and they sell alcohol here too so that's an automatic 5 stars. read more

I attempted to call and ask ONE question about a certain alcohol and the owner who answered said a totally different answer that I didn't even ask. This is a great store, particularly when it comes to customer service and pricing. I have been coming here for years because the pricing is very fair even compared with Bevmo. More importantly the guy who runs the store Harry is very dedicated to his clients and takes pride in the store. Its a very relaxed environment and Harry is on a first name basis with most customers and is a funny guy They have a good selection beer and really good selection of liquor all at prices that beat any of the local liquor stores. If you are into rare, limited quantity liquors, ask for Harry. I am a huge fan of hard to get bourbons and various other liquors and Harry has pulled off some miracle special orders for me including Jefferson Presedential, Pappy Van Winkle (good luck finding it anywhere else at a reasonable price), Four Roses limited edition( just picked up a bottle), Orphan Barrel, Michters 10 year, I could go on forever. I have seen special order products like Johnny Walker Wood and Clix vodka come through the store as well. Bottom line, this is a great liquor store for the average customer, if you are into any of the types of products I listed earlier, this is the best liquor store you will find. read more

I just bought a case of Napa Cellars Chardonnay from Harry @ Maple Leaf and the bottle cost was one dollar per bottle less than BevMo down the street. Just an amazing guy to talk to and request all the special items I need.Maple Leaf carries wines such as Opus, Caymus, Joseph Phelps Insignia, Cakebread etc all year long. Last year I bought a case of Ridge wines from them as well, even though they never carried it in their store but Harry made sure I get my case of Ridge Lytton Springs. Also, recently I have been buying some hard to find bourbons from Maple Leaf as well. Harry knows what he is selling and how to get certain antique bottles for his customers who seem to be very high end collectors. Well, first of all I like the attitude of the folks who work there. Always willing to talk besides business and try to help you out as much as they can with selecting a product. They have almost every type of liquor one would need for any occasion. Pricing is very competitive. Some of their prices even beat Bevmo and Costco, I was surprised to notice that.
