Had heard about the Maple Leaf from a lot of locals. Unfortunately we were not here on a Tuesday but had a great time on a Saturday night. The vibe was really chill and just enjoyed the sounds. If you haven't been here before, this is a must visit. Standing room only in the main area. In some cases, you feel like you are in a friends basement listening to musicians jamming. I only have one word to sum up the historic Maple Leaf Bar, and that word: REAL! If you're looking to hang with some real people, hear some real live music, in a real part of New Orleans, which equals a real good time, then this is your venue. It's located in the historic Carrollton area of NOLA and definitely far away from the cliche tourist-friendly French Quarter. Right when you walk in your greeted by the bar that serves a great array of liquors to an icy cold Abita brew. Head to the rear and you'll come across another bar that will serve you as you play on their only pool table. There's also a very cozy outdoor patio area in the rear of the bar that's protected by large oak trees. But the gem is its stage and live music area which is situated at the front of the bar. Tuesday nights are a must for any first-timer to the Crescent City, as I soon found out on my first trip to New Orleans. Rebirth Brass Band gets the place poppin and creates a great atmosphere once the alcohol gets flowing through the patrons. Definitely going back here on my next visit. After the bars closes, I also recommend hittin up Squeals BBQ, which sits next door on Oak Street and usually stays open to feed the hungry drunks. Love this place. It's a great little New Orleans institution. The live shows here are very intimate, especially rebirth on Tuesday nights. It tends to get very packed so I suggest getting here early, grabbing some dinner on oak st ( plenty of great places to choose from) and then walking over to maple leaf. You wait out by the back bar or the outdoor patio until the live shows begin. That's the best way to beat the crowd lining up on Tuesdays! Rebirth put on a hell of a show. Snag a spot anywhere, the venue is small enough so you don't necessarily have to be in the front of the stage to enjoy the performances. Warning, the place gets packed with people wall to wall and it gets HOT. My suggestion would be stand near the back, enjoy the performance and give yourself that little extra room to dance! Came here for their Sunday crawfish boil. Crawfish boils are every Sunday at 10pm and they also have live music which they charge a $10 cover for (includes all you can eat crawfish). There's was a lot of older nola natives who you could tell were not keen on out-of-towners/nola transplants but it didn't really bother us. The boil is awesome, so much food but you better be fast because the locals huff the food down. Also, don't ask the locals "how to eat crawfish" because they will ignore you. We ended our trip visiting this great spot that was recommended by a local. It's located in the uptown area which is about 15 to 20 mins from French Quarter area. Tuesday nights apparently are the best nights. We got to see Rebirth band and they we're great! While the band took a break we went outside to get fresh air and saw a lady who was selling street food. Her name is Daniel and her company is called "Lovechild's Catering & Sweets" She had jambalaya, chicken, Marconi & Cheese and seafood pasta. Everything was so good and hot!!! Please just come here on a Tuesday night when Rebirth Brass Band is in town. The band will get you jumping, dancing, and smiling from ear to ear. You'll have to check frequently to calendar for when they play but it's typically a Tuesday night. Cool venue with decently priced drinks and a great staff. To upgrade the experience, take the street car there with a day pass for $3 cash. read more

Had the pleasure of visiting on a Monday night when Papa Grows Funk was playing. It was 4th of July so I wasn't sure what to expect. Everytime I'm in NOLA, locals keep telling me to visit Maple Leaf. I came in and sat down at the bar, $10 cover; it was 10:30 and there were plenty of seats. It was a neat twist of fate to see Anthony Bordain's San Francisco episode on the TV above the bar. Bartender came over right away and asked, "What'll it be baby?" "I'll have a Heffewiezen and keep 'em coming". OK, but for me, a cheap date, 'keep 'em comin' means two. LOL. $5 each, in a plastic cup with a personally squeezed lemon wedge. NICE. Mostly locals at the bar and as long as you're not acting like a square ass tourist, you'll make some friends pretty quick. I gave it T minus 30 seconds before I was chatting it up with a few people just off of work. The band comes on around 11pm. Aside from the lady in the red 1985 shoulder padded bejeweled dress dancing right in front of the stage, there were maybe 10 other people groovin to the funk at that time. Great people watching, awesome music and by midnight the place was busy. Not packed, but a nice sized crowd. The band's guitarist, introduced to me as June: the Jimmy Hendrix of Japan, was OFF THE HOOK! The band leader, John Gros, was awesome at getting the crowd engaged. Papa grows funk earned it's place on my pandora playlist. My only ick about Maple Leaf was the bathroom, but it's a dive bar, so I get it! Maybe if I didn't have to drive and I was more smashed, I wouldn't have looked in the toilette before flushing to see the stains of patrons past who couldn't hold their liquor. read more

Feeling mildly patriotic being from Canada - we proudly entered the district which featured the Maple Leaf Bar! It was at least a 10 minute drive from the Bourbon Street area but incredibly unique in a completely different way from Bourbon Street or Frenchman Street. There was a popular restaurant in the area that seated people even on the opposite side of the street and you would see the servers carrying plates of food across the traffic! They also had a table atop a pickup truck! An art store across the street featured a grand piano and chillout couches as you walked in. The owner played electric guitar as entertainment while you perused the art. The owner was friendly and told us about a really unique thing they do: live art creation during the performance of music at the Maple Leaf Bar. The night prior, the drummer from the Red Hot Chilli Peppers had painted an abstract piece with his drum sticks, in which he ended up affixing his sticks to the art at the end. Very cool piece of art and I'd never heard of this before! We had arrived to see the Rebirth Brass Band, who had been playing there for over 20 odd years with different members. We caught the band that played prior and they were really funky. We were front row when the Rebirth Brass Band started, which lasted all of 30 seconds. For whatever reason, they thought it was necessary to amplify their instruments... and the speakers were in the front row.... it was the absolute loudest show I've ever heard and I probably got hearing damage. I wish they had warned us or offered ear plugs. There was nowhere to both comfortably see and hear the band. We ended up chilling on the patio with our drinks and enjoying the dampened sound of the live jazz from the patio. It was actually quite romantic and the music was great - just not how we planned to experience the classic band. read more

They book great acts and the Rebirth Brass Band plays every Tuesday but the bar itself is nothing all that special. It's exceedingly crowded and if you want to be anywhere near the band you'll be elbow to elbow with your fellow patrons all night in a hot room unless you go toward the back or out on the nice outdoor patio - where you can't hear the music. With a $20 cover charge at the door I expect to be paying for the music but here it's just hard to enjoy the music in this space if you're over 25 or feel the need for some semblance of personal space. If you want to get a drink it's virtually impossible to get to the bar (and back to your spot on the floor) but if you can make it work you'll pay $5 for a tiny little plastic cup which gets very expensive. Overall, the Maple Leaf is definitely not my favorite music venue in NOLA, I may consider going back if there is an act I can't pass up but I'd much rather go down to Frenchmen Street or someplace that has seating. read more

Stopped in here for a beer while I waited to get into Jacques Imo's next door. It's a dark, dingy dive which is very cool but hopefully you're in good company or into the Grateful Dead or the like cause that's the only type of music playing on the jukebox, I think the most "exciting" selection I saw was Journey. I was planning on coming back here after dinner on Thursday night cause a few people raved about how great the trio is that plays here but we would've had to wait another 1 1/2 hrs after dinner for them to come on and there is NOTHING...I mean NOTHING... else in this area except for the restaurant next door, another way down the street and a drug store and it's not a cool area to just hang out and walk around at night. Hopefully next time I visit I get to come and catch the live music. read more

Tuesday night is amazing. A few things to get out of the way, it's a little bit of a ride from the French Quarter, $20 cover and somewhat crowded. Who cares!! Rebirth was great! Not much more to say that hasn't already been said. Fun to see them live. They go on right around 11pm and played an hour set and then took a 30 or so minute break. The music played in the bar before and after is also good so you will have fun the entire night Frenchie was painting Rebirth and added some additional excitement to the room. The crowd was one of the most diverse and cohesive crowds I have seen in a long time. Good on them. Very very mixed and no tension. The way is should be!!!! Drinks were cheap!!!! I'm going to sound like a broken record at this point, but yes everything you've read so far is true. If you are in town on a Tuesday night, it is imperative that you come here to see Rebirth perform. Now I was a bit skeptical at first - 1). This was my first (of two) nights in town and I was a bit tired because I had driven from Charlotte 2). Rebirth didn't go on until 11 and I feared I wouldn't make it due to my sleepiness, 3). It was the night of the 2016 presidential election and I like most of the country really wanted to see the result. But alas, I decided to Uber it here and brought my dad along for the show. Thankfully, all of those worries melted away once we got here. First off Rebirth was great! I've never seen a brass band perform at a bar and seeing these guys live is a true testament to how great the music scene is in NOLA. Also, I know what you're thinking and yes it is definitely worth the $20 cover. Once you get here, you will notice that there is a front bar and a back bar. For the second half of the show, we hung out at the back bar and made friends with Travis who is one of the most colorful, friendliest bartenders I've ever had. We all took several shots together and watched with amusement as he tried to flip empty beer bottles in front of him into the trash can behind him. We also had a few drinks with some of the other locals as we listened to the music and watched the election results roll in. So if you ever find yourself in the crescent city on a Tuesday, make your way to the Maple Leaf. You will surely be in for great music, an upbeat, non-pretentious or douchey crowd, awesome bartenders, and strong drinks. I will definitely be back. read more

"Maple Leaf was fun. In SUV and drinking beer." That was the text message my boyfriend received late at night from a tipsy Janney B., as she and her friends left the Maple Leaf Bar in New Orleans. I silenced my phone after sending that text and left the poor guy wondering whose SUV I was in and what I was doing with whom. Both valid questions. I don't recall 100% of our MLE (Maple Leaf Experience), but I remember we came here after a terrific, but way too filling, dinner at Jacques-Imo's next door. (A certain failed model has been said to seek out copious amounts of liquor in hopes of puking said heavy dinner into bushes while dumb floozy friend holds her hair back.) Anyhoo, the band was awesome and the drinks were affordable. We had tequila, kamikazes, jager bombs, more kamikazes, and beer. There was a cover charge - but, worth it because this was obviously a popular place to be. We made some friends and one of the girls even offered to give us all a ride to Bourbon Street in her boyfriends SUV - After we told her she resembled Britney Spears, which is basically the Louisiana equivalent of winning the Nobel Peace Prize. read more

I came here directly from Jacques-Imo's Cafe on the recommendation of the owner and staff who came over and partied with us after they got off work. I have never been to a better live music venue. It was filled with friendly locals - who later in the night showed us the town. We drank almost as much as we ate next door but danced it all off to the Rebirth Brass Band. There are a few things you can count on at Maple Leaf: - The band will start no less than an hour after whatever time the Maple Leaf staff tells you when you call to ask. - The band will start no less than an hour after the start time listed on the website. - The Maple Leaf will oversell their capacity by 100%. And they will continue to let a ridiculously inordinate amount of additional people in. - After they let all the aforementioned people in, they will continue to let in the other 50 people who were still standing in line outside. And the other 50 people who get in line after them. - If this place were ever to catch on fire and you are standing anywhere other than immediately next to the front door, you can kiss your life goodbye. - Bartenders and staff are friendly. - The drinks are solid. If you ever find yourself, wittingly or unwittingly, turned into a human sardine by the Maple Leaf's insatiable desire for cash money cover charges, have the sense to ask for a refund when you leave. They're polite enough and they'll give it to you. And look around online-- with a little effort you can find a phenomenal band, brass or otherwise, to see elsewhere pretty much 7 days a week in NOLA. Later in the night we ran into some fellow sardines who decided to stay for the show. They said that Maple Leaf kept trying to pack people in all night, despite the fact that they were far, far, far over capacity and all the people that they were letting in had zero chance of ever seeing the stage. They were drenched in sweat and said that the entire place turned into a sauna despite that fact that all people were doing was standing, packed more tightly than anything they had ever seen. I've now happened in here on a couple of separate occasions with similarly happy results: the Maple Leaf, a rollicking tribute to brass that seems to teeter with locals bobbing up and down to the festive on stage focus. It's probably no small coincidence that I've dropped by on nights when the brass band looms large, and while the room always seems ripe with locals (best I can tell), regular seems to seldom equate to ordinary. In fact, most days the audience weaves and moves as marionettes might, if those marionettes had a couple of cocktails in em and were raging politely against the dying of the light. My girlfriend and I visited Maple Leaf Bar on a Tuesday night in order to see the Rebirth Brass Band play their weekly show. I had seen the Rebirth Brass Band at Austin City Limits several years ago, and I really enjoyed their show (why see Skrillex push buttons on his MacBook when you could see these guys?). After putting our name on the list at Jacques-Imo's, we went over to Maple Leaf for a few pre-dinner drinks. Well drinks are $5 there, and the bartenders actually pour a decent amount of liquor into the drinks. Maple Leaf has a cool backyard area, so we took our drinks outside and sat on a bench. Early in the evening on Tuesdays, it's just a really chill dive bar. We left around 9 pm for dinner, and then returned shortly after 10 pm for the Rebirth Show. The cover is $15 which is a little high for a "local" show, but is understandable considering how renowned Rebirth is. The bar wasn't very overly crowded at 10 pm. We found a table by the back bar in the room behind the main room, so we sat down there. We expected to be able to hear the band well from that place. During the next hour, people continued to fill up the venue until the main room was packed. At a little after 11 pm, the Rebirth Brass Band went on stage. Unfortunately, the acoustics at Maple Leaf are not very good. From the back room, we could barely hear anything. The speakers playing music earlier were somehow louder than live music fifty feet away from us. We got up and ventured into the main room. However, the sound was still pretty quiet there too. We watched for a while, but the show wasn't really that great from the back of the main room. It was hot and crowded and there wasn't really any room to dance around. To be honest, the Austin performance was way more fun. My recommendation is that you should either get to Maple Leaf really early and stake out a spot in front (not that you'd have any room to dance) or you should just see Rebirth Brass Band somewhere else. It's not like they did anything at this show that they don't do at other shows. While I'd definitely recommend Maple Leaf as a cool bar to drink at, I think the Tuesday show experience is a bit over-hyped. read more

I do not make it to this fantastic music hot spot nearly enough. That's a real crime considering that I have never had a bad time here. Most of the time there is a cover because there is an awesome band playing, but this is one of the few places where I actually don't mind paying a cover. The drinks are pretty cheap and the crowd is so fun. When I was in here there was a band playing that was a nice mix of all kinds of characters. This place makes no sense as a venue to watch bands. It's just a long narrow room with a two foot stage. So if you are a few rows back you can't see anything. Many great artists play this room so if you're in the NBA I recommend checking it out but if you're in an army tank crew or play a dwarf on Game of Thrones maybe not so much. read more

This place has history out the wazoo and is always a cant-go-wrong option for great music. Personally, I'm a HUGE James Booker fan, and back in the day, this bar was THE SPOT to see Booker play. For that reason alone, any true music fan needs to make a pilgrimage here. There are a few "cons" to the Maple Leaf: - not a good spot for club hopping. There's only a smattering of other bars in the immediate vicinity and none have live music (exception being the nearby wine bar, but the bands they feature lean more toward background music) - bands start fairly late, so plan on a late night (not necessarily a con, but if you're trying tot catch Rebirth on a Tues night, well, plan on being really tired at work the next day...) - sound quality is good for rock/jazz/blues acts, but when a brass band is in there, prepare to have your eardrums blown out. The shape of the stage area just kind of holds all that noise and amplifies it till it feels like your ears are about to begin bleeding. On the "pro" side, well there are many - Great bands. Always. - Good selection of booze - Nice backyard patio and quieter back room to catch your breath and get some fresh air - History, tradition, the legacy of great music continuing on in NOLA - Far from the crowds and chaos of Frenchmen Street; which can be nice! Recommendations: - A late dinner at Jaques-Imos before the set starts - EAR PLUGS for the brass bands. You'll still be able to enjoy the music, but you'll save your hearing - Dance your ass off (not like you have a choice!) read more

Check another one off my bucket list, I finally saw Rebirth at the Maple Leaf! Well, sort of. We sat in the back room, so we could actually sit, thinking that the view from the benches along the wall in the front room would probably have no view whatsoever. But by standing on the front rung of my barstool, I could actually see these amazing musicians. The sound level back there was really not as loud as I expected, and the only downer to the evening was a male hen party that materialized right in front of us, five guys who were so deep into conversation, that I couldn't believe they paid the $20 cover to stand there and talk about baseball. But it was still a great experience. Drinks are strong and reasonably priced, and the bartender kept up with the growing crowd well. The patio out back looked pretty chill, but we were afraid to give up our seats to check it out. The heat from the packed-in crowd up front is legendary, but the back room stayed comfortable. So if you don't mind a partial view of what's going on up on stage, the back's the place to be. read more

I effing love this place. Visiting from Los Angeles, my love and I took the streetcar from our hotel on St Charles, cool drizzly evening. Got intel that the Rebirth Jazz Band would be there so off we go. Arrived at 930 for the 11pm show. Able to get a seat at the bar and our bartender Reagan or Regan I don't recall how she spelled her name was a blast. Wonderful conversation with her and the clientele was so cool. The drinks are priced fairly and the good times just kept flowing. Small tho, limited seating but mainly to listen to music with a few drinks and great people. I've noticed all these signs around NOLA that state "be nice or leave" well I think management at Maple Leaf should take heed to that advice and examine the manners of their bartender, Reagan. NOT a polite person. When I ordered a drink and she made me the wrong one, she refused to substitute it. What happened to the customer is always right? Lots of yelpers have given this place generous stars and I'm disappointed I didn't have the opportunity to notice the music, ambiance or whatever else because of this disrespectful bartender. Some years ago, young Sister Hand Grenade made her way up here on the streetcar to meet with some pals to go see a show, but she only remembers glimpses of scenes from that night. Vague, vague... Tsk, tsk... This recent stint at Maple Leaf started off based upon their symbiotic relationship with Jacques Imo's, as in, "Let's go get some drinks as we wait for our table at Jacques-Imo's." The space seemed larger than I recalled, what without all the mobs of boogie-downing and perspiring peoples. In my foggy memory it was all brass band and packed in like a sardine can. We were too early for live music at that point, of course, but did seize upon the jukebox which was full of some rare ol beauties, including selections from the king of the Hammond B3 organ. Not something I see all the time, in jukeboxes of the land... That's a good jukebox full of funk and jazz and rock and New Orleans artists ya got there, Maple Leaf. Not surprising as this is a place known for music and more music. Our bartender was friendly and quick with the drinks. Got very comfortable there at the rail. We came back after grubbin to shake a tail feather into the night. Totally fun. My personal slogan of our time at Maple Leaf this trip is, "Maple Leaf: Now with added memory." read more

If you haven't been to Maple Leaf bar on a Monday or Tuesday night, you haven't been to New Orleans. This uptown bar is rockin' every night of the week, especially Mondays (Papa Grows Funk) and Tuesdays (Rebirth Brass Band) because two of New Orleans' best bands have standing gigs there those nights. It's rare that I'm willing to pay a cover to go anywhere, but Maple Leaf is more than worth it. You know the music is going to be awesome, you know you're going to be there for hours and hours, and you're allowed to leave and come back after you've paid the cover. A great night out is dinner at Jacques-i-mo's next door then Maple Leaf to burn off the calories afterward. Just be prepared to stay out late. Usually the bands don't even start until 10 p.m. or later, but Maple Leaf is a chill place to hang out and have a drink while you're waiting for your table at Jacques-i-mo's. (Better than sitting in the very crowded bar area at Jacques-i-mo's!) There's a secret courtyard all the way in the back of Maple Leaf, which I had no idea existed for years and years. There's also a back bar (that I've never seen open), and a pool table if you're waiting for the music to start. Often, there's an artist who paints the band, live, while they're playing. He's almost as fun to watch as the band itself. read more
