We recently moved to Reno from Carson. My husband had a dental emergency. Our Carson dentist was unavailable so we asked who he recommended - Dr Tjoa. The staff fit him in right away and got him comfortable then scheduled root canal / crown. My husband is an engineer/inventor/machinist/pilot. He's almost never impressed, let alone when in pain and getting a root canal, lol! Every appointment he came home singing the praises about the staff, the facility and was especially impressed by the technology and equipment they use. Very cutting edge, I guess. Precision crowns made on the spot. (Most send them out and you have to come back in a couple weeks for an install). Then my 17 year old daughter went for exam and cleaning. She came home super impressed and talking about it (teenagers usually don't talk about this stuff). My turn. Beautiful office, very tastefully done with high end finishes. I'm used to bland 1990s Doctor/dentist offices. Tall dark molding, extensive tile, huge magazine assortment and coffee station. Not that I needed those things - they got me right in at my appointment time. 25 minutes & maybe 20 xrays/photos of my mouth. Not fun but super thorough! Exam: Doctor talked about some of my past dental work but no problems now. He said I was boring. I have no doubt if I needed something, I'd be in good hands. Funny, honest (talked me out of the Zoom) and good bedside manor. Cleaning: I love getting my teeth cleaned! I'd do it once a month if my insurance wanted to pay :) Not a huge fan of the new ultrasonic cleanings. I was raised on a good scaling cleaning so in recent years I've been disappointed. Michelle did both!!! Ultrasonic then a full scaling then floss and polish. She did a great job and helped me fine tune my (already thorough) home hygiene routine (don't forget to rub the floss on the outside of the molars). One of the best cleanings I've ever had - can't wait till next time! Side note: there is some good coaching going on here. Everyone was very personable and talked to me about my daughter and husband, like they remember everyone's dental history. Impressive in such a fast paced world we live in. As a newcomer to Reno, I checked Yelp for well-reviewed dentists, and then called around to see who could get our family in for appointments soonest. My husband saw Dr. Tjoa, liked the care he got, and recommended I see him as well. As far dental care goes, I have no complaints about the practice. However, as my routine dental exam went on, I become more and more uncomfortable with the things Dr. Tjoa was saying to me: he described my teeth as "sexy" and "voluptuous," told me "you're basically genetically perfect, as far as your mouth anatomy goes," said odd things about my husband "he must not stress you out much, because it doesn't look like you grind your teeth," and asked me if I fell in love with my husband's sexy foreign accent, and finally, weirdest of all, when looking under my tongue, said, "you're a bit tongue-tied, if you want to be a better kisser, I could cut that little membrane for you." Notably, he didn't make of these sorts of comments to my husband. I was uncomfortable enough that, had I not been laying down with a tray of tools over my chest, I might have left. I determined immediately that my family will not be seeing this dentist again. read more

I had been going to this place for a long time that finally decided enough is enough. I went in complaining about a tooth that was bothering me and Tjoa the dentist suggested a root canal. I said why its already bad can you just pull it coz it was getting bad with a little absess. Long story short he pulled the wrong one coz when I was about to go home I notice it still hurts that when I determine they pulled the wrong tooth. I have been a patient of Dr Tjoa for the past ten years and he is the best dentist I have ever been to. He is the kindest, sweetest man and more importantly he is an excellent dentist. He always presents me with choices from the Rolls Royce down to the lowly Kia in terms of treatment plans. He is gentle and works quickly. The whole staff are always welcoming and professional. And his offices is very beautiful and comfortable. He has all the latest technology as well. I can't say enough good things about this practice. Gave you guys a call 2 days ago, I don't know who picked up but she asked for my information and I gave her my name phone number and email address. I tried to set up an appointment and I'm free this whole week and the person that picked up the phone said that they will give me a call back in a few because the person that sets the appointment is currently talking to some one at the moment. I waited two days, no call back. I called today to try to set up an appointment and now they can't get me till next week. Terrible communication. Waste of my time. read more

I went in for my new patient exam yesterday and from the moment I walked in to the moment I left, I had a great experience. The receptionist, Katherine is very nice and helpful. "She greeted me by saying oh wow Leilani you're already here, I didn't even notice the time!" I liked that she said that because it made me feel comfortable like i've been there a million times already. There was an issue with my insurance and she called around and got it figured out. Most receptionist wouldn't of cared. Maha (I don't know if that's how you spell her name) was so great! She was so nice and knew a lot about what she was doing. While taking the X-rays she explained what I was going to feel and see, while maintaining a casual conversation. Dr. Tjoa is great! He has an awesome personality to me and makes jokes that make you laugh, they aren't cheesy! I could see how someone lady like Sheila P. on here would give him 1 star. She has no sense of humor obviously. Overall, great experience and i'm glad that I found a dentist that i'll look forward to go to. read more

I've been seeing Dr. Tjoa for about three and a half years. Until recently I've just been there for my biannual cleaning. I've seen two of his hygienists; they're both very nice and seem quite competent. My teeth are always sparkly clean when they're finished. I have a bunch of silver fillings on my back teeth that are at least 20 years old and a bad habit of chewing ice. Needless to say, I have a bunch of broken silver fillings. Dr. Tjoa gave me multiple options to replace them. Like most people, I'm not a big fan of getting dental work done so I was looking for the most conservative option that would give me another 20 years. I can't guarantee that I'm going to stop chewing ice or wear my night guard on a consistent basis. So we decided on gold onlays. The actual procedure wasn't too bad. The shot wasn't a lot of fun but I barely noticed it and Dr. Tjoa won't touch your teeth until you're completely numb. His assistant is nice and seems very conscientious of what was going on in my mouth, aka no lip pinching with the spit sucker and I never felt like I was drowning. After the onlays were put in and the numbness wore off, one of them felt a little high. I was able to get in the next day and after a few seconds of adjusting it felt good as new. They're always very accommodating and seem to run on time. I've never had to wait more than a few minutes in his waiting room. read more

Nice clean state of the art office from what I can tell. Excellent staff. Dr. Tjoa is cool and down to earth. He did my root canal with success and with ZERO pain. He told me he was going to make me happy and he was right. I told him I was homesick from WI and I missed our flowers and parks. He said the parks here in the West make Wisconsin parks look pathetic. I refused to believe this so he pulled the parks up on the computer screen and showed me a few so this summer I went to visit these National Parks and he was right! Great experience considering it was a root canal and great referral to awesome Parks. read more

Just an utterly amazing dentist; a true virtuoso. My mouth was a veritable house of horrors when he took me on early last year, and the work he has done has been nothing short of transformative. Dr. Tjoa is remarkably efficient, and all of my procedures (well over a dozen), have been painless. They've taken me in on short notice, are always good about reminders and rescheduling, and are incredibly courteous. Most of all, I appreciate the care Dr. Tjoa puts into his craft, and the care his whole office shares for their patients. This guy has problems. While he was working on my teeth he mad a comment that 'all women should suffer, because they make men suffer." Unfortunately, I could not answer due to the fact that he was performing a root canal in my mouth, which, as I found out a few years later was never completed. Not only this tooth, but a few others with the same procedure also known as 'endodontic treatment (root canal). A dentist who a few years later took care of that very same tooth, explained to me that all my root canals were only performed half way rather than completely. This had left the tooth nerve still active to bother me later on, and to cause me to undergo more painful treatments as well as more money out of pocket, and distress. Still to this day, I do not know why he did this, and not only on one tooth but three of them. Root canals are not even one of the most complicated dental procedures for a competent dentist. I want to mention that before seeing him, I had contacted a referral service to find a dentist in Reno being that I was new to town. I was highly recommended him, therefore, I felt safe and I put a lot of trust in him. Now, I have to deal with the consequences for the rest of the screwed up work he did or . . . . did not do! If you do see him just make sure you let him know you want to pay for full root canal not half! It will save you lot of pain later on! read more

I have been going to Dr Tjoa for about 12yrs now. Him and his staff are absolutely amazing! Everyone is super friendly! My kids really enjoy their visits with them as well. Its nice to know you can bring your kids to see the dentist without the kids throwing a fit. Dr Tjoa is great with them. He does such great work that I have turned my entire family onto him. He is the best!!! I have been having health issues and my teeth have gotten... bad to say the lest. I recently;y went inn for xrays and exam, the pictures were done right in front of me. He came in and went over every xray, picture and tooth. Then I was given a print out of everything I needed done with a price. Everyone was so nice, no pressure. I guess I am like Sheila P. and also have "no sense of humor." I have seen Dr. Tjoa multiple times, and he makes me uncomfortable. For some reason I continued to go until my last visit, which pushed me over the edge. In one visit, Dr. Tjoa made comments about my appearance and outfit ("Ooh, did you wear that for me?" - direct quote) and talked to the dental hygienist about strip clubs (who by the way appeared very uncomfortable as well). The icing on the cake was when I mentioned that I did not want to get a shot in the gums because it makes me nauseous. Dr. Tjoa said, "Oh, you're just nauseous because you're pregnant." I'm not pregnant, by the way, and I sort of laughed. He then followed that up with, "Oh if you were, would you kill yourself?" I was speechless. In past visits, he has touched both of my knees while I was reclining on the dental chair and also made comments about my "sexy teeth" and whether I am a good wife or not. I have found a new dentist and I will not be going back. read more

I like the fact that no one is alarmist or tries to up-sell me any goods or services and Dr. Tjoa has kept my teeth in great shape, and offers up an entertaining sense of humor. They really take the time to get to know you and your history which helps a lot. I've only been seeing Dr. Tjoa for a short time but he is without a doubt the best dentist I have ever been to (and I have seen plenty of dentists). I had to have a crown replaced and they did the whole thing in one visit, it was pretty amazing. I have a number of crowns and this one is by far the best looking, most natural looking crown that I have ever had. One thing I love is that he does not try to sell you on work that you don't need! I have dental insurance and it seems like a lot of dentists will 'find' work to do right up the max that your insurance will cover, but not Dr. Tjoa. His entire staff is great, Lynne his assistant is fantastic and the hygienist Kathleen is top notch. Dr. Tjoa and his staff treat you like you are an old friend. There was a little delay in finishing my crown so while I was waiting the staff offered to share their lunch with me- when is that last time your dental office did that? read more

5 Stars for a dentist? YES! I have been a patient of Dr. Tjoa's for many years now and he is such a wonderful dentist. I recently moved to the Bay Area (which is why I am now Yelping), and had to find another dentist. My experience at this other dentist made me realize that I really should write a review for Dr. Tjoa. Dr. Tjoa is very gentle, and completely honest with his patients. He gives you options rather than telling you what needs to be done. When getting a filling done, he tells you step by step what they are doing and what it will feel like. And all of his hygienists are very good and friendly. There is no question that Dr. Tjoa is the best dentist in Reno, and probably in the country too! read more

Dr tjoa has been my dentist for 19years. Yesterday I got a new crown in one visit, 2 hours! Wonderful!!!

When I set out to go to the dentist i initially thought any dentist would do. I simply would go and and get what I needed to be done and that would be it. Boy was I wrong, I picked one out from the web and experienced the worse case of service I have experienced in a long time. I learned my lesson fast, so I researched and asked around to see what I could come up with. Quite a few times I heard the name Dr. Tjoa, so I decided to make a appointment and give it a shot. Upon my arrival I was very impressed the facility is very new and well cleaned. As I approached the front desk I was thinking ok how are the people here for that's what counts. The woman at the front desk greeted me with a smile and said " You must be Esteban?" From there she introduced herself to me and made me feel at home. Since then I have gone in for work and routine cleanings. I can honestly say I have made some new friends. From the staff to Dr. Tjoa they work as a team to make the experience as pleasant as possible. If you think like I thought and think anybody will do, do not make the same mistake. I really love this place because I was in town from Portland Oregon and they were able to see me for an emergency for a broken tooth. Dr Tjoa did a large filling instead of doing a crown in which I could not afford. When times are tough and I have no extra cash dr. Tjoa was willing to help me out. My rating does not in any way reflect the dental hygienists nor Dr.Tjoa's work. I have been a patient here since 2015, I have no qualms about going to the dentist and the experience with the trained dental hygienists has been amazing. Dr. Tjoa is a little off when it comes to his humor but for me I can live with a off put joke because he does have a gentle hand and has listened to my requests as a patient. I will be finding another dentist though. I cannot stand coming in for my appointments or calling and dealing with the office "staff" Lynn. Which for this office Lynn seems to be the only one there to deal with. I usually can deal with her attitude and rude and undermined comments but I am done. I had called made an appointment to get two fillings in November 2017 (before Christmas) I wanted to make sure what I would be paying out of pocket, she gave me the amount of what my insurance wouldn't cover and said that would be it. The day before the office called to confirm my appointment ( this was not Lynn), and I asked again what the amount was and what I would need at the time of the appointment (did they want it all in full or do they usually bill my insurance and then send me a statement) this lady gave me the same amount as Lynn did before and said they will bill my insurance and then send me the remaining statement. I go in on my scheduled appointment have my fillings done. Checking out Lynn asks for the full amount plus now a $50 dollar copay? I asked her about the what I was told just yesterday and when did I need to pay a copay? My insurance plan did not have one for this service (This is also not my first filling, but first copay?) I was confused. Lynn then made a comment, "well you only have this insurance" to which I took as, you have crappy insurance. I agreed to pay the co payment and told her to bill me the rest. I was pissed and needed to call my insurance to figure it out if there had been changes to my plan. Spoke with my insurance the next day, gave them the doctors information and what I had done, the insurance lady said that I did NOT need a copay and that she would wait till they submitted my bill to do anything further. I then called Lynn back she said she would credit the $50 towards my balance. The statement I received is for the amount quoted never did she credit the $50. No where in any statement does it show I paid a $50 dollar copay, except on my debit card statement and thank god for that. Ugh I just ended up paying and she was still rude. So new patients be ware watch and know what you are paying for. read more

I was about to lose my faith in the entire dental industry until I found Dr. Tjoa and his wonderful team, here in Reno, NV. I've been a patient of Dr. Tjoa for 2 years now (with all of my dental issues) and they have been just magnificent! They are caring, honest, reasonable, and most importantly, very genuine and always go out of their way to accommodate patients and their needs. They are also great with kids and are successfully able to handle my super-anxious 8 (now) year-old. I HAVE to mention that there is no match to Dr. Tjoa's perfection and precise work, which (I learned from his work) is crucial for the work to benefit patients' health for years!
