Came in with my usual make-up on -- she gave me suggestions, took it all off, and redid me using my products and it looked fantastic! I found her on Youtube as a guest on my favorite make-up lady's channel and learned that she lives in Austin and will soon have her own Youtube channel. She's worked for all the big name cosmetics lines and knows her stuff -- you can tell because she looks so lovely. I don't want to wash my face tonite! I too, followed Lisa from Orbit up to her new digs at Mantis. This was my first appt. with her since the big move and she's just as awesome. :) The salon is *very* cute. I'm partial to businesses in old homes and Mantis does it right. Very sleek, very pretty. Love the decor in the fireplace. I went in for highlights and cut at 5:30 (because yes, she does late hours a few nights a week). We did blonde highlights and on a whim, I asked her about bangs. She recommended piece-y bangs as opposed to blunt, thick ones. So we went for it. And now I have awesome bangs that I don't hate. Win! She listens, she cares, she does what you ask for and somehow manages to make me look amazing when I say 'eh, just do whatever'. Prices are right on target with Orbit. I couldn't be happier. Very nice little salon with friendly and experienced staff. Great location for me too. Go see Greggory Reveles for awesome men's cuts, ladies and coloring. Gregg always cuts and styles my hair perfectly with little to no direction or fuss. He asks how I style it and what products I use and works with it and makes great recommendations! Now that I've moved from Austin, well I go see him when I'm in town!! He is extremely funny and personable and I just feel great and relaxed for the whole day after visiting Gregg! Kate saved my wedding day photos by working me in at the last minute after my regular colorist moved to Dallas without letting me know she wouldn't be able to do my hair for my wedding. She is so friendly and knowledgeable about not only hair products but nutrition and biology as well. The quality of the color she uses is fantastic, she was able to get my hair perfectly color matched, and maybe even a little better. Super friendly, and for 70$ for all over color she is the highest quality for the price I've seen in all of Austin. Kate has been doing my hair since August, and I have been very pleased with the work she does. Getting my hair right is very important to me as I have a unique hairstyle. Not only does she get my hair the way I want, she is genuinely nice and hospitable. Most of the salons downtown are very impersonal, overpriced, and don't do a good job for the money you are paying. This is quite the opposite, and the salon is centrally located so you could get their from north or south fairly easily. David Moore is one of the best hairdressers in Austin. Known for his color, but his background as a Sassoon trained haircutter is underlooked. David also is great with finishing, bridal work. He's been my go-to for along time. He is super up on all of the trends, but knows how to cut and color for your facial and head shape. I love Chris. To bits. He is everything I want in a stylist. And so is the salon. The shampoo chairs are like no other. It's like your head is floating and not crammed. His head massages are ah-mazin'! HIs cuts are the best because they actually grow out into a style. I never feel rushed to get back to his shop to have a trim. He's that good. Getting a haircut in Austin used to be a traumatizing experience. I had been almost everywhere, I thought, and they always ended up turning out like crap. Chris and Mantis has cured me of my haircut anxiety. He's incredibly friendly and always has good ideas for what to do with my hair. I had my first appointment with Chris yesterday for a cut and color. He was awesome! I haven't colored my hair in 10 years so I was really concerned about getting it right and keeping my hair healthy. He went through all of the options with me and we came up with a plan that matched what I was looking for. As mentioned in a previous post, he gives a great head massage, and the shampoo chair is amazing - you are basically laying down in a recliner, so your neck isn't jammed into the sink. Very cool. When it came to the cut, every snip was deliberate and precise. I spent about 2.5 hours in the chair but he was so easy to talk with the time just flew by. Go see him! read more

I had an emergency repair to do from a crooked haircut I got somewhere else the day before, and pretty much wept over as I had a party to go to the next evening. Besides the party hell in mere hours, it was still depressing that I would just have to wear it until it grew out - which looked as if it would take some time. I couldn't take it anymore (after just a day!) so I started to call around for help. I searched Yelp, called Mantis due to the rave reviews about Lisa, but she was busy. Next, I called Katie Hicks at the same salon. (They each use their private lines.) Katie was ON HER WAY HOME when she answered her phone and she CAME BACK to the Salon to help me out. She was very nice, very personable and very helpful. She explained what she could do before she did it and rested my mind that it was repairable. She had to go shorter to fix the bad (really bad) bangs and uneven sideburns, but even though I don't like my bangs short, she managed to make them cute and hardly show the chunk that was cut out by the stylist at another salon. The cut plus a few highlights took the angst out of my pre-party hair fright. Katie actually said she LIKES fixing a haircut that someone else messes up. And, she's great at it. Mantis is a great little salon, a few of the stylist put the place together themselves so have a vested interest in being top notch. It is a new shop in my neighborhood and I hope to see it succeed.
