Avocado Cucumber Maki
Steve A.

Checked out this classic looking sushi place in Glenview. It could look like some 1970s place to be honest. Manooben is all about old school kinds of sushi. Forget about the fancy sauce and toppings that cover the fusion crap. The prices are pretty affordable and you get some good portions. A sushi place like this is becoming increasingly rare as it's become more about the atmosphere. It seems to be less about the actual sushi. The sushi here is the main thing though. It's about $6 for a roll. We got a couple of the Avocado Cucumber Maki because this was the one that was vegetarian. Pretty simple but it tasted fresh. The service by the lady who may have also been the owner was also friendly and it wasn't a long wait to get sushi. Got some pretty good sushi, and we could come back here again. It's better than it looks. The menu is pretty simple, and there's also ramen and other noodles but of course sushi is the main thing.

The Korean auntie who served me was so kind and friendly. After paying bill I asked if she sold sprite and she said she was out. She insisted that I take a coke on the house and I said no I will pay. She refused my money and handed me the soft drink. I left the money on the table and added it to the tip I left. Great food, great service, small business that cares about their clients. Quality and service A+.

Wonderful food, service and environment. The place is really cozy and comfortable with cute decorations. The woman who served our food was friendly and kind. I got the beef rice dish in the stone bowl and my sister got a bento box. Both of us were happy with the flavors and it was very fresh. 10/10 will be back soon!

Did y'all know manooben stands for maki/noodle/bento? When I found out I was like ooohhh DUH lol I used to come here when I was in hs, literally 20 years ago, I'm so happy to find out it's still open bc it was great 2 decades ago and is still great now. It's tucked away in the back corner of a strip mall. But parking is never an issue bc they have a large lot. We stopped by for a quick lunch one weekday. The service is so nice and quick. They have excellent lunch specials, as well as dinner specials. The pricing really seems like precovid/normal pricing. This spot hasn't been hit w inflation, which is lovely. I remember their udon noodz always being so good, and it hasn't changed one bit! I got the manooben bento lunch special. The udon noodle soup was so good. The salmon teriyaki was so good as well. I always loooooved the potato salad and still do! Solid nigiri. I will def keep coming back to this lovely Korean mom n pop restaurant.

Hand rolls

This spot is a hidden gem. I ordered the hand roll bento box which was two giant hand rolls and a half portion of udon soup. It was the perfect amount and affordable at $18. The fish was so fresh and the hand roll was delicious. The udon noodles are made in house, which you can totally feel when you eat them. Chewy, perfect consistency and fresh. The broth was amazing. Only 4 not 5 stars because their crab rolls are imitation but the fish is so fresh, honestly, who cares.

You know that moment in Ratatouille when Anton Ego took a bite and it transported him to a time in his childhood? I had the same nostalgic ratatouille bite when I ate the nabeyaki udon here. I don't know if they make the noodles in house but just the way the noodles and its texture felt was comforting and took me back to a different time and place that seemed familiar. Maybe it was the setting of the restaurant which made me feel like I was at a family members home and having their home cooked meals but that's the vibe that you get at this place. It's nothing fancy or pretentious; just good homemade comfort food. They have an extensive menu composed of bento boxes and sets so you can't really go wrong with what you choose. If you're looking for some good Japanese comfort food, definitely try this spot out!

This is a really nice restaurant. The ambiance is great, the ceramics are all very nice. The sushi was delicious.

Manooben is a restaurant that offers healthy and delicious food in a casual setting. Prices are very reasonable and the portion sizes are generous. Presentation is reasonable, neat and varied but not the most elaborate. The restaurant itself is decorated with a myriad of food, flower, and asian items. Service is friendly and reasonably quick. Here are my thoughts on the different items I tried: Bento boxes: Great deal. You can try a variety of items from udon to rolls to tempura to salads all at a reasonable price. If you're not familiar with all the available dishes, this is a good place to start. Tonkatsu: Nicely tenderized with a slightly crisp batter. The tonkatsu dipping sauce has a good sweetness and smokiness to it. This is as good as other tonkatsu preparations by other restaurants in the area. Beef teriyaki don: A nice healthier preparation, although the vegetables might overpower the beef in this dish. But the beef is tender and marinated nicely while the sear on the onions produces a sweet and savory flavor to help tie the carrots and broccoli together. Sake don: Nice thick slices of salmon sit on top of fluffy, lightly vinegared rice. Simple and satisfying though elements such as sesame seeds for crunch and seaweed salad for saltiness could've improved it. Salmon teriyaki: An alright preparation, a bit overcooked for me but still enjoyable. The vegetables on top added a nice touch. Miso soup: A bit unusual of a preparation, almost as if there's a little fish or other type of seafood in the broth. This added a pleasant savoriness. Udon: Noodles were nice and chewy while the broth had a nice hint of soy and seaweed in it. Potato salad: A bit plain -- soft and slightly gritty but it goes well with the saltier elements. Tempura: A bit on the soft side for the batter, but you get a generous portion of it in the bento box and the ingredients are fresh. Seaweed salad: Standard flavor you'll find in any restaurant. California roll: One of the better versions I've had. The rice was nice and soft, though a little cold. The roll was packed fairly tight with the creamy avocado and crisp cucumber tempering down the saltiness of the fish roe. Spicy tuna roll: Not really spicy, but a nice simple take on the roll with fresh vegetables. Overall, this is a place I could see myself visiting often. With the assortment of menu choices, I can get many different flavors at a reasonable price for Japanese or Korean food. The depth of flavors and flavor combinations may be simple, but it helps to highly the food quality and is healthier than drenching food in sauce. Textures could be a bit more pronounced, but many items on the menu are supposed to be soft or smooth. But still, the food is satisfying and filling -- and the bento boxes are a wonderful deal.

This Noodles and Company is located directly across the street from Landmark at the Glen theatres…read more Whenever we walked out from the theatres looking for an eatery to eat in, it was hard for us not to see N&C immediately, therefore, we have dined in there many times over the years. The quality and quantity of the food were very satisfactory back then. We were happy (and a bit surprised) that it had survived the pandemic, and was doing very well, judging from the evening that we dined in there. This N&C is smallish, during a sunny late summer evening, it was quite hot inside the eatery. The booths were pretty tight, even for petite people like me, and the tables and chairs could be a bit cleaner. We placed the order at the front desk. It took me repeating the whole order at least twice before the cashier understood what we were ordering. We had 3 bowls of noodles, each with slightly different choices. We ordered two bowls of Rigatoni Rosa, one with Parmesan Chicken and feta cheese, the other one had Grilled Chicken and no cheese. They ran out of rigatoni noodles and substituted them with cavatappi noodles. Then, they ran out of cavatappi noodles after two bowls, I opted for a bowl of Japanese Pan Noodles with Korean Meatballs on the side instead. A staff brought the orders to our table (we had a number). Portions seem to be on the small side. They skimped on broccoli on my bowl, and skimped on chicken on the other two bowls. The food was OK. I felt that the noodles from the Deerfield N&C seemed to be more flavorful with bigger portions. However, for a quick and easy fast-food dinner, this was OK.

Ordering was quick. Order took a bit. The venue is pretty clean, but after a few customers some…read morethings on the floor, so, normal. The food: Chicken noodle soup 3 stars. Garlic cream Tortellini 4 stars. Chicken Caesar salad 3 stars.

Ordering was a breeze and the guys were always open to a conversation or giving suggestions. The restaurant was clean and the meal was always tasty. Just a note but the further away you move from any major city the fewer and harder it is to find great Asian food. The suburb is lucky to have them. The pandemic brought new staffing. Some were pleasant with customers though one lady, a supervisor had the wrong ideas of what customer service and proper etiquette is. Just the basics of my final visit. I took my family for lunch. We ordered lunch specials and a couple extra must-try plates. Two specials hit the table and the third was left waiting for her meal. Unbeknownst to us in the moment, her food was handed to a single patron there for his lunch. The place was filling up with a lunch rush but not so many that had complicated orders. Many were ordering similar lunch specials. Kung pao lunch special was popular. When her order finally arrived the supervisor realized she had given the wrong plate to the customer sitting some tables behind us. Mind you ten minutes had already passed. She quickly went over to him and asked what he had ordered. She then took the plate he was eating from and handed him the fresh plate. He was still holding a half eaten egg roll in his hand. Then she brought the quarter eaten plate and placed it in front of my mother. Before she could leave I stopped her and asked her what she was doing. She simply stated that was her lunch order. I told her she handed my mother someone else's food that they were eating and I watched the whole thing. Why didn't you take that to the back and make a completely new plate of food?! I paid the bill and got the F**k out. That's gross. Also, you gave the other patron new food but cannot do the same for our table?? This place is dead to me. If she could do that, it beckons the question of what else is happening behind the scenes.

***Update: As you can see, the owner has decided to reply unprofessionally to my review, rather…read morethan reaching out to solve the issue. I'll let his response to my concerns speak for itself. My family has been coming to this restaurant for years, which makes this experience not just disappointing, but very upsetting. We placed a pickup order totaling over $100. When I arrived, I was told our order had been given to another customer. Instead of immediately apologizing and remaking the food, the front desk employee spent several minutes trying to find the order, then called the customer who took it and asked him to come back with the food so it could be given to me. This is an obvious food safety issue. Once food leaves a restaurant, it should never be redistributed. When I calmly said I was not comfortable taking food that had already gone to someone else's home, the employee argued with me extensively, insisting it hadn't been touched. I had to repeatedly ask for the food to be remade. When the other customer returned, the employee made a pointed comment that the food would be thrown away "because we have to remake it," while looking directly at me. This felt accusatory, uncomfortable, and inappropriate, especially since the mistake was not mine. After waiting over 40 additional minutes, I was still charged the full amount. When I politely asked whether there would be any consideration for the delay, I was told, "No, we already lost money on you." Being spoken to that way after showing patience and understanding was shocking and deeply unprofessional. Unfortunately, the situation did not end there. When we later called, the same employee refused to provide a manager or owner's contact information, and refused to let us speak with a manager. We asked the employee for her name and she replied "What's YOUR name and what's your problem?" That comment alone reflects a serious lack of professionalism. We emailed management twice to address what happened and have received no response. Mistakes happen, but what is unacceptable is arguing with customers about food safety, making them feel blamed for expecting safe food, speaking to them disrespectfully, and then ignoring follow-up. Management should take this feedback seriously, because this experience reflects poorly on their business. We are very sad to no longer be customers of PNS after many years of enjoying their food.

The place has options of seating - inside and outside, ranging from metal chairs to comfortable upholstered benches. We then got the Kung Pao with mushrooms and it was incredible - the flavors, the choice of vegetables, the sauce - all of it!
