The restaurant itself was clean, calm, and welcoming, and the food coming out of the kitchen looked really good. They do offer gluten-free buns, which was exciting to see at first. When I asked about the meats though, the person at the counter let me know that their meat options aren't gluten-free. Since I have Celiac disease, that meant I wasn't able to order anything. I did appreciate how straightforward and accommodating the staff were about it. They answered my questions without hesitation, which is always helpful when navigating gluten-free dining. Even though I couldn't eat there, the place looked well run and the atmosphere was nice. I'd still recommend it if gluten isn't a concern.

Another case of oversized matzoh balls and a tasty broth. They have exceptional meats and a terrific cole slaw. Portions are usually on the large side. However, today's sandwich was a bit skimpy, by comparison. This is also dessert central. Plenty of danish, cookies and 7-layer cake. Prices are actually reasonable for the product received. 10/25

My best friend and I used to ride our bikes here to grab a corned beef on a Kaiser roll. Well, one thing I can say. I can no longer just recycle cans to pay for my sandwich. The prices have definitely increased, but I guess that's par for the course. I also didn't get a sandwich once I saw they had the egg rolls on the menu. Glad I did. While they weren't anything to necessarily write home about, they went very well with my salad for lunch. They were crunchy and the corned beef inside was quite tender, however the meat lacked flavor and I didn't care for it being served with sauce. Would love a bold mustard type sauce. Will ask if that's available next time. Gonna have to go back for the sandwich. Just to see if it brings me back to my teenage years. Service was quick and professional. No complaints.

Famous from the borscht belt performances. I really really enjoyed my meal of matzo ball soup in which the broth was elegantly poured into a large bowl with a huge matzo ball and some poached carrots. The broth was flavorful. I opted for a sandwich, after pouring over the menu on line and at the restaurant I really, really, needed pastrami. Nothing says deli with a nice bowl of pickles and some bread. Half sours and whole dill pickles. So I ordered the Russian Reuben. They offer two sizes the regular or the extra cut (probably another ounce or two) I about cannot have a pastrami without my Dr. Browns Cream soda... IYKYK... I finally made it on a free morning, just in time for an early lunch. On the day of my visit, it was cold and wet, so outdoor dining was out of the question. Just inside is a large deli counter with items available for take-out. Beyond that was a large and stylish dining room, where diners enjoyed the last of their breakfasts. I was a smidge earlier than everyone else for lunch; the dining room filled up soon afterwards. I loved the huge menu - there were so many options for soups, salads (Maurice, Greek, and Cobb, to name a few), sandwiches (Reuben's, triple deckers, and even vegetarian), burgers and hot dogs, breakfasts (omelettes, waffles, and French toast), and deli classics. I opted for the Victor Special, extra cut, which included larger portions of both corned beef and pastrami, coleslaw, Swiss cheese, and Russian dressing. The thinly-sliced meat was indeed piled high at the center. For my side, I had wanted the onion rings, but they were already sold out! Instead, I went with the hash browns; they were crispy with a mashed potato-like interior. In retrospect, I should have tried some of the foods I've enjoyed from my hometown: knishes, blintzes, latkes; I'm now dreaming of meals I've had in my past. Service was fine at first, but my server got busy elsewhere, and her coworkers pitched in.

We also got the special spices etc. I do prefer a more of an Italian sandwich on a hard roll, so I'm not sure the soft onion roll is for me. If you like a cold sandwich un-toasted and generally basic with a bit of a twist, you will love this! My husband and I enjoyed the sandwich (split it, and they put mayo on half at my request). It's a charming spot, quality food and I'm glad we tried it. Skip the spicy potato salad. It was bland, sadly.

They have an extensive menu to include vegetarian options which was nice to see. They also have many local brands to include chips, sodas, and other small local business products (caramelized nuts, baked goods, etc.)! On the topic of local businesses, they also had a board which allowed local owners to post business cards and event alerts, fantastic for drawing the community together. Now, I ordered a Reuben as a lover of corned beef and sauerkraut. It was delicious and sizeable, a fair portion size for the money as well. The chips were also delicious having gone for the salt, pepper, and onion variety. A solid crunch and bursting with flavor. Among the positives I have two negatives, both of which are not adequate enough to lower their star ranking. Firstly, it took around 20-25 minutes to get our food after ordering. I rarely hold timing against a restaurant as having worked in food, I know lunch rush exists and things happen. To mitigate this (for those in the area) I believe they have an online ordering system, which I would recommend utilizing! Secondly, they do not have indoor seating, so it is a very grab and go type establishment. This is counteracted by the multitude of benches around Royal Oak, though it would be nice to have some amount of seating, especially for those with accessibility needs and those waiting on their food. Overall, Oak House Deli is solid and delicious and I will definitely stop by again when I am in the area!
