I had a great time. We took the boat from Pine Island, and just finding the hidden harbor was an experience. Going into the narrow back cut feels a little like that Humphrey Bogart movie the African Queen... (Please know how to drive your boat before you maneuver in this tight little harbor) once inside the narrow channel it opens up nicely with a number of docs to tie your boat. You'll find a cool gift shop, and tiki hut bar surrounded by a huge swimming pool. The food was good, the beer was cold and time spent there was perfect. read more

If you find yourself on North Cap, I'd strongly recommend you make your way to Barnacles and steer clear of Mango's. We had lunch at Mango's last week. It was a disaster. Food took over an hour and half to come. About 45 minutes in, the server told us that the kitchen was out of grouper and asked what we'd like instead. When a kitchen is out of stock, that info is usually communicated shortly after ordering. Even when the food finally came, the chicken wing appetizer for our 6 year old was missing. When it came, it was spicy instead of mild as requested. But the worst part of our experience was our server. When we expressed frustration about the delay (politely), we were made to feel like it was our fault for not knowing how busy Mango's is every day. Why not let customers know that in advance? The owner was little help, offering us a minimal discount for inconvenience but we still had to pay a mandatory 18% tip for service that fell far short. One silver lining was the other server, who was helpful and understanding. Too bad he's not empowered to do more when customers aren't satisfied. We do know how busy the restaurant is. This is our second year staying in North Captiva, and in that time we've spent hundreds of dollars at Mango's. That's done. We'll be eating elsewhere in the future. read more

The set up is wonderful. Perfect spot for lunch and a cool drink. So disappointed in the food and service. We ordered several things that were ok like children's meals, but ordered a "wood fired" pizza. It was so bad! Nearly Burnt around the edges and the middle wasn't all the way cooked. The "sauce" was globbed on, very thick tomato paste. The toppings were good, but couldn't eat them as the rest of it was inedible. The servers had far too much to do. they were short handed, we guessed. We didn't eat the pizza at all. The server never noticed or she didn't care. We didn't make a fuss and ask for it to be taken Off of the check due to how overworked they were. But be warned. read more

Service is ridiculously slow. Don't go here for lunch unless you have a minimum of 3 hours. It took at least 20 minutes to order and another 1.5 hours to get our food. When we asked why it's taking long, they said these long waits are normal. If the waits are that long, they should tell people that when they arrive. Also, they forgot part of our order and the food was mediocre. Things were left out of the burrito because they ran out of certain vegetables. On top of all that, even though you go to the counter to order and they bring the food out, they automatically add an 18% gratuity. read more

My wife and I stayed at a VRBO on Kingfisher Dr at North Captiva Island Oct '23. We stayed at the same location 2 years ago and had a great time. This time, what a huge disappointment. From the beginning of the trip getting on the ferry the crew on the boat from Island Girl Charters were not friendly. They were stand offish and barely cracked a smile or talked to us. It's been over a year since the hurricane and the island still looks like crap. Honestly, it seems like the people that live there have given up. There are huge piles of garbage and construction/housing debris piled up everywhere, mostly in front of houses by the roadways, pretty much everywhere. It seems like the cleanup efforts have stopped, or never even really started. We were duped about how many restaurants are open. The VRBO website said there were 2 restaurants open plus the Mango's Pool Bar. That's actually not true. There are no restaurants open during the week and one is only open on the weekends. There is a pool bar open during the week for food, but it closes at 6PM. They won't serve you after 5:30PM. The golf cart at the house was a piece of junk. The brakes failed and we were almost involved in a crash with another golf cart pulling out onto a roadway at Kingfish Dr and the main road by the runway. We had to get it exchanged, although that did not happen until the next day. Both golf carts were very dirty. We paid for groceries to be delivered and stocked in the VRBO home for when we arrived. When we got there the groceries were on the kitchen floor in bags. We paid 40% extra for the stocking fee. The local residents on the island obviously aren't too keen on having tourists there yet as they are rude, and actually verbally belligerent as we encountered with one particular resident on Kingfisher Dr where we stayed. There was construction going on until 8PM with loud music from the workers there. The locals that hang out at Mango's seem like a bunch of drunks who give any non-local the stink eye. We expected the water on the Gulf side where we stayed to be clear and pristine, as described on the VRBO page. It was anything but that. It had a yellow mustard tinge to it, obviously something left over from the hurricane and/or red tide that has affected the area. This place is far from being ready for tourists and visitors. In my opinion they are about 5 years from being ready. The way it looks now, it should be called "Dumpster Island" because it's a mess. Do not recommend. Go to the Keys or Carribean instead for sure. read more

Whole in the gulf I like to indulge in as much seafood as possible. The first item on the menu was their famous blue crab burrito. It was beautifully presented but there was no flavor. The dockmaster with the gold teeth is intimidating and will threaten to fight you if you don't listen to his authority. Pirates!!!! We had 2 quesadillas and 2 drinks each between 5 of us. The bill was $237.18 which included a gratuity charge of $34.29. When I questioned, the bartender said we had all ordered doubles!! Every negative review you read is dead on. The waitstaff except for GiGi and Sarah are rude as hell. I don't know what their problem is but if you hate your job that much then find a new one. The music is way too loud and it feels like you are bothering them when you want to order food or drinks. Visited here in April , nice spot , good beer selection. Food was pretty good. Two issues 1) We were sitting at the bar and one of the patrons is swearing profusely and loudly , really obnoxious , kids nearby . Bartender was standing right next to him , actually chatting with him , made no effort to tell the guy to pipe down. Thankfully the guy left 2) Ordered a drink from one bartender , it was delicious / Ordered the same drink from another bartender , she gave us a completely different (wrong) recipe , we said this is not what we ordered , she said, "that's how I make it". We replied , "well that''s not how I've had that drink made anywhere in the world" , she got very agitated , threw the drink out. Thankfully original bartender made the drink the correct way. I thought Mango's was lovely. Service at the bar was good and the food was excellent for Florida fare. Food prices were very fare but drinks, especially mixed drinks are crazy expensive...drinkers will be looking at $60 per person for lunch. On the other hand, it is North Captiva and everything comes in by boat. So if you are a boater and have the skills to handle really tight spaces my bet is that you will have a good time. Just ask what the price is for that Cadillac margarita is before you order ($16). read more

Our family arrived for a weeklong vacation. This is our first time here and knew there were limited restaurants. We planned our menus. Before arriving and planned where and when we would fine out. Mangoes was our first choice as it seemed like it was relaxed with an island vibe. We expected to find friendly wait staff and good good. We couldn't have been more wrong. Everytime we interacted with the bar staff they were rude and less than helpful, that is once we were able to even get their attention. It was like we were doing them a favor by being there. We all ordered the fish tacos which came with fries. The fries were ice cold and I'm not sure what year the fish was caught, but it wasn't this year. I would advise all to stay away from this place, it has the potential to be great! When all of my works lie in shattered ruins about me and I'm but a withered husk of my former self (because, you know, this is bound to happen at some point), I want to end up at a place like this. Sure, you could bottom out in Vegas or New Orleans or Atlantic City or (god forbid) Branson, but when you stagger out the door after having spent your final dollar on a margarita poured into a plastic vessel resembling a piece of modernist architecture, you probably want to be in some place where you're unlikely to freeze to death / be stabbed / run over / given an invitation to attend a revival. No, this is the perfect place to hunch over the open-air bar and mumble angrily at your tropical drink whilst you contemplate your assorted failings. There's a nice narrative symmetry to all this, too, since this is easily the last place you would expect to wind up. Here you are on a virtually unpopulated island where everyone tears around insanely on electric golf carts and the maddened shrieking of the ospreys steadily erodes your very identity itself. Mango's itself is a tiki bar... pool bar... type thing that's linked to, yet separate from, the little commercial area, with a garland of inexplicable beer coozies bestrewn on the north wall and a few of those weird tubey lights that remind me of the guide lights on airplanes and in movie theaters strung up here and there. The patrons are a sort of rag-tag assortment that one cannot say with complete certainty are absolutely not on methamphetamines at any given point. But you have the perfect bartender, a guy who's just businesslike enough for you not to get fed up with him and plenty jolly enough to encourage you to try what the scruffy guy next to you at the bar tried. The drinks are strong, which is perhaps the best you can say of the tropical bar as a genre, in which rum and fruit juice dance their sensual tango in a manner that is at first seductive, but soon becomes a sort of endless alcoholic Bollywood musical, in which you wonder why the dance is still going on and if it will ever end and what sort of a god would let this sort of thing exist in the first place. As with anything that's been ferried over a sound or a bay or a bight or a gulf or whatever, they're ludicrously expensive. But this is to be expected. The food prices, too, will cause you to suffer existentialist crises in which you contemplate how many families in Chad could be fed for how long on the amount of money you just spent on that quesadilla. Nonetheless, it struck me as a little better than you might expect for bar food, so long as you expect bar food to be indiscriminate, high-calorie pucks of gristle accompanied by grotesque red sauce. The fish tacos had a nice peppery tang to them, and the grilled cheese / hamburger club sandwich was a perversely tasty abomination, provided you're prepared to accept the presence of what is undoubtedly, unabashedly processed American cheese. So yeah, I highly recommend Mango's as a place to pore over the tattered remnants of your former life. And, if you're in No Cap for whatever reason, you only have, like, four dining options, so knock yourself out. read more

Out experience will not bring us back to Mango's. We went for lunch and after waiting for about 45 minutes for our food, the server came back to retake our orders as they were out of grouper. It then took another 30-45 min to get only some of our food, which was missing some components. The server then implied it was our fault for not knowing "this is what it's like" at Mango's. The owner was unsympathetic or apologetic. They offered us a 15% "VIP" discount, which didn't mean much after the 18% tip that was automatically added (for minimal service, we had to get the water from the pool area ourselves). We had 3 kids with us, who were so patient, but it would have been very helpful to know up front that it was going to take 2.5 hours to get back to the beach on our last day! Had we known, we would have made another choice. I would strongly recommend Barnacles over Mango's any day!! read more

Save your money. Food is absolute dog food. Live in Florida and come to North Captiva a few times a year. First time at mangos was 2013 and food took well over an hour wait and was disgusting. Figured give them another shot 2 yrs later but food even worse. Fish sandwich was raw. Chicken fingers overcooked to burned dark brown/black. Pizza was just gross. Cardboard with plastic on top or something. I mean how do you screw up a pizza? Don't understand how someone could serve such crap. Lady that works there seems like she is angry at being there. So sad because the island is such an amazing place. Barnacle Phils is a much better experience but their food is slipping as well. The absolute BEST restaurant on the island is Over the Waterfront in Safety Harbor. Chef is awesome and food is delicious. read more

Our week in laid back and lovely North Captiva was so great. So it's a drag that our experience at Mango's was so bloody lousy. There was no attention to customer service. Bartender / waiter far more interested in yapping with locals at bar than tending to dining customers. He was rude and dismissive. Came to our table to take our order and deliver our food -- not once to refill waters, ask how food was, etc. Food was crazy late, overpriced and AWFUL. A trifecta of ick. Maybe they figure since there are only a few dining options on the island, they can be as lousy as they want. But it's really a shame. read more
