Before checking out a theatre show, the family decided to eat at Mango Bay for dinner. They've been a few times to get their Caribbean fix. It's located upstairs on the second floor, above N sur Mackay and next door to Garage Beirut. We dropped in on a Saturday evening (around 6:00pm) with a group of 11. No one was there. The inside looks like it's been converted from an old apartment. There's only one waitress and she was slooooow. She did continuously bring out water jugs for us but go up to pay when you're ready to leave, it'll be faster. The menu is split into appetizers, salads, seafood, main courses, house specialties, burgers & wraps, roti, table d'hote and desserts. Their house specialties (like jerk chicken and curry goat) are pricey ($19.95). - Stew chicken ($12.95) - chicken slowly cooked in a rich homemade gravy. I went with the stewed chicken; tender but salty. Rice and peas were dry and a tad bland. Best thing was the plantains (sweet and tender) and the carrots. - Negril chicken ($14.49) - char grilled chicken breast marinated and cooked in a sweet and spicy Caribbean spice. One relative found it "spicy". - Curry goat roti ($10.49) - my mom went with the goat; tasty and with a good bite. Oddly, they put in pieces that have bones in it. Roti itself was strangely dry. - Grilled salmon ($19.95) - char grilled salmon seasoned with Caribbean spices. Didn't find anything special about MB. Pricey for what you get, especially with so many other quality spots nearby. read more

I wrote a review for Mango Bay's previous location on Bishop street about 2 years back, it's certainly nice to see them move and re-open. Some places will never survive like this. Location - On Rue MacKay between Rene Levesque and Ste. Catherine, close to Metro Guy-Concordia. Not a conspicious place - near a mosque and upstairs from a Korean restaurant. The restaurant is on the second floor of a townhouse with stairs only, if you have mobility issues, you might want to look elsewhere (or get delivery). The townhouse is elegantly decorated by the owner with some of his personal momentos. If you look inside the corner trophy case you'll see jewelry for sale by local Jamaican artisans. Service - A bit slow - it looks like only the owner (Aubrey) is manning the helm on a Friday lunch hour - He was doing the cooking, serving the tables, mixing the drinks, settling the bills and etc. When we stopped by at noon there was no one there except a gentleman who seemed to be there to pick something up - he mentioned that the owner is here and at the kitchen. We sat down and waited about 10 minutes. Then another set of customers showed up. Then Aubrey showed up and greeted us. In about 5 minutes the drinks were served, and within 15 we have food on our table. Throughout the meal Aubrey will be dealing with the other customers, the takeout orders, and basically checking in on us once in awhile. We shared a laugh or 2. The food - I had the brown stew chicken (served with plantains, Jamaican sweet potatoes, and rice with peas), and my wife had the Chicken Roti (no sides). The brown stew chicken is good, but the sauce is not as thick and hearty as its Brooklyn counterparts. The Roti was solid with a good solid Jamaican curry gravy and bits of potatoes throughout. The plantains were sweet, thick rounds, browned on each side but not greasy. The sweet potatoes were good, and the rice and peas have a hint of coconut and nutmeg to them. The Drinks - I went with Sorrel (Hisbiscus tea with ginger) - sweet and spicy with the nutmeg-ginger kick. My wife ordered Ting (Jamaican Grapefruit soda). Value - I paid about 15/person for a lunch meal with drinks included -it's about what you would expect for a sit-down place downtown. It's a solid Jamaican place that matches the quality of decent ones in Toronto or Flatbush (Brooklyn). There are other Jamaican shops in town (2 in C-d-N (not near the Metro) and one in ParkEx, and 2 near Centre-Ville, with one just up the block from the Musee du Art Contemporaire), but this one is pretty good. I can safely say that this is the worst dining experience I've had in the last year. Guy took 30min to take our order on a Sunday evening. We had mango chicken and jerk chicken. The jerk chicken (3.5/5) was flavorful but unbalanced. The spiciness covered up the other flavors and for 16.00$, I expected more than a single chicken breast. The mango chicken (1/5), another Chef's speciality, sounded so much more interesting than it tasted. Imagine dipping slices of salted chicken breast in mango nectar (concentrated mango juice essentially), that would be an accurate description of the flavor profile. Water tasted like detergent that wasn't washed off. Restaurant empty on a Sunday around 7pm on Mackay and Ste-Catherine. One song playing on repeat during my 1.5h dinner. This place has amazing food. The flavors are great and portions are perfect. I always get the stir fry and usually throw in a Pattie. If you've never had a pattie before definitely give it a try they are very delicious. I just can't bring myself to give 5 stars though. I usually order them for lunch while I'm working and they cancel orders minutes before I'm expecting it to arrive. Give this place a try for sure but don't count on delivery if you are crunched for time. They just might cancel! read more

We were looking for Caribbean food downtown and the pictures seemed promising, so we headed to this third floor walk up in a stately, historical building. Beware: This is not Caribbean, it is Jamaican. Everything seemed copacetic as the decor was lovely and colourful. Then the very brief and succinct menu arrived and we were faced with chicken, chicken and more chicken. There were only two other main courses on the menu, which consisted of highly overpriced fish dishes. This being the case we opted for two appetizers and the soup of the day. The soup was good with hand rolled dumplings. The cod fish cakes were also good but somewhat spicy. The beef patties were way too spicy considering that a spice sauce was served on the side with both appetizers. My Mexican friend sharing the meal with me is an eater of all things spicy, but it was way too spicy for even him! Two words: jerk chicken. Best jerk chicken I've ever had! Unlike most Caribbean joints, this is a full service restaurant instead of a take out joint and it is pricier than other Carribean places but I must say that it's worth the price. The restaurant was completely empty for dinner but that didn't stop us. The waitress was also extremely kind and friendly. We got the oxtail (approx. $19) and the jerk chicken (approx $16) but the jerk chicken was the definite winner. Every bite was like an explosion of flavour and I enjoyed every moment of it. I was secretly contemplating if I should order another plate just to take home. The oxtail was a bit average in comparison and a large portion was just bone but it was still good, albeit maybe not worth the price. 5 stars for the mind blowing jerk chicken and excellent service. Hopefully this place gets more business cus I truly believe they deserve it! Check it out! read more

Have no idea what happened to Mango Bay. They fell off hard. Maybe it was just an off-night? I came here for the first time earlier this Summer. Had the jerk chicken plate and it was delicious. I raved about it to other friends based on my experience. Came here for my 2nd visit last week and I don't know if they changed management, recipes, or staff, but everything was a huge let down. From the time they took our order to the time they brought the beef patties, 45 minutes had gone by. You know when you're hungry and the food takes forever to come out, you start getting cranky? Yes that was me. Beef patty was decent but I was really anticipating the jerk chicken plate. Finally another 15 minutes later (so now we've waited a total of 1 hour for the main dish) the jerk chicken plate arrives. Very very very weak flavor. The chicken is spicy (which I like) but has no flavor behind it. It's like they just put pepper but nothing else, not even salt. It's even watery. The rice and peas were extremely bland. After waiting all that time, this made the experience very disappointing. Not to mention we also waited over 40 minutes for drinks. An extremely weak rum punch and mango daquiri with very little alcohol in either. It was as if they literally just poured the juice from a dole pineapple or tropicana carton and put a splash of rum. My friend and I were the only patrons in the restaurant when we walked in on a Friday night around 8pm, so there was really no excuse for the food to have taken that long and to have tasted so underwhelming. I know how it goes in carribean restaurants sometimes. The food may take a while but in the end the taste is worth it. This was not the case. The food took forever and the taste was even worse. Montreal is a city known for its high quality restaurants. Mango Bay falls far from the mark. I would not waste my money here again. So many other better options in this city. Came here with a friend that likes Caribbean food. She had wanted to try their Acke and salt fish since this summer's Caribbean Festival in the old port, they made her wait for 2 hours, promising that it was on it's way from their downtown restaurant. For some reason if they were to cook it on the spot it could be dangerous...?! So she gave up and ate something else which wasn't great. Our visit to their restaurant wasn't much better. The cook/owner/waiter/DJ...seemed bothered by our presence, my friend asked for the achy and salt fish and was told they were out! They were sold out for the day! They just opened up one hour earlier and there was 6 people in the dinning room! Wow! Sold out in an hour! After about 10 minutes he returned to tell her that they had just enough for one plate! I guess they must have found some through the garbage or on the floor? Oh wow! Thank you so much! Ridiculous. This is Kitchen Nightmare candidate! I ate a tiny and tasteless chicken roti. Ambiance here sucks. Staff sucks. Climbing up the stairs sucks. Never again. Boom J's in Lasalle will always be my favorite place to get a HUGE juicy spicy jerk chicken roti. Sorry but when you feel unwelcome by the staff and their food isn't any better, it's hard to give more than 2 stars. read more

I was visiting Montreal from NYC. I was pleasantly surprised to find a Jamaican restaurant! I had the Jerk Chicken with Peas and rice, as well as the fish cake appetizers. I also had the Jamaican Love Drink. The Pros: The food and drink tasted good. I really enjoyed it. I also like the feel and look of the restaurant. I just moved from brooklyn late last year and had a serious craving for curry.Well first it was fried chicken but we decided some yummy caribbean food would work as well.When we arrived the place was so empty no one greeted us.We yelled out a few times and finally someone came out that look like we bothered him.I really wanted west indian cuisine or I would have happily went downstairs to the more inviting korean spot!Anyway we ordered some rather tasty mango wings which we demolished.Then on to curry chicken and a grilled chicken.Both came with rice and peas ,really good plantains,and sweet potatoe.The food was good..mind blowing no but it was solid and hit the spot.I have very high expectations coming from brooklyn so u have to really blow my mind.So far the only mind blowing with caribbean food has been my kitchen in Montreal.Anyway the service was blah until the waitress showed up.My date complained about the customer service asking if she should tip him since he doesnt care to much.lol.I may try Boom J then come back for at least those banging mango wings and plantains. read more
