I've been going here ever since. The last time I brought my husband for a haircut and beard trim. He's happy as well. Highly recommended.

I have long, thick curly hair and paid 80 USD (excluding tip) for a haircut and 70 USD (also excluding tip) for a blowout. The hairstylist, Nesa, was super friendly and gave me the haircut and the blowout at different times, two weeks apart. I did not go in with a reference picture and just asked her to do whatever she thought would look best. I was not disappointed. I was a little bit confused about the price of the blowout v haircut. It struck me as strange that there was only a ten dollar difference between the two, given that when I had the haircut, the blowout was included in the 80 USD I paid. I have never had a blowout as a separate service (in any salon) before, so I don't know if this is typical. This is a very unassuming salon in a university neighbourhood, with a ten dollar discount for students (unsure if this is just for UChicago students: call and check). The ambience is clean but unexceptional. Overall, I recommend this place. Of the other hair salons I have been to in HP, I have liked this one the best.

The Best Haircut in Hyde Park…read more When you walk into 57th Beauty Salon it's like walking back in time to the 70s. I don't think they've renovated the place since then and I don't think they ever should. My favorite things about 57th Street Beauty Salon are Esther's kindness, the fish tank, and the drowsy chic atmosphere. For a haircut, i'm always in and out of there in 30 minutes or less.

I have natural hair and it usually takes an hour from start to finish. Typically, at some point while the stylist is doing my hair the owner glances over and appears to be annoyed with the time it takes. So, this review is not about the stylist who does a good job, it is about the business itself. Yesterday, I got the two-strand twist and was told that it would be the last time that I could get the service done by the owner, a black man. When asked why, I was told something about people walking by...which I concluded that it was the optics he didn't like, i.e., the optics of a black woman with natural hair getting her natural hair done by another black woman. Apparently, it's not a look he wants his shop to have on 57th St., with the surrounding U of C community, too much ethnicity. This black owned shop has a preferred clientele which is either white male or female or Asian. Black hair is too ethnic and though we pay more it's not the image this business wants. In 2026, the adage, if you're white - you're right, brown - stick around, and if you're black, get back is what should hang on their business. I won't be back.

I have been coming to this location regularly for different braid styles, braid takedowns, as well…read moreas hair treatments and the employees as well as the manager are very kind and customer focused. I do feel like their staff go out their way to make sure the customer is comfortable as well as heard. Anytime I have no idea what I'm scheduling, they'll walk me through what to book and the prices are upfront. I also appreciate the various ways you can pay, and again they're very upfront about their policies. Check them out and see for yourself. I know they have tons and tons of other services besides braids, they do color, twist, dreads, etc. I've felt so comfortable there. I do enjoy my visits to this salon.

My mom referred me to this salon months ago. This salon reminded me why I don't enjoy going to hair…read moresalons. It seems like they have a more capitalistic approach to their hair services. This particular review is for my daughter's most recent hair appointment, the requested hair style was knot less large braids. I would say scheduling was easy, but after scheduling for a Saturday afternoon, I was texted by the hairstylist to let me know that I was "waitlisted" and was asked if I can come in earlier during the week, luckily I had some wiggle room in my schedule. Anyways, things were going well my daughter was checked in and provided a kid smock and was nice and comfortable. After,I left is when things took a turn. While I was out, apparently I was contacted by whomever to ask about a $40 detangling fee. Unfortunately, due to poor cell service in the area I did not receive any calls or text until I was able to get reception. After getting the text messages, Albiet a couple hours late, I returned the messages and explained that not only did my daughter not have braids for months, but I had already detangled her hair twice to avoid this issue. I already know how these type of salons operate & I am very knowledgeable about how to detangle coily hair. It seemed to me that this salon attempts to nickel and dime you for any and everything. It was very alarming that the hairstylist couldn't tell the difference between human hair and synthetic hair. She mentioned the braiding hair was "soft". Then proceeded to ask me if I wanted to curl the ends of the hair. I think it's telling. Anyways; they tried to lessen the blow by saying they will only charge $15 or whatever for their "detangle" fee. At that point I just wanted to get out of there. I won't attach any pictures of my daughter's hair but once I was almost home I noticed several of the braids were crooked and the braids itself look sloppy. The worst part about the whole ordeal was the text message response I received this evening which echos some of the other reviews that some of the staff here is very unprofessional. It was in response to their automatic survey request of which I briefly summarized my dissatisfaction with the service. Instead of leading with curiosity and understanding to see what could improved, I was met with a very negative response. If by chance the owner or whomever sees this, I don't want another snotty response like this. I've never been so disappointed, disrespected and demeaned as a person who genuinely wants to patronize these type of business.
