First, I'm so appreciative this shop is open on Sundays. I had a last minute interview for Monday and really needed a cleanup. I was able to get in and out on a Sunday. That's one of the reasons I love this place. The barbers are skilled so you can always get what you're looking for. I'm sensitive with my lining so I always go to Ish to preserve it. How the worst experience ever! My son had a 12:30 with Ishamel and he tells my son he can't take him and then goes to lunch. Passes my son off to someone else who has him wait 3hours! For once I found a good barbershop and a good barber (Tony) and appreciate the convenience and comfortable vibe you get in the shop.

Their website and sign on the door clearly states that they close at 8pm and I walked in at 6:50 and asked if they were appointment only. 1. When I made the reservation, I asked if the price include hair washing. They said yes. But after getting hair cut, they said I need to pay $5 more for washing hair. That's too expensive. 2. After washing my hair, they don't have a hairdryer. 3. The hairdresser could not make my hairstyle symmetric, even I asked him to modify several times. 4. When I asked the hairdresser to modify my hair, he didn't make me wear the gown tight. So much hair dropped on my clothes, in my collar. 5. When the hairdresser cut my hair, he turned my swivel chair once and once again to cut the different areas of my hair, making me very dizzy. But he didn't move any longer. The most terrible haircut I have ever been all over the world. I really can't understand why so many people give this kind of store a five-star review. I went, as a walk in, was told there was one person ahead but then I'd be next. 2 hours and 4 other people later I left without a hair cut. Other people walked in after me, who apparently had been there before, and got service right away. No one acknowledged me at all despite sitting in plain sight. They have relaxed atmosphere and a mature clientele. My choice is Leah B, a professional barber with an keen sense of style. She graciously takes my odd appointment requests with genuine character. I love this babershop and Trinia is the most precise barber and best loctician I have ever been to. Here's why: while other's may be great at styling and making sure that your locs are tight at the roots, Trinia maintains your entire loc, from root to tip. She is meticulous, she is patient and she is simply great at what she does. The maintenance process is lengthy (be prepared to stay all day) but so worth it. I have since moved from Chicago, but made an appointment with her when I went for a recent business trip and I will continue to do so bc I trust her with my hair. Oh, and her method of loc repair is like MAGIC! Ive never seen anything like it. If you want styling, there are many places you can go in Chicago. But if you want someone to really take care of your locs, this is where you need to go. read more

Nice respectful barbershop. Great service, I can't believe I forgot the barbers name who cut my hair (big no-no) but he did an amazing job. Great attention to detail and was so entertaining. You could tell from his interactions with other that he had a big personality and made others feel better. The shop was nice and big, lots of barbers but I still wouldn't chance it and would try to make a reservation if possible. My first time bringing my son to this shop was a very enjoyable experience. The shop was clean, well-kept, and pleasing. Leah, the barber with whom he had his appointment, was on-time, friendly, and very knowledgeable about her craft. She gave me specific instructions and information on how to combat my son's dry scalp issues. She also took great care in cutting his hair and did an excellent job. I got a haircut here this afternoon. I haven't been to a barber shop in YEARS because I usually just shave all my hair off all strong my head lol. But I decided I wanted a new look and would go for a Mohawk. So I called ahead made an appointment. The atmosphere is very friendly all the barbers seem like they know what they are doing and are friendly to their clients. Done even seem to know they're clients really personally which is great. The guy who cut my hair was Jaffar, here did a great job, he was very careful and precise with my hair and my first Mohawk turned out to excellent! Right away he was in a god complex attitude and condescending and most of all not even trying to list to me. He would maaaybe we could fit you maaaybe not. As a student at the University of Chicago, a nearby place to quickly and easily get a men's cut is an important thing for a student to seek out and find in his first few months in Hyde Park. It's also difficult! Many places charge $30+ bucks for a fast cut that used to cost me $7 in the early 1990's in my hometown barbershop. I almost ended up taking an hour long CTA journey to BoysTown to get a trendy 'do. Thankfully I found Leah (who was at another salon at the time with rave reviews on their Yelp page). Leah is real professional. Someone else's review stated that she makes you feel as if you were at the spa without the spa price and I would say that's the best way to describe my 5 or 6 haircuts with her. Additionally, she shapes beards and brows to make men look professional, sleek, and well-groomed. Clean, accurate lines is the best way to describe her haircutting style. She also makes sure you know how to style your new hairstyle and what products you should use and where to find them at the best price. My reviews tend to be too verbose, but if I were to boil it down, I'd say: Go see Leah (and make an appointment because she's busy) if you want someone who listens to what you want and delivers it, along with some education about how to keep your hair and style it to its best potential. read more

DO NOT get stuck with LEAH, she's Very UNPROFESSIONAL and can not stand any comments or suggestions from her clients. after the first time, I CALLED AND TEXTED FOR A SECOND APPOINTMENT BUT SHE NEVER ANSWERED ME when I really needed a haircut, she didn't even bother to tell me that she doesn't want to cut my hair anymore and I had to look for a new barber when I didn't have time to do so. I went to HPHS for a haircut and I had Leah as my barber. I've been to many barbershops in the Chicago area, but I've never had a cut so clean and professional as I did with her. Not only did I get an awesome cut, but Leah's stellar customer service made it an all around fantastic experience. She's highly skilled, can do all hair types and artistic graphics. I walked out feeling like Leah gave me the spa treatment without the spa prices! Because I'm an hour outside the area, the fact they offer Sunday appointments make's it absolutely worth the commute. I came across this barbershop when I needed to find a place for my son's first haircut. The barbershop I went to was great, but it was not "child" friendly as there was a lot of swearing and the conversation was definitely for adults. I live in Hyde Park and just happened to walk by the shop and saw a child getting his hair cut. I went in and met a barber named Tony. I told him i needed to get my son's first hair cut and wanted to make an appointment. Before I brought my son, I came to get my hair cut just to check out the atmosphere first. It was great! Funny, but professional. I brought my son Cameron to get his first hair cut and Tony did a fantastic job. That was (17) years ago and no one else (barbershop and Tony) has cut my son's hair. In addition, after my second son Connor was born and it was his time and to get his hair cut, I brought him to Tony. That was (13) years ago. Don't be fooled by these 4 & 5 star reviews. I've had enough barbers cut my hair to know the difference between a skilled barber and a hack. The barbers in this establishments are hacks. Refer to the 1 star review left by Joe.M for this barbershop. I had a similar experience. I asked for a fade with a modern twist to it. As my hack of a barber described it, it is a "specialty haircut" for which he insisted that there was a surcharge above and beyond the usual price. I totally agree that my haircut request should cost more as it is a higher level of difficulty. But the barber couldn't even get the basics right. My hairline is uneven, and my fade isn't faded. I informed the barber that i couldn't accept his first attempt. He tried to fix the mess and it just got worst. At that point, I wanted to salvage what was left and said it was fine so I could limit the damage.I can't , My haircut is straight up laughable. My friends had the best time laughing their butts off looking at my head. It was the first and last time i'll ever come to this place. My advice is that unless you want to be someone's joke, don't visit this establishment. I've never written a review on here before, but Hyde Park Hair Salon is so fantastic that I just had to spread the word. I have tons of great things to say about this place, but the most important one is that Leah is FANTASTIC!! I saw Leah for the first time last spring, and just recently went back for another hair cut (I am bad about getting my hair cut regularly). Not only does Leah do a great job with my hair (I have gotten lots of compliments both times she has cut it) but she is kind, friendly, and really gets to know her customers. Despite it being such a long time since I came last, Leah remembered everything--how she cut my hair last time, how I style it, and where I work. She really makes you feel valued and is a wonderful person to talk to. In addition to the awesomeness of Leah, the salon itself has a great atmosphere--it's a small space so being there is relaxing and comfortable, all of the staff are friendly, and they all clearly enjoy their work too, which makes it a fun place to be. I won't be going anywhere else for a haircut as long as I live in Chicago! read more

Master barbers? Don't believe so. Believed from the reviews that this was a great place, and that I would leave enlightened with confidence with a new look. Well I got a "new" look alright. Fortunately, I walked-in and got attended almost immediately (hence my one star), but that's the last of the good news. The barber asked what I wanted, and when I told him that I wanted a fade with a modern cut-on-the-side he looked unsure. Had to break it down to the point where doubts started brewing. Gave him the benefit-of-the-doubt; my mistake. My haircut took twice as long as the usually do, but what got me worried/irritated to the point were I wanted to get up from his chair and walk out with a half done haircut was that with each stroke of his buzzers seemed uneven/hesitant. Lame-man terms, he didn't know what he was doing. At the end of my haircut the barber showed me what his finished work looked like and it was a squared-up instead of fade and my cut-on-the-side was too low on making it look asymmetrical. I was such a hot mess that I instantly put on a beanie as I walked out of the barbershop. Than I went to work wearing my only hat, specifically a hunter's orange beanie until I could get to another barber to correct what got done to me. Total cost for this haircut was around $60. Hadn't ever paid that much for my haircut until now; don't know about you, but that's pretty steep for my blood. read more
