She was originally recommended to…read moreme by one of my best friends, who usually knows what he's talking about, so I took that recommendation as high praise. What I didn't know at the time was that even his recommendation fell short of describing the person and professional she truly is. Over the years, Rakiah has become more than just my stylist. She's my first call whenever I want to do something different with my hair. I recently decided to cut it shorter, and I had complete confidence that she would guide me in the right direction. Her understanding of what works, what doesn't, and what is truly best for your hair is something you rarely find in this profession. She isn't interested in simply giving you what you ask for. She wants you to leave looking your best, and that level of care shows in her work. I'm grateful that we've stayed connected all these years, and I honestly can't imagine trusting anyone else with my hair. Lastly, her current location is not only convenient but also warm, personal, and welcoming. It's the kind of place where you immediately feel comfortable, and I could easily spend the whole day relaxing in her suite.

I went to Delores, but a few people that i ran into that had locs, and been to that shop before said that Doug was the person to see & that my locs would have been flawless if i would of went to him. But everyone said Delores still did a decent job, but doug would of laid it out for me. I wish i would of knew that in advance because i want my dreads to look really good... But we will see how it grows out, and delores was really nice, and knowledgeable on doing dreads so will see. I'll post some update pictures in 3months. If i would of known about the great reputation doug had i would of preferred him though.

I always speaks with owner of any shop I walk in for the first time. I spoke to Doug about my hair, in about a year in with my locs grey/black frizzed out lots of new growth after our consultation Doug suggested crochet $150. No problem. 1. The crochet at the root looked so neat, but he only did the root and did not crochet the rest of the new growth. I'm so disappointed until I'm just done with locs. I say to all Loctician's there are all kind of videos to view a correct approach for great looking locs seems I always get lazy techs. I'm 71 years old and my grey/black loc experience ends here. I've had it! When you walk in a shop, speak with the owner and explain what you want please refer that client to maybe another stylist that is up to doing the job correct the first time. I'm not please with Doug, but perhaps that was a bad day and he will do better with someone else. I didn't bother reaching out to Doug, but I believe in reviews. Ms Coleman

Introduce the legendary (drum rolls please)....Carolyn Marie Dudash!!…read more Carolyn did it! She now has her own space, and we, the loyal clients, have vowed to follow her wherever she goes. I found her as my go-to hair dresser while she was at Vanite in Boystown three (3) years ago. All I have to say is: she KNOWS hair, with a gigantic capital "K." My thick Asian hair looks better than ever because of her artistic touch. I'm an extreme minimalist when it comes hair. In other words, I don't put products on it; I don't really use special shampoo or conditioner; I simply blow-dry my hair usually if I have time (or leave it alone if time isn't on my side). However, Miss Carolyn takes care of me and I'm more than happy to see her every eight (8) weeks. "Carolyn Marie" is located inside Sola Salon, diagonally across from the CTA Paulina Brown Line station. Look for "suite #23." Check out her Instagram photos. She's an amazing colorist!

I am SO picky when it comes to my bob haircut and finding the perfect shade of blonde for the season. I'm always wanting to try something new, and Carolyn never ceases to amaze me. This lady knows hair! It's rare for me to say "I Trust You" when it comes to my hair, but I completely put all my trust in her! Her new space is so cute! And can we talk about the shampoo bowl? It's COMFORTABLE! Is that a thing?! It's cushioned and lowers to your height so that you don't get that little crick in your neck. Matched with the scalp massage and calming spa music? It's heaven! Carolyn Marie Hair is a must!

I reached out to Kaylan, the owner of Golden Era Hair Salon, after having a bit of a hair crisis…read moreearlier this week. My previous stylist had taken me much blonder than I was expecting, perhaps due to a miscommunication, and while the work itself was beautiful, I just didn't feel like myself. I am truly a brunette at heart and really just wanted to feel like me again, with a little dimension! Kaylan was able to get me in SUPER last minute with Jackie, who I now owe everything to. From the second I sat in her chair, Jackie took the time to consult with me, really listened to exactly what I wanted, and somehow made absolute magic happen. I may have only been blonde for about 36 hours, but I genuinely didn't feel confident or like myself during that time. Jackie immediately brought that confidence back. I am BEYOND obsessed with my hair. It is everything I dreamed of, if not better, and I finally feel like myself again. Thank you doesn't even feel strong enough for Jackie, Kaylan, and the entire Golden Era team. I will be recommending them to absolutely everyone -- and bonus points that they're right in my neighborhood! I officially found my salon.

I don't normally do reviews but this was terrible! It was my second time at Golden Era with Jackie,…read moreand unfortunately, I would not recommend this salon based on my experience. The first time I came in, we did a blonde balayage. Jackie explained that my hair couldn't go extremely blonde right away without causing damage, but that we could gradually get it lighter over time. I understood that and was completely fine with going blonde little by little. About a month and a half later, I returned for a root touch-up and asked Jackie if I needed a toner because my hair had started looking yellow. I specifically wanted to maintain the blonde we had been working toward. Instead, my hair was toned significantly darker, to the point where the toner covered almost all of the balayage that had been done previously. I was left with hair that looked darker than when I started. What is especially frustrating is that I was told we would gradually work toward a blonder result, so I don't understand why such a dark toner was used in the first place. The appointment also felt rushed because Jackie had to leave. Four days later, after realizing I was still very unhappy with the result, I reached out to explain how dark my hair was and asked if there was anything that could be done to fix it. I was extremely upset by this experience, not only because my hair was left much darker than what we had discussed, but because of how the situation was handled afterward. I reached out because I genuinely wanted to see if there was a way to fix it. Rather than communicating with me or trying to find a solution, I was essentially told, "too bad, find someone else." That was incredibly disappointing and, in my opinion, very unprofessional. I paid over $540 for my first appointment and over $240 for the second, so having to now spend additional time and money at another salon to correct the color is extremely frustrating. This entire experience was a complete waste of my time and money. I would not recommend Golden Era or Jackie.

The only complaint is that it was so painful to put my hair into an upward ponytail because the braids around the edges were so tight. They also did a good job on my daughter's cornrows, but of course the braids were too tight. The atmosphere is like most African braid shops, they could all stand a deep cleaning. The braiders speak in their native tongue, while the customers endure long hours of braiding and getting an ear full. Of couse, you get your regular solicitors coming in trying to sell their merchandise. Overall, it's a layed back environment. Aicha herself is really sweet, and she listens to what the customer wants. She will also give you her advise if it's accepted. Her co-braider can be very opinionated about what she feels you should do with your hair. However, you would love the results. The neighborhood is really laid back for a shop on a busy street (North Ave). You have McDonald's one block west of the shop and a gas station. Two blocks east you have a Wendy's, and Pizza Hut. You will not find any healthy joints near this shop. Also, if you're in the mood for Jerk Chicken, 3D's is about four blocks west on North Ave. Give Aicha a try if you're in the area looking to get your hair braided. They braid really tiny and of course neat.
