I hadn't been to the Mandarin in a few years. Not much has changed, other than the price increasing over the years. Last time I went they had a sushi section but they didn't have sashimi; they do now. I really enjoyed the tuna and salmon sashimi and I ate quite a bit. We went for our anniversary and while I generally don't care much for cooked salmon they had teriyaki salmon that night and it was really good. Some dishes were just meh (the mussels in sauce) but other dishes did shine, the meatballs, general tao and the noodles. My other half had the prime rib and he enjoyed it. I was pretty disappointed in the creme brulee . Tasted more like pudding, topped and sugared unfortunately. We drive 50KM to order take out to bring home. I was impressed. The portion sizes are excellent. The food is exceptional. The packaging is the best, the packing into paper bags was great, zero leaks. Prices are reasonable. The bonus gingerbread cookies were the best. Coming back in April, wish it was sooner. There are not any Chinese restaurants where I live that comes close to your product. Took my kids to Mandarin because our middle child really wanted to go. We arrived and it took time to seat all 5 of us because they were waiting to open up the room with the aquarium. It was worth the wait because the kids liked looking at the fish. Warm towels at the beginning and end is always a nice touch. Once she took our drink order we were off to the races. The food selection is amazing but quality is just okay, but it delivered what I expected. Sushi options were fine and selection of Asian cuisine was warm and tasted like it wasn't sitting under the lights too long. Dessert area is massive with different types of ice cream and soft serve, cake, tarts etc... We went for lunch so when the bill came - I found it fair for the diverse options you get. I would go for lunch but would skip dinner because dinner would be expensive. For the cost of dinner we could get a lot of dishes from a better Chinese place in Toronto. read more

Over all not amazing in terms of food. It's a Wednesday day so I think that's why they didn't refill as often as they should. The sashimi was mostly empty throughout our time here. The sushi selection was also small and uninteresting. We had the salad which is fairly the same offerings as many of the mandarins, but they are not well seasoned. The shrimp with dill had no flavour not sure how that liquid was white without the taste of milk or cream in it. The chicken salad also had some peices that were stale and all were not seasoned well. The eggplant salad had large pieces of tough eggplant (young and eglinton makes this dish really well). Egg rolls were something I enjoyed, the plum sauce had some funny after taste to it, kind of like a citrus air freshener. The wings are the same across all mandarin, they're tasty, crunchy and very moist, always enjoyable. The broiled half salmon on the other hand was dry and douced with taryaki sauce Dessert table looks fancy, there are two selections of desserts. The fruit table the ice cream section, the waffle section, and the cookies and pie section. Bread pudding here is simply amazing!! Same can be said about their waffles, fresh and tasty. If I'm at Mandarin you know my father's in town. This guy loves Mandarin! It never suprises me anymore that he will pick this place over the most authentic Chinese restaurant and we are Chinese. He thinks he's beating the system. Eating more than he's spending. It's ok, I love seeing how excited he gets when I cave in. It's like when I was a kid and getting to go to McDonald. How the tables have turned. The food is mediocre. Nothing is seasoned. Selection is actually low compared to the trending Asian buffets ie: Dragon Pearl and spoonful. I really think they need to step their game up on the seasoning. They aren't the only buffet on the block anymore. We had dinner delivered tonight, for the last time. We've been disappointed before, but usually on a Friday or Saturday when things were understandably busy. Tonight our first course was missing entirely, Our second was luke warm, and our third - chicken dumplings - was ice cold and so dried out around the edges as to be inedible. It must have sat exposed for a very long time. This experience has convinced us that this restaurant is very poorly managed and no attention is being paid to take out or delivery orders. read more

Not much I can say about the Mandarin that most people don't already know. It's a great place to go if you like Chinese food buffets. Big selection, lots of variety, good quality, good service, good prices, very clean. By far the best option if you're in the mood for a Chinese buffet. Definitely not the best Chinese food around, but overall it is a fantastic option for families, couples, groups that want to have a good time, eat lots of good food at a reasonable price. This is probably the worst experience I've had at a restaurant ever. My parents took my wife, daughter and I there for a celebration dinner. But when asked for tea, they brought us one bottle of tea and one tea cup only. So we asked our waitress for three more cups. She then told us that this establishment charges tea by the cup, not the bottle, so if we want three more cups, we would pay for three more teas. That sounded pretty ridiculous as in decades of dining in restaurants, we've never been asked to pay for tea individually before. So we asked to talk to the manager. The manager then proceeded to tell us in a very patronizing tone that we've been misinformed by all the restaurants, that is in fact how every restaurant charges their customers. She made us feel extremely stupid, and very angry. But we decided to just have our dinner and leave. Then it gets better! My mom has poor eye sights, and when she grabbed something that looked appetizing off of the sushi bar, a server reaches out from inside her station and grabbed it off of my mom's plate, startling her, the server then announced dismissively that it was for decoration only and walked away. It's ironic that we, a family of Chinese people felt extremely discriminated against in an Asian buffet. My parents have always liked Mandarin, and they consider it a destination to take family and out of town guests, but today's experience has convinced us that this company is not in good hands, and none of us will be visiting again. read more

Food and service are always good. I find the best times to go is during a festival. During festivals(Chinese New Year, Mandarin Anniversary, etc), they serve dishes they usually don't. It gives it a fresh taste from the usual. Always up to try something new! I like that they have roast beef and mashed potatoes for the picky eaters. Not gonna lie, it's pretty good. The sushi is ok. They've been expanding their dessert selection. There's soft serve ice cream, chocolate covered strawberries(OMG) and unlimited cotton candy. Always a good choice. We are utterly disappointed with Mandarin Oshawa. it's the second time we order since the end of 2022 and all in our household have been sick like dogs overnight after dinner. I'm not sure what's going on in that kitchen lately but you're lucky we didnt ask food inspection authorities to go and have a look, we think food quality has gotten THIS bad really, while it used to be a home favourite in Durham. I've been to many different Mandarin locations and it's always been the same for me EXCEPT for the Oshawa location. Although the food in every Mandarin seems pretty much the same to me, what made this Mandarin special was the level of service! I was very pleased with my dinner at Mandarin because everyone was so nice! Although, it is a walk around buffet our server always checked if we needed anything and was always on the ball when it came to clearing any dirty/finished plates. Was trying to make a reservation on Chinese New Year Eve as is an hour drive from our home. The person wouldn't take it so we drove to Belleville instead. Doubt if we will try again as Imperial Buffet off 401 just near Salem exit had a better selection. Another family birthday meal . We usually order food for New Years from Mandarin. In the past it has been delicious. This year it was terrible. The spareribs were breaded and all bone. The Mandarin vermicelli noodles which are normally my favourite were cut into small portions and were bland. We were promised a mug but got cheap chopsticks instead. Interestingly my wife took one of her employees to lunch at the Mandarin and found the prices more expensive (Holiday Pricing!) and the food was overdone and nothing special. They charged for green tea and then charged my wife's employee extra for a cup so she could have some of the tea from my wife's teapot. We will not be going back to the Mandarin ever! I've been going to the Mandarin for years, and I've never left sad. The Oshawa location has immensely improved over the years, and I'm very happy to say that. We just went while their Moon Festival was happening, and it was lovely. The only thing I don't like that has changed was the cost. Last time I went last year during Christmas, it cost about $63 for my boyfriend and I. Today, for dinner, it cost us $78 with 1 root bear, including tax, not counting tip (I like to tip quality service). It's becoming insanely expensive to eat here. I love Mandarin, but it seems it'a becoming too costly for us to visit. Other than my sour view on the final bill, this place is lovely. If you're not overly concerned about price, then I would 100% recommend Mandarin to you. read more

I'm giving it full rating based on comparison to other buffets. The Mandarin in Oshawa is always consistently above average for a buffet in Ontario. It is always clean and i have never yet had a questionable experience. Not bad, considering i am there with family a half dozens times a year. The fact that it is always rammed, keeps their buffet tables fresh from sitting in the hot trays for too long -- something that can't be said for 'comparables' in Durham Region. Food: Same as any other Mandarin although it isn't as packed as the ones in Toronto. As well, less people means more crab legs for me. This was our once a year spot to go and get crab legs when family was in town from the east coast. They and all other locations have stopped serving crab legs all together and the results are what you would expect. Barely any diners on a Saturday at prime time. This restaurant is nasty and disgusting. I went there for the second time for lunch buffet. While I was getting food, a bunch of small spider cockroach looking bugs came crawling out from the food all over my plate. A huge one flew and came on me. I was screaming and trying to throw the bug off me but none of the staff came to see what was wrong. I was trying to find someone to tell but none of them cared and couldn't speak English. The sushi lady eventually came to ask what's wrong and the manager came. The manager completely ignored us and just said we'll replace all these dishes. He tried to keep it lowkey and didn't approach us to ask. He also didn't stop other people from taking food from nearby dishes. We had to find the manager and tell him that we don't want to eat anymore ourselves and all he said was "sorry about that". Horrible experience never go there unless you want to try your luck on finding bugs in your food. read more
