Wow - came in and the hostess asked us if we had been here before. I said no. She asked us to wait for a table. No problem. Then she raised her voice by saying 'sir stand over there!' She pointed and it was a mere 2 feet from the spot I was standing. Then the one who seated us - informed that they don't accept interac so instead I will use my Visa card that will charge them 7%. Then the food, so many items the same. Annoying server came 4 times to ask if all was okay. Dirty cutlery and a fake British accept from a Chinese dude. I felt like I was in an underground trap. Never again will I eat here. The host at the door did not make us feel welcome. A chip on her shoulder. I will be flipping the bird to her on my way out. read more

The food quality of this establishment has declined greatly over the last couple of years . The food is flavorless but plentiful. I'm assuming the flavors have to be kept to a minimum to please the large amounts of senior citizens and people who are used to eating bland, boxed, low quality foods. Never thought about Mandarin for takeout until moving from Toronto to Barrie and finding the Chinese takeout places seriously lacking. So so good! This have become a pretty regular thing for our family now. Food is super fresh and really easy on the wallet, especially if you have cash. The "plain soft noodles" are actually those delicious thin soy sauce enrobed wok noodles that everyone gets at the buffet. Black pepper steak has good heat and normal beef texture. The food is amazing I've been going since when I was a child, mainly for special events like birthday's, holidays etc. because it's so fancy inside but it is a casual restaurant too. They have so much variety from pizza, roast beef and chicken to traditional chinese food like fried rice, chow mein and chicken balls. I would say my favorite part is the dessert section, there's one section full of fruit, cakes and other sweets (including chocolate dipped strawberries mmm). If you've been to one Mandarin you've seen it all, that being said, this particular location was filled with friendly, knowledgeable staff that work together to ensure smooth service. I noticed that this location is very keen on customer service. There were a few items that I didn't like at the buffet (way too rare roast beef for one) but the sushi was great! (And I mean that!) and the staff made it pretty hard for you to not leave smiling. read more

Having lived in Barrie for a while when I was in school, one of my favourite things to do in the summer was order take-out from this location, and take it down to the waterfront. They've got a marina, so it's great to sit down there in summer and watch boats with a friend over food. Did this last week and the food is just as good! read more

Today my Family of 5 attended the restaurant and were most disappointed. We were jammed in a room of 4 tables 10, 2 tables of 20 and we were taken to a table of 10. The room was a fire hazard. The food disappointing and the Sushi was most disappointing. We left the waitress a 20% tip only because she was trying so hard and was so apologetic for the condition of the room and the way everyone was packed in. Unfortunately our last trip to the Mandarin. First let me start by saying the service was great. All of the meat dish's seem to be really over salted and the suckling pig was so salty it was not edible. The salads, sushi bar,side dish's and desserts were wonderful. The tables were very crowded together. I would not go back. read more

I LOVE MANDARIN. I go with my girlfriends once a month. The servers are incredibly polite and courteous. You feel welcomed as soon as you arrive. I would recommend going on a week day. Weekends can get very busy. The selection is great. Although I am not a seafood lover I do enjoy the sushi bar. My friends insist that they offer crab legs at all times. Ordered take out last night. We ordered four dishes and out of the four one was not bad. The beef and broccoli was ok, fried rice was dry, the almond so gai was not good, the gravy was tasteless and one very small pkg of sliced almonds for the order. We also order veg chow main which was tasteless as well. Even the fortune cookies seemed stale. This order was over forty dollars. Will not be ordering takeout again from Manadarin. read more

On Victoria Day, they decided to close earlier than advertised hours, and did not let us in. It took me 3 attempts to get a call back from the head office customer service, who told me Sorry... come again another time... and don't forget to call to check availability. Calling in advance may be a good idea. Coming back to this place - doubtful. read more

Ordered take out for Christmas Eve dinner. Dinner for 5 plus some extras. $86 with taxes. Understandably they are busy and we are told 1.5hrs at most. At the 1.5hrs mark we call, turns out they have our address incorrect. We correct them, they say 5-10mins more. Food arrives 15mins later and is completely cold. We were all very disappointed. We would have waited longer for warm food. I'm assuming quantity over quality rules here. I won't be ordering from them again. read more

Great Buffet. Fresh and appealing looking food. Great variety. Not like other buffets that look like they've been there for two days. Nice presentation too. Very busy place. You may have to stand in line for 20 minutes before getting seated especially on weekends. Snow crab legs on Fri, Sat, Sun is the main draw for sure. They are big and meaty. A beautiful thing and they bring out a fresh batch every half an hour. I could eat a wheelbarrow full. The legs totally justify the $25 per person which is a little high. In the past my take out/ delivery was good but the last time I ordered it was very disappointing. They usually make it fresh to go but I could tell they took 2 eggrolls that had been sitting on the buffet too long and gave them to me. They didn't give me soy sauce for the chicken fried rice and the chow mein was drowned in salt. I was very surprised because it was normally top notch. I don't know if I will order a dinner for 2 delivery again. Other than the last bad delivery experience I love the mandarin. Now i'm thinking about the crab legs again!!! lol read more

Consistently good and a super smooth operation. If you call ahead for a reservation there's not much of a wait even at the busiest of times, and after a brief visit from your server who talks up some special or other which I never completely understand, you're off to the buffet table within minutes. We've been here so many times over the years that we've got our routine down pretty much pat. Don't fill up too much on the salads and breads which are positioned so that they're the first items you see, and make your way to the hidden gems at the back, which include the grilled steak, chicken and pineapple skewers, roast beef (can be a little rare), and dumplings. The salad bar is extensive, the breads fresh and warm, and there's all sorts of appetizers such as carrot salad and deviled eggs, just make sure to pace yourself because there's lots more to come. There's a large variety of hot items, though they tend to be a bit on the bland side, pretty standard Chinese-American fare. The quality can be a bit inconsistent, but being such frequent visitors we probably notice that more then anyone else would. The dessert area is worth a visit in itself so save room! There's everything from Belgian-style waffles with blueberry sauce to sugar-free cheesecake. Service is fine although the used plates can at times pile up and I wish fresh cutlery could be provided a little more often. The constant refrain of "welcome to Mandarin" can be also a little annoying after a while. Attire is (very) casual and it's great for kids. read more
