TARAble! I've been enjoying great food here for over 25 yrs. Sadly today will be our last visit. We use to rave like madmen about Tara's food. Tonight was the worst Indian food we have ever had. Cold overcooked tandoori shrimp and chicken, overcooked flavourless naan cardboard, and mediocre lamb korma. Food ordered at 2:38pm with a pick up time of 5:30. Arrived at 5:32 to pick up, and they had nothing for me. Their ordering app "touch bistro dine" had sent me a confirmation email and #. The owner said I must've ordered from a different restaurant, or that my wife(who I said ordered) must have screwed up. When I was able to show him the confirmation email he said he'd get our order in next. I waited patiently in my car. It was ready at 6:20. For the price, they need to be doing more. WARNING: Do not eat here. Let me preface this by saying the quality of food here (which ranges from good to inedible) depends largely on whether or not the owners (two brothers) happen to be in the establishment at the time you order. If they're in, you might get decent food. If they're not, expect a downgraded version of their regular menu because, apparently, these two brothers can't be bothered to ensure a certain standard in their establishment if they're not present. Let me now get into why this second grade, watered-down version of an "Indian restaurant" should be avoided at all costs. We have on three separate occasions ordered their unsweetened butter chicken (we make it very clear over the phone that we don't want the sugary butter chicken) only to come home after picking up the order and see they've got the order wrong and given us the sweetened version of the dish. They've even, on one occasion, given our pickup order to wrong people and made my wife wait an additional 30 minutes while they re-made our order. On each of these occasions, we've not given them a hard time over these issues, allowed them to fix the order as needed and driven back to the location after driving home to pick our order up with no further requests of compensation/credit etc. We understand they're a small business and mistakes happen so have continued to provide them with business to help support local Barrie establishments. Tonight, on the fourth occurrence of them once again giving us the wrong version of the butter chicken order, I was willing again to drive back to the restaurant (we live across town) to get our food but this time asked for compensation off of one dish because this keeps on occurring and we've wasted time and money without complaint in the past simply trying to retrieve the right dish from the restaurant. While they (reluctantly) did so (after offering me "rice" as compensation), they began to yell at me, telling me they didn't want my business and to not order from them ever again. I was already lowering my standards eating at this pitiful place. And while neither brother unfortunately possesses the talent as chefs to compete with new and better Indian restaurants popping up in the area, they proven tonight that they neither have the business acumen, customer service skills, nor the decency as human beings to be considered a choice for us moving forward. I'd highly urge anyone reading this to not bother gambling their chances at getting a decent meal at an already high price. There are plenty of other (and much better) Indian restaurants in the area who deserve your business. Avoid this rubbish, nonsense establishment at all costs. read more

Tara is one of the restaurants that defined my love for Indian food. I've eaten at Tara on and off for many years. I stopped going several years ago, and from time to time I go back. Today I was back. The owner is very friendly, and the restaurant is very clean. The bhoona beef I had was good, but the butter chicken was yellow, bland, and made with white meat that was very dried out. I avoided many of the dishes out on the buffet because they were dried out. The Daal was a solid lump. They serve a buffet, but I usually go when they first open, and have showed up later in the afternoon. The food is consistent. The sauces are typically very thin. I will continue to go from time to time because I remember how great the food was at one point, and I keep hoping that it will go back to that way. read more

You have to go for the "slow" food here, like the stews fall off the bone tender, that sort of thing... lamb was fab, even if you don't like lamb, there's no gamey here. Great location over looking the lake. The restaurant had a nice decor and ambience. We were seated right away and given menus. At initial glance, I noticed that their prices for their main dishes were very expensive!! My friend and I ordered the butter chicken ($18), rice (4.90 x 2) and paratha ( $2-3). As we were waiting for our meal we noticed that they microwaved our rice before serving it to us, anything microwaved is not a good sign in my books! The food came and I was shocked at the size of the butter chicken for 18.00. I thought I was going to have leftover but nope!!! Good enough for two people. I've tasted better butter chicken. The rice was nothing special, the paratha also, nothing special! This place was a money grab but the view was nice. Online Ordering Doesn't work. Incompetent management has let the online ordering issue linger for weeks. The manager said they aren't receiving any orders from their website, including the ones that are pre-paid by credit card. You will receive two confirmations, one from their website when placing your order, then another email confirmation. However, that doesn't mean your order actually got sent as they aren't receiving those orders. Management even said they stopped answering their phone because of the volume of calls pertaining to that. read more

This was a find! For a city boy in close proximity to Little India, this was delicious. You could see the freshness and quality in every dish. I'm big on Naan and they will not disappoint. All our dishes were order "Medium" and they brought on some head sweats but not complaining. I like it when a culinary dish arouses the senses. But it was at my limit for the heat factor so judge accordingly to your own tastes. Service was great and nice décor/ambiance. Would definitely came back and recommend to others. read more

I have eaten, butter chicken all around barrie and Toronto and this was the worst butter chicken I have ever had, it is so greasy it's hard to get on the spoon and none will stick to the naan bread bread. I'm not a huge fan of Indian food, but when I can find some good dishes I am a happy guy. This place is considered to be one of the better Indian joints in town and I was pretty happy with the meal. The Naan bread was fresh and the butter chicken was sufficiently tasty. Meal prices were average for the quantity of food, as there was plenty in each dish to share with the table. One star is too generous! Do not order from this restaurant! We placed an $80+ order for delivery, specifying no coriander because of a food allergy. All the dishes came with coriander and it was too late in the evening to re-order. The restaurant promised that they would give us the dishes at no cost next time we ordered. Just called to place an order and were told that there is no way they were going to honour what they had promised. The man was rude and refused to accept that it was their fault in the first place. Terrible customer service. We will never order again from them and advise you do the same. There are other options in Barrie for good Indian food where you are actually treated like a valued customer. Take a pass on Tara's; you deserve better! read more

My girlfriend and I have been coming here this past year every few months and she really enjoyed the food as there are many vegan options and I thought the food was good. Tonight my girlfriend ordered delivery, the delivery was Onion Bahji and Tarka Dahl. The woman taking the order wrote her number down wrong and they tried to call back but didn't start making it because they couldn't contact her. Strange but okay. She then calls back and asks what's up and they say they'll start making the order and deliver it ASAP. Alright no worries! The food comes and she only receives the Onion Bahji. She then calls back in a very respectful tone (we both work in restaurants and understand mistakes happen) and informs them she only received the Onion Bahji and she would appreciate the rest be delivered. The man (owner) on the phone tells her she needs to "stop complaining" and that she needs to sort it out with the woman who took her order. The woman who originally took the order has a hard time with English sometimes and told my girlfriend that she only ordered the appetizer which wasn't true because they had to go over her order like five times on the phone to make sure they understood correctly. I was just really shocked to hear "you need to stop complaining" when bringing an issue to their attention. Maybe they were just having a bad day but you guys need to work on your customer service. read more

I've been to Tara before and enjoyed it well enough. I am not an expert on Indian food, although I do enjoy it very much. The prices are a little high. Biggest frustration from my last meal was that they didn't honour their WagJag coupon, which myself and a few friends brought for our dinner. There were some stipulations, which we acknowledged, but they wouldn't let us offer certain items off of the menu, although these rules weren't written anywhere on the WagJag deal. This was my friends' first time at Tara and they were disappointed in the prices and with the management's refusal to honour their own WagJag. They probably won't go back because of these reasons. I might, only because it's close and I'll eventually cave into my curry cravings and get over my anger from this evening. Just seemed to be a bit of a "trick" to get people in there. read more
