Green tea

This was a different experience for us but we liked it. Currently they only have their buffet open a couple days a week. What they had going on on a Monday evening was what they called bites. Smaller portions of a select menu for a low price. For 2.99-5.99 you could pick out dishes from soups, salads, spring rolls to noodles, rice and chicken, beef, shrimp and pork dishes. When we first walked in we were wowed by the vastness of the entry which sported decor along with water and fish and a long bar. Then stepping into the buffet area showed the largest buffet I have ever seen. There was no food out but I can imagine what it looks like when it is operating. We were there on a Monday night when they were offering "bites". With a limited menu there were appetizers, soups and salads and some dishes with beef, chicken, pork or seafood. Also to order was white or vegetable rice, noodles and a few desserts plus beverages. Prices were 1.99-5.99. We were given a sheet of menu items to check off what we wanted. Entrees we're about 1/2 the size as normal. We ordered green tea, spring rolls, chicken meatballs, vegetable rice, steamed vegetables and black pepper steak and General Taos Chicken and hot and sour soup. Everything we ordered was tasty and we even took out with us rice and vegetables and a spring roll. The General Taos was crunchy with the expected heat, the black pepper steak had large slices of thin cut tender pieces of steak in a pleasant sauce. The chicken rolls were a surprise as we were expecting ground chicken that was fried with a coating. We saw a table next to us order them so thought we would try them. But it was actual pieces of chicken coated and fried and they were perfect balls topped with a sweet sauce. The spring rolls were vegetable and they seemed mushy but tasted good and came with its own sweet/sour sauce. I added my steamed vegetables to my other dishes over the vegetable fried rice. I have Berber had fried rice like this before. It was a dark brown, maybe fro soy source? But it did not taste salty. It had mixed vegetables unit with a little heavier on the corn side. But we liked it. The hot and sour soup was a generous bowl sized and the tea also came in a generous size China tea pot with a little round cup. We were offered hot was clothes when we finished our meal. It has been a lot of years since that has been offered. I would give a 3 star in the food but the hospitality of the wait staff was exceptional with friendly and happy attitudes. If I lived there I would happily go back and would be interested in how their buffet looks.

If you like plain and bland, get ready for exceptionally plain and bland. Undercooked wontons with tasteless soup. Overcooked spring rolls, my vomiting child and a hostess who assumed she was overwhelmed by the excitement of a 60 something plus crowd. The only item that offered anything with flavour was the peppered beef. That was at least. 2.5. At least if they offered a buffet, I could have drowned my sorrows in gluttony. Just under $50 for a sad and pathetic meal that the server was happy to accept my tip and watch me leave. I'll never ever visit here again.

Amazing buffet style restaurant with such a great food selection and great service. I loved cucumber salad and beets so much. They have very delicious mashed potato and steak Such a huge selection of desserts and fruits. Everything is so fresh and so tasty. I wish there were such restaurants in Texas as well. Definitely a place to check out.

It's all frozen food what a sin. You would think a place like this with the kitchen they have someone could cook a dish.

We were highly satisfied with their fried food, specifically their tempuras (4/5) and scallops (5/5). Their bok choy was cooked well and had a delicate flavour of garlic (5/5). Their skewers were good. The beef and chicken dishes were tender and juicy (4/5). Our favourite was the garlic butter shrimp (5/5) and the torched salmon sushi (3.5/5). However, the sushi rice was too dense and overly sticky. The siu mai (2.5/5) was disappointing because the wrap was a bit dry. The sashimi cuts (1/5) were also disappointing. They weren't as firm as we hoped they would be. We also had dessert afterwards. The creme brulee was too sweet but they had a nice selection of ice cream flavours.

When the male waiter came by, he told us we shouldn't order so much at one time (we had over 40 items). But with four people at the table, that's really not excessive--especially since each single piece of sashimi counts as one item. I alone could easily finish a plate of 12 sashimi raw fish pieces (12 items). The portions were also very small. The soup came in a tiny teacup, and the fried tofu was about the size of dice (1 item count). On top of that, the service was unpleasant. The staff gave us attitude, as if we were eating too much--which is ridiculous for an All You Can Eat place. The food selection was quite limited too. Many dishes tasted the same, especially the beef items. And several popular Japanese choices were missing--no grilled eel sushi, no tobiko, no short ribs, and no grilled squid for lunch. These are all regular lunch items if you go AYCE restaurant in Toronto. We also received dishes we didn't order, and when informing the waiter they were obviously not very happy and keep frowning Overall, this was the most disappointing AYCE experience we've ever had. Next time we'll definitely go to Mandarin instead--it's much better value and service.

It's our first time here at Tian Ya BBQ which is a decent Korean-style AYCE BBQ restaurant in Barrie. We usually go to ones in Markham and/or North York. Their fried spring rolls and scallops (4/5) were delicious with a good crisp on the outside, giving you a crunch with every bite. The spring rolls could use some more filling. The Volcano Roll was enjoyable (3.5/5). We liked how they had fried batter on the outside to elevate the texture of the dish. The cream cheese was a delight. The portions were big. The actual Korean-style BBQ was okay (3/5). The kimchi was a bit salty for us. We were hoping it would have more of the tangy, fermented taste to it as well. We liked that it was crunchy and tasted fresh. Their lettuce was also fresh. They did use iceberg lettuce instead of romaine which was different from what we regularly have at other places. We had pork, beef, beef short ribs and squid for grilling. Both the pork and beef were thinly sliced and tender. The beef short ribs were marinated well. Maybe a bit more sesame oil, garlic and ginger to the marinade mixture would really help bring out the sweetness and the umami of the meat. The cuts were okay; the meats could have been balanced with some fat/marbling to keep them juicy. We were also looking to have some ssamjang (fermented soybean paste) and sesame oil with salt to go with the meat. Overall, an okay place to go for AYCE Korean BBQ in Barrie.
