I had been wanting a custom ring designed using the diamonds from my original engagement and wedding ring (both were kindly gifted 10 years ago my extended family, but not my personal style) , as well as stones from family gifted jewelry that I couldn't wear. I initially went to a standard jeweler to get a custom quote and was told it would start at $2.5k AND they would only use the large stone because the others were "too small." I had a family member who worked with Leo years ago, and my sister reminded me about custom work she did for her as well and recommended I reach out to him and see what he could do. Leo was very prompt in answering my call, said he would likely be able to use my stones was and excited about working together. When we got together I brought all my jewelry I wanted to either use or trade, showed him pictures of a few rings I liked, and talked about the styles I liked. He sketched out a design that we then edited a bit together, and then a week or so later sent the mock up for me to approve. After that it took about 3 more weeks for the ring to be ready. The actual ring is stunning, comfortable, and such a special and unique piece. I opted to wear just this is one ring as a sort of joint wedding/engagement ring rather than have two rings since it's pretty substantial on its own. I recently tried to find a jeweler in the Burbank area that would do ring sizing for a sterling silver ring. I called several places and either the people on the phone were rude and said they didn't resize for sterling silver, or they were just flat out rude. I looked on yelp and saw that Mandarin Gems had really great reviews so I gave them a call. I spoke to Emily on the phone and she was extremely nice. She told me they could in fact resize sterling silver and it would take about a week. I went in, filled out the paper, and was on my way. Exactly one week from the time of drop off my ring was ready and fits perfect. Leo was there when I picked it up and he was very very nice! I worked exclusively with Leo. I knew almost zero when it came to selecting engagement rings, but he took the time to walk me through the diamond-selection process, and how to best set it. He initially produced some diamonds for me, but when I requested ones with specifications he didn't carry in store, he made it a priority to find several diamonds of those specifications until we found the perfect one. He never pressured me into purchasing anything I wasn't comfortable with and always checked in with via text or phone call to make sure I was ok with every step in the process. He was very honest throughout the diamond selection process - letting me know where the defects/imperfections were, why a diamond received the rating it got, and always reminding me to think in the context of the finished product. Took 1-2 weeks to set it, and he always provided text updates including the computer generated model and ETAs for completion. He always tried to accommodate my work schedule and was very responsive when I had any questions. Overall I ended up with an amazing ring for a fair price. From the beginning he gave me his "bottom-line" price and we spent the least of our time discussing cost. Bought an engagement ring from Leo. Here is my experience: I had an old ring that I wanted to sell and called around for appraisals. When I called Mandarin Gems, Leo said that I can come in for an appraisal. I did not know anything about diamonds before I came in. He showed me the diamond under a microscope and schooled me on everything I need to know about diamonds. I never felt pressured into buying anything from him. After shopping around and getting estimates on diamond rings, I ended up coming to Leo to buy a ring. He showed me what he had to offer and also other diamonds he could get his hands on. After visiting Leo many times, we finally found one within my price range but it was with another jeweler in NY. When I decided to pull the trigger, we found out that the diamond was unavailable. I was in shock, the perfect diamond wasn't available. After a few days, Leo called me and said he was able to get his hands on the diamond. Once he told me that, I quickly told him to get it so that I can buy it. So he did. The entire process with Leo, I tried negotiating prices but Leo never appeared bothered or turned off. I found myself returning to Mandarin Gems more than any of them. They seemed very polite and knowledgeable and I just felt good with them. Almost all of the other places didn't give me near the feeling I got from this place. I just felt like I couldn't get an honest answer anywhere else, and I could see them squirm when I asked "the hard questions". Anyway, I found a gold ring I really liked at Mandarin, and the owner gave me a really great price, quite honestly a good bit better than what I was planning to offer, which really surprised me. Of course I bought it right away. I am by far not anything near made of money, but I knew I wanted to spend a $1,000 or 2 and I wanted to get a few pieces, as I had next to nothing to begin with. I wanted to get one more ring and maybe a bracelet or necklace. I ended up finding a ring at another store that I bought which ended up being 10k when it was sold as 14k! I was shocked and rushed back to the store. They claimed it was an accident and did give me my money back, so I will go ahead and believe they didn't do it on purpose, but I did realize at that point that I need to be much more careful. I started pricing these stores against each other, comparing gold weights, diamond weights and types, etc. and I have to say, each and every time Mandarin came out on top. I ended up buying two gold bracelets from them after extensive research and I can say I got very good deals. While I don't plan on being a walking gold jewelery display, when I am ready to get another piece I know exactly where I will go. I have asked the hard questions, got straight honest answers, and despite asking quite a bit, they were completely polite and happy to answer my questions. They took the time to pull out the microscope and teach me how to look at diamonds, etc. when they had no idea I was going to be buying a few pieces from them. Awesome service, great diamond!! Went to zales right across the hall and they tried to sell me this overpriced piece of junk. Mandarin is custom and higher quality diamonds for cheaper than those big chain stores. He even showed me my diamond in a microscope and explained what grade it was. Excellent service. Had my wedding ring set soldered together and another ring repaired. The rings were ready two days earlier than we were told they would be. They let us look through the microscope at the diamond on my wedding ring to see the laser-inscribed number and the inclusion. We looked when we dropped it off and when we picked it up to verify its identity. The repaired ring and the soldered wedding set both came out beautifully. Excellent service and repair on my platinum wedding ring. Another jeweler had broken my setting while cleaning it and diamonds had fallen out. The ring needed laser soldering and I read the reviews on this and decided to try them out. Emily was very helpful and my ring was repaired perfectly and the price was totally reasonable. I was concerned about leaving my diamond ring anywhere but their diamond mapping was perfect to ensure I was given back the diamond that I left them with. My most recent purchases from Mandarin Gems are two lovely rings, one of which I had custom made. I am extremely pleased with both purchases. The first ring is a white gold ring with three rows of diamonds. To some people, it may look like an engagement ring, but I treat it as my special occasion ring. It's too nice for every day wear, but diamonds are classic, sturdy, and a woman can never go wrong with them. Again, I know I will have this ring for the rest of my life, and I will have no regrets about the purchase. The other ring was one I had been planning to have made since the fall of 2009, and I spent the next couple of years just thinking about the design and letting my ideas percolate. I made a few sketches when the time came to have the ring made, and then I sat down with Leo to discuss the shade of gold and the gems or stones to be used. Leo then made a perfect mold for the ring based on my design concept. With a custom made jewelry piece, Mandarin Gems will work with you for as long it takes until the design is the way you like it. That means that we continued to make a couple more molds of the ring until I was satisfied. After that, the mold was used to make the gold ring, and then Leo and I chose the colors of the stones and their arrangement. This is a very unique and special experience, for those of you who have never had something custom made. This ring is of special significance to me, and it's design and meaning are symbolic. Mandarin Gems will work with you should you have such a need for a special piece of jewelry. Once the jewelry item is made, the mold is destroyed; it will never be duplicated or made again by them. This was extremely important to me, personally, as I wanted something one-of-a-kind and highly personal in nature. Had a really quick visit here today with my fiance to look for matching wedding bands for my engagement ring. We also walked to Zale's next door and found the quality of Mandarin Gems wedding bands to be of better quality, despite the smaller selection. The man working there did not pressure us to buy a ring at all and but was very friendly. Hope he is able to keep the business alive, as it is always empty when we walk by!
