Take this review with a grain of salt for many reasons, and considering that I could not rate this restaurant above a 4. We have been familiar with the area for years, as my father-in-law lived 3 minutes away, and recently we realized this was his go-to carryout. After 3 visits, I can say it's one of the best in the DMV, thanks to its flavor and food choices. You will find Japanese options like sushi, American-Chinese dishes like orange chicken, similar dishes, and Cantonese food like roast duck, Hong Kong-style noodle soups, and whole fish. They are family-owned and operated. Every time we come, the elder father is always gracious and provides excellent service. The restaurant is always quiet; you can hear conversations in the back, and as customers arrive to pick up their orders, we haven't witnessed any negative interactions. Customers are always happy with their food, and the staff say thank you. The only negative is the space. The building itself is older and outdated. In the summer, it is hot, and now in the winter, there is no heat. They have found ways to make it work, like space heaters on each table, but it can still get uncomfortable if you are dining in. The back area near the bathroom and the bathroom itself need a thorough cleaning. To me, it's a turnoff; it doesn't affect the food, but it does affect the dine-in experience. The owner here is genuinely nice, and I really enjoyed speaking with him and hearing about his time in the area, but unfortunately the food was a huge disappointment. I ordered the shrimp and broccoli combo, which came with an egg drop soup and a shrimp roll. Sadly, none of it was edible for me and I ended up having to throw the entire meal away. The rice was undercooked and completely lacked flavor. The shrimp and broccoli itself had an unusual color, a sticky consistency, and a sauce with a taste I have never experienced with Chinese food before. The food is awful. We ordered combination fried rice, sweet and sour chicken, chicken with mixed vegetables, wonton soup and crab rangoon and a California roll. We wanted to try a variety of things. Everything was borderline inedible. The rice tastes burnt like it was cooked on a dirty skillet. The sweet and sour chicken and rangoons were both dry and tasted old. The chicken with mixed vegetables was mushy and gritty. The soup was extremely salty and the sushi looked and tasted worse than what you'd get at a grocery store. I guess the only silver lining is we didn't get sick from the small amount of food we did eat. It's very surprising to me that this place is still open. This use to be my favorite place for hot and sour soup but, not anymore. Under Mr. and Mrs. Kim, the soup use to be delicious but now it hardly has any tofu in it. I've been having lunch there every time I visit that area of Maryland & the food has consistently been good, plentiful & decently priced. I've had their duck (excellent), several shrimp dishes, triple delight soup (full meal in a bowl of broth). Spring rolls are hot & tasty, wonton soup is almost enough for a meal. The service is excellent, probably due to the fact that I have yet to see more than a couple of tables in use. I assume they stay in business due to take-out because I always see people coming & going & the phone ringing constantly with orders. So, I took one out of the container and proceeded to smush it with a fork. The shrimp went right through the fork. I'm not sure what causes shrimp to get that texture. I threw the whole container in the trash. The orange chicken also had a good flavor. Most of the sauce spilled in the bag due to the type of containers used. The food is very good here. I usually order for pick up and I also have eaten in. It's currently the only Chinese restaurant in my contacts and has been my go-to for more than 20 years. I would be sad to lose them. Service-oriented and quite friendly staff at the desk. Crab Ragoons, also stuffed and crispy, it was nice to hear the Won Ton wrapper crunch and have plenty of filling.
