CARIBE Restaurant - Schenectady, NY…read more I've had the chance to visit CARIBE twice now, and both times were for birthday celebrations. This is a cute Caribbean/Dominican restaurant with a casual order-at-the-counter setup and dine in- gives off a welcoming island vibe. The restaurant was clean, colorful, and full of Dominican flair. Both visits started with the Dominican Appetizer Platter, which in my opinion is perfect for sharing between 2-3 people depending on how hungry everyone is. It comes loaded with sweet plantains, crispy fried plantains, chicharrón, fried chicken tenders, fried cheese, salami, tostones, and French fries. If you're a fry lover, don't skip these! On my first visit, we ordered the pork chops and the pernil. The pernil was delicious--juicy, flavorful, and with the crispy top!! that my friend absolutely loved. The second time around, we both went with steak. I ordered the Bistec Salteado (sautéed steak) medium, while my friend ordered the grilled steak. Unfortunately, my steak came out well done. When I mentioned it, I was told that's how it's traditionally prepared Dominican-style. Needless to say, I wasn't happy and ended up not eating much of it. I did try my friend's grilled steak, and it was much better (for my taste). The birthday girl ordered the seafood rice and really enjoyed it. It was packed with seafood--definitely a dish for seafood lovers! For her birthday she got a choice of dessert and got the Flan- and a island girly her self she critiqued and loved!! Next time I'm in the area, I think I'll skip the entrées and order à la carte so I can sample more of the sides and appetizers. Overall, the food was good, the portions were generous, and the atmosphere was welcoming. The steak was a miss for me, but everything else was enjoyable enough that I'd return to try more of the menu.

The advertising sign at the front of the restaurant highlights pupuseria and Latino food. OK,…read morethat's what I ordered. Pupusa - El Salvadorian specialty - griddled corn masa cake. Other ingredients like cheese, beans, greens, and/or meats are mixed into the masa and cooked on a flattop until crisp on the outside. Since the "mixins" are varied, these are made to order. I had a Revuelta (queso, chicharron, beans) and a queso loroco (flower bud of a vine which grows in Central America). The tastiest portion for me were the almost burnt caramelized cheese bits on the outside of the pupusa. Honestly, the loroco was more of a textural component rather than a taste. It seemed mild. I'm sure they were canned. I don't think loroco grows around this area. The pupusas were served with a cabbage slaw (curtido) and a light tomato salsa. Pernil - a marinated pork shoulder, slow roasted until tender then usually blasted with high heat to render crispy skin (cuero). Slow roasted tender pork - yes. Rendered crispy skin - no. The generous portions of yellow rice and refried black beans rounded out the meal. One thing I noticed, the refried beans had a very slight sour note, vinegar or age, I don't know. I still ate them. No ill effects. Conclusion: I'd go again.

The menu features all the different types of cuisine you would expect in a Peruvian restaurant: Peruvian/Hispanic, stir-fries, and pasta dishes. Fish also features very heavily on the menu, which of course means many ceviche options too. We started with roasted corn nuts brought to our table, followed by beverages of limeade and purple corn beverage which was mildly sweet with cinnamon added. Our entrees were fairly simple, a beef stir-fry with fried rice, and grilled chicken on french fries with rice and salad. These came out quickly. The portions were more than adequate, and my simple side salad was better than similar side salads I've gotten at fancier restaurants. Small bottles of yellow and red sauces are provided to spice up your meal: yellow for fairly spicy, and red for REALLY spicy. For me, the yellow sauce was perfect for my chicken and my rice. Meals here seem like dishes you would have visiting family and friends in Peru, and I would not be surprised if Mi Bandera already has a loyal set of customers they would consider family and friends.

We ordered a large size pernil (roast pork) and pollo guisado (stewed chicken) with arroz amarillo (yellow rice with pigeon peas). First of all the large size is massive and I would probably order a small next time. The food was outstanding, not quite as good as I've had but absolutely delicious. The rice was cooked perfectly and the red beans were really well seasoned. They had alcapurrias on the menu but were out when we were there so we got a beef empanada instead. The empanada was good but a little greasy. The place is really tiny, only a couple of tables so it's more of a to-go place. We wouldn't have stayed anyway because the music was so loud I felt like I was at a dance party rather than a restaurant. The man who served us was super nice and made sure that we were well taken care of. I'll definitely go back and try the pepper steak and pork chops. Maybe they'll have alcapurrias when I return.

There were several young folks hanging out in front of the place, most ordering those cool looking shake drinks. I was greeted by staff after entering and trying to decide what I wanted for food. They also offer hot foods ready to serve & eat such as stewed chicken, pepper steak, rice, beans, and veggies. They accept cash, but no credit cards (Venmo and Apple Pay accepted). I noticed they offer small and large size dinners and I decided on a small dinner since the large size was huge. I chose Pepper Steak with white rice and beans, which came out to $7 total, nicely packed good into a cleared plastic sandwich size box. The food was really good with very tender pieces of stewed seasoned beef steak with potatoes, soft white rice and red beans. The small size was definitely just enough food to be full.

They didn't have everything on the menu when we went and honestly that's okay, because just about everything looked and smelled good. It seems like someone's aunty is just cranking out whatever she does well and you've got to appreciate that. We got the pork dinners which come with salad, rice and beans. The rice was on point. The pork was delicious too and filled with flavor. Some other reviewers suggested that the meats can be dry. This was our experience, but it's likely how the food is being stored and not how it's prepared. It was still good and a decent bang for your buck, so check it out. We also enjoyed beef empanadas that were served hot and crispy with tons of juicy meat inside. The owners were really friendly and outgoing, joking and being playful with customers. It makes for a welcoming environment. We will go back.

After I placed an order for 2 empanadas, she pointed to a blackboard I had missed to let me know I could convert that to a lunch special which included a small salad and a lemonade, which I did. For a salad that, as far as I could tell was just lettuce, shredded carrot and dressing it was quite tasty, and I wonder what their dressing is. The lemonade was mango infused. I do not like overly sweet lemonade, and this had very little of the overt sweetness you might get elsewhere - all flavor. The empanadas are well made. Of the ones I tried today, I preferred the chorizo and cheese, which had a taste and texture of meaty and gooey. I had expected the chicken in the other empanada to be a bit firmer, until I remembered that it is more of a chicken stew. Both were very good, and I enjoyed both of the sauces that came with them. It's getting tougher and tougher to come to Galleria 7 and know what I want to get, all the choices are so tempting.
