I was on the hunt for canelé, and man was Mamie Clafoutis worth the bus ride and walk. The canelé had a crisp exterior and delicious, spongey, honey like interior. Small but mighty. A must try French pastry. We also got a small cappuccino (deliciously milky). Unfortunately the upstairs seating was closed, but we savored our drink and pastry walking back. The cashier was very patient with me as I stumbled through my French - don't get me wrong, they speak English as well, I just felt like I should make an effort! The smell of freshly baked bread enticed me to walk in , and I didn't regret it. This Jewish bakery and cafe had an entrancing choice of treats on display, with the rustic chalk on blackboard menu of the drinks confirming my stay here. I decided , after much deliberation, to go for the aptly named 'Oh Mon dieu' croissant, and a cappuccino. And it's true, as soon as I took my very first bite of the croissant , my expression matched the name perfectly. The weight of the croissant is insane, it's completely packed full of choclatey almond goodness. The coffee was a nice compliment with it, however the real star of the show in this cafe is definitely the OMD. With a rustic interior surrounded by hanging lights and comfy seats, you'll spend a few hours in Mamie Clafoutis. I certainly can't wait for my next venture here! That's right... I don't know what to say other than that in 27 years of living in New York we just have nothing that comes close to this sorcery. These croissants are comically flaky, like you have to eat them outside, flaky. When I was a kid, my parents used to visit Montreal after we moved away and they would get huge bags of croissants at a bakery in Pointe Claire that I'm not even sure exists anymore. I like educating myself about local pastry shops, I don't get out much so when my food blogger friend introduced me go Mamie Clafoutis because we were looking for a dessert shop, this was perfect. It looks like a little French bakery in the heart of Montreal. The display had me drooling that I had to order 4 desserts to try out. The croissants were particularly calling to me but I stuck to dessert. The prices are not cheap, but you're paying for the experience. We sat upstairs, I was nostalgic as I felt like I was a student again studying for my finals in a old fashioned café. My favourite was the lemon meringue tart! I couldn't finish the rest. I was in Outremont and was looking for a quiet place to read. This place is definitely the BEST coffee shop in Outremont to get some work done or even meet friends. They have the cutest, homely 'messy attic vibe' seating area upstairs with mismatched furniture, an old piano, comfy sofas and reliable WIFI. I spent a good 4 hours there and loved it. I had a Mocha which was OK but I would probably go elsewhere for my hot drinks. As for the pastries, I ordered the 'Oh Mon Dieu' croissant (as advised by all the good reviews) and it really is worth the hype! The verdict was in an hour later: Oh-mon-dieu kills it, classic viennoiserie is good, clafoutis aux pommes was so-so. They have a very nicely arranged coffee room on the second floor, with wifi, deep leather armchairs and a few tables in case you really need to work. It doesn't get much better than this. After having lived in France, this place is just as good as anything you'll find there. What's more, it's at least 30% cheaper than comparable places in Toronto (where I live). I shared a sandwiche classique, a croissant aux amandes, a croissant au fromage and a quiche au salmon, and I wouldn't have changed a thing about any them. Have you tried "OH MY GOD"? Yeah right, that's the name of one of their pastries. It's a decadent croissant with a huge load of chocolate... I asked the nice person that was taking care of my order about the name, and he said that they called it that way because when you take a bite from it, all you can say is "Oh My God!", so I tested it and brought some to my husband. It's true!!! I have visited this café twice: once to take out some olive fougasses (yum yum yum bread with olives inside), Oh My God croissants and a sandwich (they make nice vegetarian ones, very fresh and tasty). The second time around I was with my husband and we really liked the appartment style, many couches, a piano in the middle... And nice pastries.
