Everyone raves about their viennoiseries but their cakes are also excellent! We tried the following small cakes: passion fruit mousse cake, the Cassiopée, Gargamel and lemon meringue. The passion fruit mousse cake was my favorite, the passion fruit flavor was bright and bold. A close second was the Cassiopée, loved the layer of cassis and apple. From fine chocolates and French pastries, to cakes and gelato, this place has your sweet cravings covered from breakfast to dessert and everything in between. Oh, and did I mention, everything is homemade! Although I've passed by a million times, it took me some time to actually step inside. I think the "we do it all" approach didn't really appeal to me and I feared it might mean everything would be pretty average. I'm happy to say I was wrong, and this place seems to master everything I've tried so far. Fous Desserts is a small little cafe that offers coffee beverages, individual cakes, truffles, as well as pastries. I really liked that they had a small little chocolate pig that was all wrapped up, ready to be picked up by someone :P I bought an almond croissant and a cheese croissant, both tucked in their individual bags - I appreciated this, as I did not have to worry about the sticky almonds sticking to the cheese croissant! The cheese croissant was forgettable, as the cheese was a bit too pungent; however, the almond croissant was quite delicious, as it had this lovely honey-like glaze that gave the croissant a nice little crisp; there were also a nice amount of almonds on top. Staff were super friendly, and there were some seats available for you to do some work or to enjoy your treat. When in Montreal we always try to venture away from downtown and Old Town to try local bakeries. This place was getting some good reviews so we made the drive. It is our new favorite spot! The croissants were all amazing. We had some plain, some almond and some chocolate. All were the best of the trip and our entire group agreed. The coffee was wonderful. And they make several different hot chocolates that the kids thought was great. Staff was friendly and patient as we made our decisions. The woman helping us even chatted with my 12 year old who is learning French once she learned we were from out of town and she was practicing her French. Very sweet of her. I have no doubt this place will do well and will be there when we return. We will definitely visit it again. Probably more than once next trip. read more

Do you know people who only eat chocolate desserts? This place is for them. But, Fous Desserts is not just for them. Opened by an acclaimed chocolatier (Franck Dury-Pavet), you can see their excellence in all things chocolate: truffles, hot chocolate, chocolate croissant, chocolate cakes and pastries (particularly the Croquant, Gargamel, and Zelmir) gelato and sorbet... you get the picture. My favorite chocolate baked good here seemed almost half-cooked. A chocolate cake made from 70% concentrated chocolate (Guanaja, Honduras) low in cocoa butter with a liquid center of Madagascar chocolate, much like in a molten chocolate cake. Honestly, if you see the picture, I did not heat it up. I'd waited for a few minutes after eating my butter croissant and finishing coffee, thinking I'll take it to go. After second thoughts (happens 99% of the time), I thought might as well take a bite. I never expected the river of chocolate to start flowing as I ate it with my fingers (the server hadn't been able to describe it properly to me in English, she'd let me believe it was a soft brownie like cake). So, I don't normally post pix that are pure food porn, but you can check this one out. Moving from porn to love, the Cri d'amour (cry of love) with foam and hibiscus jelly, raspberry, rose and Pistachio financier presented a gamut of flavors (from sweet to tart to nutty and berry) and textures (foam, jelly, mousse, financier, nuts) - the works. It was an ambitious feat to pull off in terms of describing the complexity of love, but full marks to the pastry chef for pulling it off! I mentioned the chocolate croissant above, but didn't get to try it. Instead opting for the butter croissant that makes the lists for best croissant in Montreal on an annual basis. Even though the croissant wasn't warm (that's pretty normal now even in Paris, unless you're really lucky), it was executed as well as it could be. Fous Desserts also had one of the best eclairs I've had: Pistachio. Even though I wasn't a fan of the color, but understand the customer expectations that need to be met, I liked the balance between nuttiness and sweet. So, I didn't take any piece from the extensive chocolate ganache collection or truffles back with me, but I did take to the hotel a few almond tuiles (excellent) and Sablés Suisses (chocolate, vanilla, cannelle). The sablés were my only disappointment from the extensive sampling and they paled in flavor intensity compared to other comparable sablés that I had from other top notch bakeries in Montreal. My fiancé and I were scouting for the best croissant in Montreal and aren't we glad that we came to Fous Desserts! I wish we found it earlier so we can come everyday during our short trip in Montreal. On our first day, we tried their almond croissant and plain butter croissant. The almond croissant was amazing in flavours and buttery texture. I'm usually not a almond croissant fan because of the extract after taste, but this one had none. It was just awesomely good! The butter croissant that my fiancé had was good but he wished it was fresh right out from the oven, even though it was baked on the same day. On our second day (and sadly last day), we ordered their breakfast sandwiches with a side of greens. My fiancé had their asparagus, bacon and poached egg and he loved it. The asparagus was perfectly cooked and still had a bit of a crunch, and the runny yolks from the poached egg and the fresh buttery croissant was to die for! I had the smoked salmon with mascarpone cheese, it was so very good. The mascarpone spread was delicious and light, and again the croissant sealed the deal! I wished we discovered this place earlier so we could come everyday. The service was great and friendly (bilingual staff). We will be back whenever we're in town!! This was my favorite dessert spot in all of Montreal! We tried a variety of pastries, including a regular croissant, an almond croissant, and the gargamel. You could tell how fresh the ingredients were with every bite and we devoured everything! I had a traditional matcha tea with my dessert. I was delighted that they even had this on the menu and that they executed it very well. High grade matcha, perfectly whisked. My only regret is not trying their specialty chocolates! BEST DESSERTS IN MONTREAL! Amazing! Fous dessert never fails to impress me. It is their Japanese dessert months so they have several unique cakes that use ingredients commonly found in Japan. I wanted to try all of them but ended up only trying the matcha cake. It was very delicious, the flavours busted in my mouth. I took the afternoon tea option with a cup of Japanese tea as well for a total of $8. It was a great compliment to the cake. The cake was neither too dense or too light, just the right texture and moistness. However, I would prefer it without the chocolate filling but overall, the cake was pretty amazing already. I also took a box of chocolate. Oh man, they take every single product seriously. I am not really a chocolate person but I ate the whole box (9) in a day. Each one was unique and good tasting. I wanted to try this place after hearing about their delicious croissants. It is a little shop that is not in the main boutique-y drag of Laurier street. There is not an obvious big sign above it and it looks unassuming and not all touristy. Inside is so nice and cute and smelled so good! There are lots of chocolates as well as baked goods. They are so nice and friendly here and I got some things to try. The croissant is certainly very buttery and flakey. It is not as big as some places, but that doesn't bother me at all. It just means I can eat more of the other stuff/less calories. I actually just ate it out of the bag as soon as I left because it smelled so good and I was hungry. Definitely worth checking out! WOW this is simply a WOW place. This place is one of those small jams that only locals know about and tourist dream about. The coffee is great but people dont come here for the coffee they come here for the pastries that were touched by angels. I'm only reviewing the chocolate truffles in this review. I consider myself a chocolate connoisseur. When I travel (abroad or at home in the states), I sample the local artisan chocolates everywhere I go. Specifically, I look for a chocolatier who makes fresh truffles, who knows how to do dark chocolate (it should never be bitter and should never be over-sweetened or over-powered with vanilla, and who is creative and careful with natural flavors. The chocolate is a wonderful blend of flavors and the dark chocolate is neither bitter nor over-sweetened. The ganache is buttery and mild, and the chocolate itself is delicate. I enjoyed the black sesame seed truffle the most but was disappointed in the matcha truffle. Other chocolatiers incorporate the matcha into the ganache. This truffle was coated in matcha -- which made it beautiful. Flavor-wise, I felt the matcha was too separated from the chocolate. Other flavors here are mild but not as exciting as what I found in the sesame truffle. The other desserts in the shop looked phenomenal, and I look forward to trying them on a return trip to Montreal. read more

I like their croissants, considered by some the best in the city and they are pretty damn good. Make sure to eat on and for a second consider you are in Montréal - not France. Now for the rest of the sweets, what a great selection of options from desserts to more breaded goodness but almost half of the store is dedicated to their chocolate. Had a croissant and hot chocolate breakfast there recently. The croissants were acceptable but no more. The texture was ok but the taste was very bland. The hot chocolate, that they make with Valrona melted chocolate, was inconsistent. Mine was very weak tasting but my partner's was excellent. This is a cute little shop serving baked goods (bread, pastries, croissant etc as well as house made chocolates, cookies and Nougat , as well as coffee). The location is very cute and cozy and the staff was so friendly. It smells great as soon as you walk in. I had their almond croissant which was so fresh and was to die for and a cappuccino (barista coffee beans) , equally delicious! The pricing was fair , this is a great place to enjoy a relaxing coffee and pastry with a friend, loved one or date. I can't believe I've never written a review on this place, even though I've been there 2-3 times each time I've visited Montreal. In my opinion, they have the best chocolate croissants! Their almond croissants are really good too. It was actually what initially attracted me to this place, but the last time I had both croissants, I liked the chocolate one slightly more. I was craving for some pastries and was able to make it here just 15 minutes before closing time. Sadly I am allergic to almonds, and a lot of yummy creations contained almonds. So I opted for this delicious chocolate raspberry delight. The first bite.... Yum! It wasn't overly sweet, there was enough raspberry to offset the bitterness of the chocolate but also light enough that it doesn't weigh heavily in for stomach. Nothing beats walking down the street eating a croissant or sandwich. It's sheer heaven. I pulled the croissant from Fous Desserts out of its wax paper bag and I slowly took a bite. My nostrils flared as I paused to get my mind around what I was experiencing. Flaky, light texture, yet moelleux, soft. The butter. Was. Evident. But not like buttery. I don't know how to explain it. It was as if butter had been raised to an angelic state and gently blessed this croissant with its essence. There is no other way to describe it. This croissant was perfect. So I know that I said that comparing Montreal and Paris was useless, but this fucking croissant was better than even the ones I've had in Paris. For one thing, it was bigger. Not much bigger, but maybe 5% bigger. There was more exquisiteness to enjoy. But never had I tasted something that harmonized the delightful savory/sweet balance of the croissant so perfectly. There is a God after all. A butter God, or a pastry God perhaps. The name does not lie. It is no exaggeration, nor a coincidence. I couldn't think of a more appropriate and deserving name for this bakery. They live up to their moniker. Crazy desserts indeed. But if you too tried their croissant-aux-amandes-et-chocolat, you'd more than just understand, you'd be committing the same abhorrent actions as I. You can't but capitulate to the yearnings of your stomach sometimes, and it cries shamelessly for fous desserts and Mamie clafoutis. The only two I approve of, out of the tens and thousands I've entertained in Montreal. They offer THE FATTEST CROISSANTS I've ever had, TRUST ME when I say: I've eaten more croissants than the breaths I took in my lifetime. They're not the largest, just the fattest. They sprinkle a GENEROUS helping of almond slices on the croissants, and load it with their almond filling, which resembles a custard more than a paste, and they use untempered milk chocolate opposed to the typical tempered dark/semi-sweet chocolates....so it's not only sweeter and milkier, but it is smoother and malleable. Like buttta! They also have a chocolatier in the back teasing the patrons with his bucket of couverture chocolate. I sat there gobbling down my third treat staring him down like his hands might've been fourth. If you love almond croissants, this is a must!
