Tongue Tacos 9-16-2017
Christina J.

A solid 3.5 stars but I'm rounding up to 4 because of the excellent customer service me & my son received from the 2 counter girls & the cook who I am assuming is the owner also. Plus it's a pretty new business. Kinks have to be worked out. To be expected. The Good: 1. Sons steak burrito was delicious he said. Henceforth no pic. He devoured it. Filled with steak & tightly rolled. 2. They have tongue tacos. Yay! 3. My Steak Nachos were plentiful. The steak was seasoned perfectly to my taste preference. Lots of cheese sauce, beans & jalapeños. The Not So Good But Easily Remedied: 1. Tongue tacos had no flavor & were not tender enough. 2. No sauce was given for Burrito or Nachos just a very small container of sour cream. 3. The green & red sauce given for my tacos were TINY. If I didn't get both I wouldn't have enough for both tacos. Plus both sauces lacked flavor. The packets of Cholula hot sauce saved them. Soooo would I go back? Hell yeah! The steak Nachos & Burrito were delicious. I'd like to see how the pork & shrimp tastes. Plus the owner & staff were amazingly accommodating so I know to ask for more sauce next trip. Overall a win in my book. I hope they stick around. 9-16-2017

Been here a couple of times and find the food tasteful, fresh, and well prepared. Staff is friendly.

I saw this place from the train platform and knew I'd have to come back to try it. It's run by a really nice couple making wholesome food. I tend to have low expectations in Suffolk County when it comes to anything other than pizza or bagels, so I had my doubts about this place. But I was pleasantly surprised. I got three tacos. I always get lengua and al pastor when I try a new taco place and I couldn't resist getting a chorizo taco as well. While a far cry from what you'd get in Queens or in Southern California, the tacos were pretty good for this area. There was a generous portion of tongue, although the lengua flavor was minimal and it was less tender than I'm used to. A little lime helped bring out the flavor. The al pastor was decent, but was way too salty. It got so salty that I couldn't finish the taco. I also prefer the pineapple being a thin slice added on top instead of diced and cooked in, but that's just a preference. The pineapple flavor became too pronounced and covered the flavor of the pork. The chorizo taco was a total miss for me. The filling was not chorizo. It was an Americanized chorizo sausage link cut up into cubes. It was one of the stranger tacos I've ever had. I expect chorizo to be almost like ground meat, with some grease and a lot of flavor. This "chorizo" was none of those things. They might as well have gone to the market, bought chicken and apple sausage, and used that to make a taco. The highlight of the meal was the horchata. They make the horchata in-house and it was delicious. It was creamy with generous cinnamon flavor. It was rich and the kind of horchata that you have to mix each time you take a sip or it starts to separate. It was a nice contrast to the rich tacos. Mamey was a bit more expensive than I expected. I'm used to $1 tacos in Southern California or $2-2.50 tacos in Queens. Here, the lengua and the al pastor were $4 each. And the chorizo was $3. This place was definitely "Americanized" to fit the area. They call the lengua taco the "run your mouth" taco and they use that weird chorizo. But it's more authentic than what you can get from Del Fuego or Swell Taco in the area. This is a nice, safe, and clean place to get some real tacos instead of the mess you get from Del Fuego.

Eh tacos were fresh but very plain and lacked flavor. I wasn't impressed. We tried the trio (chicken, steak and carnitas) and chorizo and shrimp. The tacos were only topped with tiny amount of onion and cilantro. For 5 tacos they also only gave us two tiny containers of salsa. If you are one of those people who likes their food very plain without any seasoning or sauces then this place is for you. If you are like me, and like a lot of toppings, dressing and seasoning then you won't be impressed. Also the parking situation isn't great here.

AUTHENTIC MEXICAN SPOT! The prices are so good but what's even better is how delicious the the food is. Our favorite thing to get there is the Al Pastor tacos and Chicken Enchiladas with green sauce. Can't forget the churros either. They are soft and not too crunchy. They give you a side of melted fudge so drizzle over them. I've been getting food from them for the past 1 1/2 years and everything from the tortas to the tostadas to the variety of tacos is just sooo good. You can only order takeout at this time so we just take it home but it travels well. The staff is always nice. It's right next to the Babylon train station which is how we found this place so please visit next time you are thinking of ordering Mexican takeout.

5 stars for their nachos. One for their flautas. So my math that is cinco minus uno. Much much better than del fuego's nachos.

We sat in their insulated outdoor area amidst string lights and beachy vibes, and every meal starts out with their addicting tortilla chips and salsa verde. (Pro-tip -- save some of this green salsa to have with whatever you order!) We tried their chicken flautas appetizer, and if you are a fan of all that is cheesy and crispy, you will definitely enjoy this one. My favorite item on the menu was next -- the Crunch and Munch ground beef taco -- this literally was an elevated version of Taco Bell's cheesy Gordita crunch, and it made me super happy. We also shared their shredded beef burrito (think barbacoa), which was a Saturday special, but honestly, any of their burritos would be worthwhile. (I dare say that the burritos also feel kind of light? They are not over-the-top in the best way possible!) If you're looking for a casual taco spot after a day at Robert Moses or Overlook Beach (or any day, really), definitely check this place out -- you will fall in love after the first flavorful bite.

Everything had that fresh, made to order feel that immediately sets the tone for a great meal. The place was booming and the staff was so welcoming! The fish taco really stole the show. The batter on the fish was light, crisp, and perfectly golden. None of that heavy, greasy coating you sometimes get. It had a really clean crunch that let the fish itself shine, and every bite tasted fresh and beyond flavorful with the cabbage and crema on top. The carne asada mulitas were just as impressive. Rich, savory, and layered with flavor, with that perfect combo of melted cheese and grilled meat tucked into the house made tortillas. And the drinks tied everything together. The margaritas were super fresh and well-balanced, especially the spicy piña. No pre-made sour mix or after taste! You could tell everything was made with real ingredients bright, refreshing, and just the right kick of heat to keep it interesting. Overall, it was the perfect Cinco de Mayo stop! Great energy, fresh food, and standout flavors across the board. I will definitely be a regular here!

We were greeted promptly by our server who was very courteous. He took our drink order promptly and we ordered the appetizer of chips and guacamole. They bring out chips and salsa for every table. We ordered the iron skillet the Birria, chicken tacos, and a Besito bowl. The Besito bowl with steak was absolutely delicious. I tried Birria for the first time and it was very tasty. The iron skillets came with tortillas on the side so you can make your own soft tacos and my kids said that they enjoyed it, but it wasn't anything phenomenal. We asked them to remove the chorizo, but both of the iron skillet came out with chorizo. They did immediately take them back and deliver them promptly, leads me to believe they just simply removed the chorizo and sent it back out. Overall, it was a good experience, if I ever am craving Mexican food I would visit. The only reason I took one star away is the guacamole was $16 and it was a really small amount for that price. Also, because I told the waiter several times that we do not eat any pork and specified that we do not want the chorizo. The ambience of the restaurant is nice, it is on the smaller side, small and intimate.

The Brixton is a beautiful restaurant with very relaxed and casual vibes. The word around town is that their drinks are awesome. What about their food, though? They originally would not seat us in the middle of the afternoon because most of the empty tables were reserved. We had to request to sit outside, which was empty, before they decided to serve us. Odd that they did not even offer that to us. The General Tso' Cauliflower was the only great thing served to us. It is incredibly crispy and flavorful. You almost forgot that you were eating a piece of vegetable at times. The Short Rib Brisket Sesame burger was shocking. $18 for two White Castles-sized sliders. It was easily consumed, and I was left much to be desired. This is most definitely an appetizer item, not an entree. The Chicken Waffle was good. Nicely deep-fried and packs a lot of flavor. The waffle looked dubious. If I had to guess, it might not be mad fresh to order. Essentially, it's 3 drumsticks/wings over a possibly frozen Eggo waffle. I would recommend a second dish if you are looking to get full. The Steak frites and Eggs Benedict were the final dishes served. It is hard to mess these dishes up, but the ribeye was nicely seasoned and cut up. The dishes were nicely displayed. Overall, this is just an OK experience. When the deep-fried cauliflower appetizer is the most memorable dish here, it is quite alarming. Portion sizes are on the small end, and none of the flavors for the entrees really stuck out. Perhaps I will come here strictly for the drinks next time.
