A 5 star rating for me is extremely rare but Mama's is a restaurant that deserves it. We stopped by for the first time ever on our way back from Westhampton this past Thursday night after hearing about it from my sister (who is also a tough critic). We had no idea that we would luck out and be able to go there on "chicken night" but we did (and we got there early so no wait at all!). They have a special on Mondays with "pasta night" and Thursdays with "chicken night." Well, for $14.95 you get a really nice salad with the most amazing balsamic dressing, a choice of about 20 different chicken dishes, a side of pasta, cheesecake and coffee. You can't beat this special price for the large, delicious portions they give you and the amazingly prepared dishes. I had a wonderful chicken parm and my husband had the best chicken pizzaiola ever. Their tomato sauces are great and the salad dressing is so good that I actually bought a pint of it to take home and I've been savoring it all week on salads at home. Yes, it's that good that I should be raving about a salad dressing. There has to be crack in it because I'm starting to get nervous that it will soon be finished and I will have no more left! Now for the garlic knots! I almost forgot about them. They are heavenly puffs of dough bathed in garlic and highly addictive. Definitely THE BEST garlic knots I have ever tasted in my life. The pizza choices at the counter looked amazing and the next time we go back on a non-special night (and there definitely will be a next time!), we have to try the pizza and the wonderful appetizers we saw going by as well as some of the great pasta dishes on the menu. The owner was very nice and extremely appreciative and the service was great even though it was very crowded by the time we left. I have no idea why some of the reviews said the service was bad since the waiters and waitresses we saw were all very nice and many of them greeted their customers as soon as they recognized them. I wish we lived closer but we will be traveling from Oceanside to eat here again soon because it was that good. For the past 15 years, we would go to Mama's for family celebrations. That came to an end today, NEVER AGAIN! I made a reservation a few days ago for a party of 8 for lunch on Thursday, to celebrate my daughter's church Confirmation. When we arrived, the girl at the desk, who clearly enjoyed sorting menus, asked me 4 times how many in my party, keep in mind we were the only ones standing in the waiting area. She told us we had to wait. Ok - no problem...After 25 minutes and watching 2 large families arriving after us being seated, we asked for the manager. This is the shocking part - the "manager" who said he was the owner's son, told us he didn't have enough staff and couldn't seat us. We pointed out to him that half of the restaurant was empty. He simply told us if we sit at a table he can't guarantee that we will be served! Really.... At the same time, there was a woman who was visibly upset and stormed out saying she would never come back again. The "manager" did nothing to save the reputation of this 40 year old family owned business. Instead, I had to scramble to find another restaurant that could accommodate a family of eight, plus we were all dressed up and just came from church. The sign says "Mama's Pizza", but the name is a misnomer, because this more of a sit-down family restaurant than a pizza parlor. We arrived for an early lunch on a Sunday, and we were presented with dinner menus, which did not even include pizza. The waiter who looks like the actor, Chazz Palminteri ("A Bronx Tale"), must be a stand-up comedian when he is not working here, because he subjected us to an endless barrage of quips, wisecracks, and remarks which he thought were very funny. However, he was not outrightly rude, and we eventually got everything that we ordered. While my companions had heavy-looking parmagana dishes, which they couldn't even finish because of the large portion sizes, I went with lighter fare, soup and a salad. The Italian Wedding Soup was a chicken broth with tiny meatballs, brasied escarole, and ditalini pasta. It was not too good. The escarole and the meatballs were cooked properly, but both the meatballs and the broth were extremely salty. The broth seemed to be made purely from commercial chicken bouillon concentrate dissolved in hot water, which, I suppose, is how one bowl of soup is "made to order, not premade in a big pot", as per the waiter's explaination. I also ordered the Salumeria Antipasto platter--romaine lettuce, marinated artichokes, roasted peppers, mozzarella, provelone, soppresata, frizzled onions, and balsamic dressing. This was not too bad, especially the fried onions, although the artichokes and peppers tasted like they came out of a can, and the few rounds of soppresata were thick and leathery. They really tout their house balsamic dressing, which was good. I can't comment on the rest of the extensive menu, but it is unlikely that I will eat here again. 2-1/2 stars. read more

The waiter asked, "another round of soft drinks?" Forgot to mention that it will be more than the cost of a six pack of beer for two sodas. Also, when you put a sign up that says "$3.00 off Sicilian Pizza on Wednesdays." you might want to honor that deal, and not tell me after the meal that it's "take-out only." Even though the sign did not say take out only. Owner was a real piece of work when trying to haggle the price. Eventually he gave in, but I think it was to get me out of the restaurant, as it was bringing a lot of attention to the other guests that this place was ripping us off. It's 2014. Don't be deceived by the name, Mama's is so much more than just pizza. The house salad dressing must be laced with crack because I swear I wake up sometimes in the middle of the night craving it. The sweet chili sesame calamari is a culinary delight that is second to none (my gf and I can make a meal out of just it). Often there are specials which are nothing short of inspired genius. But my personal favorite is their basic Italian dishes. I cannot go here and NOT order the Gnocchi alla Mama. Served with huge chunks of garlic I find myself sitting at my table dying every time I see an order come out of the kitchen and not be brought to my table. Oh, I almost forgot to mention that the portions are gigantic. Be prepared to take home leftovers for another meal or two. Now the downside. It is frequently crowded ... like all great restaurants. After hearing so many good things about Mama's we piled the family in the cars with high hopes for a delicious Italian dinner. When we arrived they told us it would be a 30 minute wait, and true to their word we we were seated in 30 minutes. Things started out great with terrific garlic knots, crispy outside, soft inside with the perfect medley of garlic and parmesan cheese on top. We were a large group so we ordered pizza and a sampler platter as appetizers. The pizza was delicious, as was the fried zucchini. The rest were a disappointment. The fried ravioli were hard as a rock and the calamari were chewy. The mozzarella sticks were average. The entrees are large but that does not mean they are good. My entree was covered in a gloppy pink sauce that was so greasy I was unable to eat it. The same with the lobster carbonara. Thick, greasy, gloppy sauce. The shrimp had that awful iodine flavor. The chicken cordon blue was good as was the chicken parmesan. The red sauce was good, and the vodka sauce was tasty but a bit oily. There are so many good Italian restaurants on Long Island that I personally will not waste time giving Mama's another try. read more

This was my first time dining at Mama's. In fact I ate there tonight. My friend wanted to take me there for my birthday and I was looking forward to it since I had bookmarked mama's some time ago on Yelp. So we walk in and there's a bit of a line but that's fine bc it's Saturday night. We tell the hostess we need a table for 2 and we don't have a reservation. She tells us 25 minutes which is fine and we head to the bar for a drink. I order Patron on the rocks with fresh squeezed lime juice in it but instead the bartender gives it to me straight w the limes on the side of the glass. I squeeze them in myself but they are not enough so I ask for more and he drops the limes into my glass with a spoon and now I have to dig them out with my fingers so I can squeeze the juice out of them and he doesn't even offer me a napkin to wipe my fingers with bc apparently at mama's they don't put a cocktail napkin under your drink at the bar...not professional. He should have offered the limes in a rocks glass on the side. So we are seated and our waiter is Manny. He seems nice enough but again I order another Patron with fresh squeezed lime juice IN IT, and I get the patron plain with one tiny lime wedge on the side. Hello!!! So now we get around to ordering.. We got the Calamari Arrabiatta and then after we ordered our entrees. Manny seemed very rushed and when I said I'd like Veal Milanese, which I might add is a pretty common Italian dish, he very abruptly said "We don't have that!" Are you kidding me? I explained I wanted a breaded veal cutlet with a caprese salad w arugula over it.. He said no arugula! He was rushing us and seemed slightly exasperated with me bc I didn't give him an easy order. And everything according to Manny was an up charge up charge up charge! Anyway my friend asked another waiter if they have arugula because he could not believe that in an Italian restaurant there is no arugula. and he said yes of course we do. And we told the long haired waiter that manny said no..so allof a sudden Manny comes running over to the table saying excuse me but what exactly did you want? To which I replied the same thing that I told you I wanted before. And then all of a sudden he was very accommodating I guess because he was not busy any longer and obviously the other waiter told him what we had said. Anyway the food came out and the food was pretty good. The portions were very generous and I have plenty to take home. My friend and I decided to order desserts and we ordered two desserts. The carrot cake was mediocre but the peanut butter cheesecake was very good. The only problem was that my friend had told the hostess that it was my birthday and to do something like put a candle in my dessert as well asThe fact that I told Manny that it was my birthday during the course of our dinner and he didn't put a candle in my cake which upset my friend. Manny needs to get some better listening skills. But the most insulting aspect of our experience tonight was this... On a $116 dinner Check we left a $30 tip which is about 27% tip. You would think that Manny would come and say thank you for such a generous tip on a table that he messed up pretty badly but he did not say thank you. In my opinion that's pretty bad manners. We had probably one of the best waiters, Greg. He was personable, funny, and had great recommendations for us. He seemed to know the menu very well like the back of his hand. He just made our dining experience so enjoyable. The food was abundant and delicious for the prices. The garlic knots were fresh and the best around. Non-counter food is better than the pizza, which is decent but doesn't stand out. As other posters said, the garlic knots are really good and cracky. The food here isn't going to change your life, but the basic pasta and chicken dishes are consistently really good. I love the mac and cheese with spinach and bacon and the lasagne, excellent choices on a cold winter night when you don't feel like getting dressed up for dinner. I do wish the salads were a little more interesting, the dressing is too sweet and it's mainly iceberg. Overall a really decent Italian standby in the otherwise restaurantless area of Copiague. Portions are big, as other posters noted, but the pricing is pretty big too- basic penne ala vodka is like $16, and most apps are over $10. read more

I had several family members come in from out of town to visit. And before they all had to leave, we decided to have a nice family dinner here at Mama's. It was a Tuesday night and I was surprised to see the restaurant was still crowded. In fact, we had to wait ~20 minutes before being seated. This seemed like an eternity while sitting there so I was definitely a little grumpy from the get go. So when we finally got seated, the service was a little slow at first. It took several minutes to get our drink order, several more minutes to actually bring it out, and another 10 minutes or so to then finally take our dinner order. And only after that did we see the first sign of garlic knots. So now, let's get to the food. First, the garlic knots came out HOT (not warm), which tells me they literally just pulled them out of the oven. Delicious. It took a lot of will power to NOT stuff myself with garlic knots. When the entrees came out, I can tell you the food was top notch. I had the Chicken Marsala and it's definitely one of the better ones I've had. The chicken was super tender and the Marsala sauce was as savory as can be! My other family members equally enjoyed their food as well from the Chicken Parm to the Stuffed Rigatoni to even the classic Spaghetti with Meatballs among dishes that I'm having trouble recalling. The portions were very sizable so be sure to have room in your refrigerator at home because you'll definitely be bringing some back with you. Hello everyone. I believe this place might be heading downward. I don't know. But for starters , I walked in and was not greeted and seated by the hostess in a very nice way. She looked mad and was not friendly. The floor in the restaurant felt very greasy! I was slipping and sliding everywhere. The service was pretty good. Me and my family just had pizza and it was good. ABSOLUTE WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE!!!! My girlfriend and I used to love this place but it's been getting worse and worse. I called and ordered our favorite dishes which we've ordered countless times before but the women on the phone had zero clue what her she was doing. After repeating my self 4-5 times about how I wanted my food she finally repeated it back to me and it wasn't even close to how I ordered it. So now, kind of aggravated I had to start the entire process over....again. After getting it finally straightened out I hang up, only to be called back from now a different person asking me what I ordered. Now for the 7th time I had to give my order to them. Since they don't have delivery I did the 15 min drive to them and got my food. Getting home and being very excited to eat I opened up my dish only to find that its not what I've had countless times. I called back and explained to them it's not what I ordered/wanted. They told I had to drive back in ordered to get the food I want because they don't do delivery. Not entirely happy about it but understanding things happen I was on my way to my car when they called me back and said "the owner wants you to bring the food back. She wants to look at it." Pretty confused because I've NEVER had a restaurant call me to tell me to bring my old food back to the restaurant before I could get my new food I said just simply said "uh, sure". After finally get back to the restaurant they proceeded to take the food they had given me back...I guess to make themselves feel better I didn't get a dish for free. Not if that was strange enough the man making the pizza, I still don't know if he's an owner or just a dude who makes pizza comes over to literally talk to me like I was 5 and he was my dad. He told me "I ordered wrong and they didn't mess up my food, I just simply didn't know what I was ordering. That I need to know what I'm ordering because it's wasting food and they're busy." I've worked in restaurants my entire life and I personally own a restaurant and I have NEVER been talked down to like that a place that I spend my money. So not only did it take 15 minutes to place an order which they had to call me back to clarify, they then scolded me and said it was my fault and that I need to be more careful while ordering. They're Rude, repugnant, clueless and quite frankly have zero grip on customer service. Never spending a penny there again. read more

Absolutely love this place for both pizza take out and dine in! First off the specialty slices may be $5 but they are massive and delicious so it is totally worth it! I have had the buffalo chicken and the BBQ slices and both were yummy! As for the dine in, I cannot tell you how many times I have been here because it is way too many. My family and I love this restaurant, especially on Mondays and Thursdays. Monday nights are pasta night and Thursday night are chicken night. Both nights are a worth trying. The serving sizes are huge even on nights when they have specials. I take home half the entrée and can eat it as another meal the next day. The special comes with Mama's house salad. The dressing is one of my favorites. An entrée and cheesecake with coffee. Plus they give you garlic knots when you first sit down and I think they might be the best garlic knots I have ever had. The specials are cheap for the amount and quality of food you are getting. My personal favorite entrée is the chicken marsala, it is to die for. My dad visited Mama's yesterday around noon to afternoon and asked to order from the lunch menu. I was a loyal customer and frequently ate there. They said it was only available as dine-in. He said that if it's policy he'll understand, but that I had a condition that flares up and prevents me from walking at times and I couldn't dine-in so could they make an exception. The man speaking said "That's not my problem." It isn't the rule that bothered me at all. If that's policy, that's understandable. But what he said was wrong and I'm shocked Mama's is allowing such callous people like that to work at their location. If the employee wasn't working there I would remove this review but the fact that someone who can be cruel like that to someone with a medical condition is disturbing. read more

So many positive things to say about Mama's, so I'll start there - The decor is new and modern. I love looking around at all the textures and colors. The food is really good. REALLY, REALLY good. Garlic Knots appear at the table just made and warm. Mama's Peach Sangria is so good, so it's hard to have just one. The flatbread pizza as an appetizer is light, but yummy. Chicken Parm is so tender, you can cut it with your folk. Chicken Madeira is enough for 3 people. My favorite Salad is the Povoratti Salad with grilled shrimp on top. Mama's house salad dressing is super dellsh. Portion sizes for the most part are really generous. On the negative side, there's usually a wait AND they don't take reservations. They will however, serve small slices of different square pizza while you wait. They up charge you for the slightest changes... I dislike feeling nickel and dimed at any establishment.... They do not tell you when you are ordering a refill of your soda, but YOU ARE being charged for each refill. While the busboys are everywhere, The servers seem so rushed the last few visits, hard to get them back to the table....I just feel they need more. While we really enjoy the atmosphere and the food, lately the wait AND the service makes us sometimes go elsewhere. read more

Wow... I just realized this evening that I never wrote a review of Mama's. This is a family owned business for as long as I can remember, actually if I remember correctly, there's been 3 generations in here. The only reason why I know this is because there was a feature article on Mama's over the summer. They recently went through a huge renovation expansion and it is gorgeous now. Their food has always been spot on, but now with the added modern flair of fine dining, Mama's is the place to be for all occasions, whether it's a small gathering for a birthday party or just a night out because you don't feel like cooking. Monday nights are pasta night specials! Get there early because they get crowded quickly. I'm not sure if the prices has gone up in the last few months because of the economy, but for the last several years, you used to be able to get $9.95 pasta dinners that includes your salad, pasta dish, choice of dessert, and coffee/tea, and they have a huge selection of dishes to choose from! And $7.95 for the lunch special with the same offerings but a shorter menu, if they still have that. And you simply can't resist the garlic knots! This is REAL Italian meals, you know it is when you get that soft garlicky goodness fresh from the oven in your mouth. It is well worth the wait! The staff is always wonderful. I only wish I'm back on LI right now so I can go back to Mama's. I'll probably be back again on Memorial Day weekend when I visit. Maybe mini-reunion folks? read more

If I could give this place more stars I would. I drive all the way from stony brook to pick up dinners(about a 30minute drive) and pizza from this place. The prices are high, but you are getting quality and quantity all in one. Service is great as well. Not sure if he was an owner or not, his name is Sal...big bald Italian looking fella, the guy is a gentleman. My wife forgot to order my dinner and I had to wait almost 35 min more during the dinner rush. It was not their fault by any means. The man Sal apologized for the wait, stayed on top of it and then threw in a bottle of Red Wine. Awesome Guy. He's always been a nice guy everytime I go. I got home and the food was still piping hot and delicious as always. The dinners are spectacular and their pizza is on point. If you haven't been to Mama's, do yourself a favor...GO. Went to dinner here for a friends birthday the other night so had no choice. He picked. As with my last two reviews we had our 2 kids and their 2 kids. Two 4 year olds, a 3 year old, and 1 year old. We were treated like dirt as we asked the hostess for a booth and said we'd wait but she tells us "they want us to sit kids at tables." Never heard of this before, but kids were hungry so whatever. This time though rather then being rushed out we were an afterthought. People that came in after us and ordered after us got served first and were leaving before we got our food. Some of those had the same waitress and 2 of them ordered the same as my wife and I did yet we were told that our orders took longer to cook. It's chicken parm! It doesn't take 45 mins to be ordered then served and when my friends daughter asked about crayons the hostess said "Dear, this isn't Friendly's." Nice to say that to a 3 year old. Rude hostess, had to ask 3 times for a high chair as waitress admitted she kept forgetting, and long wait for food that was over cooked. I wish we could give 0 stars. read more

Went here for lunch with my sisters and my mom's bf. What we sampled: The Garlic Knots (amazing!! and as many as we wanted) Chicken Breast Alla Giuseppe (my sister raved about this and the portion was enormous) Chicken Panzanella (Awesome and very fresh tasting another huge portion) Chicken Portobello (Really wonderful vodka sauce and two large chicken breasts. This was enough for two meals) Rigatoni with chicken and mushrooms (delicious, but the portion was definitely not as large as that with the chicken entrees) Red Velvet Cake (a decent version) Overall I would definitely return, though they do charge for drink refills ($2.00 a soda with quite a bit of ice in it) and when I asked to box up some of the garlic knots we had to order a dozen to go. A bit nickel and dime for my taste, but the food was good. The service was also a problem throughout. The waitress did not even know we were in her section for 10 minutes and instead of just apologizing she blamed it on the hostess in front of us.
