These homemade hand pies are delicious - offering a flaky, delectable crust with an assortment of fillings (sweet or savory) to choose from. The Mushroom Oaxaca Cheese handpie (which includes "crimini mushrooms, roasted with onions, local & organic cilantro, scallions, and garlic. Served with housemade salsa verde, using local and organic tomatillos, cilantro, and hot peppers. Wrapped in our standard butter crust") and Potato & NYS Cheddar ("our best-selling pie includes buttery mashed potatoes with a N.Y.S. 3-year aged Welsh-style Cheddar from Jake's Cheese Company in Deansboro, NY, as well as English mustard and 'sneaky' onions. Served in our standard short crust") are personal favorites... but you really can't go wrong no matter your choice. (Also, they regularly have gluten free and/or dairy free options.) The hand pies generally go for $5.25-$6/piece, depending on flavor. Various items like soup, pierogies, or desserts like babka or whoopie pies can sometimes be found on rotation as well (prices will vary). Be sure to also keep an eye on their social media, like Instagram! They'll announce special pop ups at their location on 1710 Trumansburg Rd (which apparently used to be a place called Redder's Bar and Grill). TL;DR Mmmm... hand pies. Be sure to get some to enjoy some locally made sweet or savory goodness!

The vegan tempeh pie was really tasty! The spanakopita was good too. Would love to give it a higher rating but they were pretty small and it was 12$ for two.

Mama Said serves freshly made pies. I went with the Jamaica Beef Patty and really enjoyed it. The pie crust was flaky and the filling was delicious and full of flavor. When I went, they also had a potato and cheese pie, a mussel one, and a knish.each pie is about $4-$5. There is metered street parking. The parking lot behind Mama is free to park on weekends only.

"Mama Said" pies are on! OMG, had these at the Farmers Market, I almost missed them at the very end of the market. Sooo glad I didn't! We had the Japanese Beef Curry, the Poblano and the spanakopita. All were delicious! I've seen the positive reviews for the others and so I'll post one for the spanakopita. This beautiful buttery and flaky crust houses the perfect dollop of light cheese, spinach and aromatic fresh dill. There's a hint of lemon that balances it all out and gives it that je ne sais quoi! Good fast food; Eat 'em up!

I came and ordered from Mama Said Hand Pies on a whim but found the Pumpkin Pasty to be rather disappointing. The pumpkin filling in the interior tasted very artificially pumpkin flavored and had a weird spice that was overpowering the pumpkin flavor. But I did think that the outer pastry portion was yummy! It was slightly dense but was also flaky and buttery. I feel like maybe the pumpkin pasty wasn't the best choice, but maybe their other fillings (savory or sweet) could potentially be better! Also the pastry could have tasted better warm (but the cashier didn't offer this). I really love their small mom-and-pop shop vibe and found the business concept and store interior to be super cute so I really wanted to like the pasty, but it wasn't all that great. If you want to come maybe order a safer/more popular filling!

Delicious hand pies! Crust was really flaky and the filling (we got potato and cheddar) was perfect. Can't wait to try other flavors.

Mama Said Hand Pies is a treasure in Ithaca! Delicious vegan, vegetarian and meat hand pies. We selected one of each pie on the menu and were incredibly impressed by the sweet and savory pastries. My favorite was the NYS cheddar and potato pie. The whipped potatoes were creamy and the cheddar was sharp and flavorful. The crust was buttery, flakey and delicious. We called the order in ahead of time and the employee who explained the menu options was extremely helpful and went into detail about the diverse menu items they had on offer. The order was ready when I arrived, all the employees had masks in and the customers were safely social distancing. We are looking forward to returning here in the future! Next time we are in Ithaca we will plan to bring a cooler to purchase some of their frozen pies to enjoy at home. Photo from left to right, a blackberry pie, blueberry gallette, NYS cheddar and potato pie, a puff pastry with roasted veggies, fresh pesto and baby tomatoes, Japanese beef curry pie, kale and chickpea pocket, vegan Irish Knish, and a spanakopita hand pie.

Amazing pie crust + creative fillings = a perfect meal! Both their savory and sweet hand pies are delicious.

Tasty treats but $6 for a single 3 bite empanada is quite over priced. I would order from them often if the price were fair.

The Japanese curry always yummy, but the spanakopita is hands down the best. The blueberry hand pie was also delicious

We originally came here because we saw they have gluten-free bagels. And we need someplace to eat safely because of celiac. Clean minimal interiors, service is quick - order and pick up at the counter. There is ample space in the cafe to dine in. I ordered the avocado toast, which came topped with pickled onions and radish. It was fresh, flavorful, and I especially liked the addition of the radish--it's not something I would have thought to add to avocado toast, but it worked really well. I'll definitely remember that idea the next time I make one at home. My husband ordered the egg bagel sandwich with crispy kale. The kale added a nice texture and flavor, although he felt it was a little oily. We also had an Americano and an espresso, both of which were freshly brewed and made for a great start to the drive home. If you're looking for a good breakfast and coffee spot in Ithaca, Hound and Mare is definitely worth a stop.

I think that's called the Washington Park neighborhood, or west-Downtown. For pickup, we parked on Meadow. To eat in, there's a pretty large parking lot on Court Street. We saw what looked like more than 40 pastries in the display case, more than 15 bagel varieties, smoothies, teas, lemonade, and a host of creative coffee beverages. Of course, i got an espresso, neat. Rich, dense, dark, hot, perfectly drawn. And a regular Americano with oat milk. Fresh and tasty. Got a generously decorated well-crisped BLT to-go. We split that enormous blueberry, strawberry, kiwi tart. I wont even tell you what we added on top, but i'll say it was nearly next door ;-) Quick friendly service. The happy chatter of well-caffeinated well-sugared people. We even saved a fellow pastry-aficionado from forgetting their purse!

The coffee is also delicious and didn't even need a flavor added. The man taking our orders the first day was also incredibly kind and you could tell he just enjoyed his job, or at least was happy to be there. There's also a mini shop here basically. There's fresh bread and prepackaged meals here like Shepards pie and fruits and veggies. There also was plenty of cute merch and I left with two designs. Two things that I didn't like. Ordering was a bit chaotic. There are labeled areas that show where to order what, but if it's your first time in it can feel overwhelming and you might be wandering a bit figuring it out. I wish it could all be ordered at one spot, not like it's a food hall. I understand that this probably does work the best for them though and is most likely pretty easy for ordering if you're a local. Lastly, I had an issue with a woman working the second day. They have a big menu and I was looking at it above her head while ordering. She was fine while I was talking, but stopped me when I went to walk away. She said "You know, you really need to face people while you're talking to them." What! So awkward and weird. That's the main reason I took one star off because it caused me not to go back again. Very rude and felt like a mini lecture for no reason.

This time (Jul 2026) was like our visit a couple of years ago. The menu was rather short, and we didnt see many middle-of-the-road or ordinary comfort-food offerings. Their local sourdough bread appetizer was fresh and nicely flavored, and we chose the fresh olive oil side just because it's so luscious. We could have had chive-butter. The marinated olives were flavorful and a little spicy. Their NY-cheese board had a tasty selection of soft and hard cheeses. The salads had choices of a chutney-paneer based mix, which was refreshingly creative. And we liked the Farmstand berry-cherry goat-cheese almond salad. These were all appealing. Chickpea salad or stew, tofu or salmon over steamed veggies, or smoked-trout open-face tartine sandwich, each sounded good, but we didnt bite. None of the mains called to us. I guess we just felt that none of those menu items screamed out we-gotta-come-to-this-restaurant. The food tasted like just homemade and fresh, but not exceptional. I ordered the tofu green curry and the man ordered the Moosewood burger. Neither dish was hot upon arrival at the table - more like lukewarm. The man says the burger wasn't particularly flavorful, although the roasted potatoes it came with were very good. The curry was flavorful and spicy, although the curry sauce was on the thin side. We didn't order appetizers (other than the olives) or dessert, so I can't comment on either. The service was friendly and efficient. When I mentioned that the food hadn't been served hot, the server removed two of our drinks from the bill as compensation, which was appreciated. I would give it another try before leaving Ithaca, but my expectations will be tempered on a second trip.
