The staff was super nice and efficient but the sandwich was meh At the time I arrived they were already putting the chairs away because they were closing in a few, so I made a rushed decision: The Aspen Buddha (Turkey Swiss Curry Aioli Sunflower Seeds Lettuce Tomatoes Sprouts Banana Peppers Cucumbers). In my mind I was making a "healthy choice" but in reality I felt like I was about to eat a loaf of bread. I thought it seemed silly to pay only $2 less for a half a sandwich so I ordered the whole but then shamefully threw away most of the bread and ate only the innards which were also pretty boring. Even though I'm trying to keep my carb intake in check--I'm fully capable of for example enjoying a whole loaf of challah in one sitting if inspired but this wheat loaf did not inspire those kind of urges. As for the rest of the sandwich, it could have really used more curry aioli or something because I don't think I tasted that at all. If was ever forced to eat this same sandwich again I might ask for a side of vinaigrette, giardiniera, avocado. Something. The people were right: this was a dry sandwich. The reason I was even in Golden is because I wanted to test the feasibility of taking the W line to the Golden government center that is 2 miles from downtown and then riding my bike to have a picnic by Clear Creek. Turns out that yes, this is great with the understanding that the bike ride back to the light rail is way more intense when heading back to Denver. All uphill on my single speed! Without the Aspen Buddha, since it was 95 degrees or so I might have died had I not eaten/rehydrated. I am thankful for that. Also thankful for the life lesson about bringing my own picnic so I only have myself to complain to next time.

I have many friends in Boulder and nearby who have told me for years that this is the very best…read moremeal they have had in Nederland. I have hardly ever eaten in town as we are usually just passing through to other locations in western Boulder County and adjacent counties, like Gilpin. We had a house guest who was interested to see the mountain ride along the Peak to Peak Highway this weekend, so we did the ride and then on the way back to Boulder, stopped here for lunch. So did apparently most of the people out on a beautiful Saturday. It was mobbed, both inside and out, and the wait list was 20 minutes for inside and 45 for outside. We put our name on the list for "first available" which turned to be inside, and at 25 minutes, close enough. That was fine for me, as the weather was changing outside. Inside was clean and moderately noisy but not obtrusively so. Outside had traffic noise and people waiting to be called, some with multiple dogs on leash, milling around. There is a prominent sign stating that only service dogs are allowed in. Their pizzas are small enough to be considered as an individual serving. We are not all big eaters, especially at lunch, so we ordered two for the three of us and even so, had a few pieces to take home for leftovers use. We ordered the Margherita and the Mama Suprema and everyone got enough to have some of each if they chose to. We had non-alcoholic drinks this time but their bar menu was very tempting with both beers and ciders on tap. I had only Margherita slices. The marinara was classic family recipe, the mozzarella was in small balls and the fresh basil leaves were prominent. The dough was Italian family recipe style, with wood fired char in appropriate amounts. This is not NYC style which has a stiffer bake and much more char. I do love both. The Mama Suprema had marinara sauce, with sausage, green peppers, red onion, mozzarella, and fresh garlic. The two that ate it said it was a great combo with a little kick but not hot and spicy. Our drinks were fine, an Arnold Palmer, a local root beer on tap and my sparkling water, which was an entire 16 oz bottle. I never had to ask for a refill. Our server was quick, friendly, with an efficiently positive demeanor and we really enjoyed the meal. The place was very clean and family friendly as a neighbor table had two small children enjoying themselves and sitting on boosters, nicely provided by the restaurant. The line went out the door until we were ready to leave, when most customers had finally been able to be seated. Plan ahead and be relaxed, because this is apparently what Saturday lunch looks like during the busier parts of the year. It was well worth it, prices were standard and everything was served on actual dishes, including the pizza. Often places will serve with the metal pan from the oven which is awkward on a table with multiple pizzas.

I want to say it was busy for sure but because it's pizza, there is no actual urgency. The pizzas take as long as they take so give yourself plenty of time. A few things I'd like to take a moment to point out. A.) Pizza needed to be cooked longer. I would have preferred them to cook it so that the cheese all melted. It's not really appetizing when it's not. Maybe another min or two could help but I'm guessing with them being as busy as they were, they may have pulled them early. B.) plates could have been cleaner. Server also asked us more than once if we needed anything else, and I did ask for a glass with ice so I can add it to our warm water that was on the table when we arrived, and I also asked for a straw and never received either. Pretty disappointed in the service. Nice enough young lady but don't ask me if I need anything and then never do it. Twice. It could have been cleaner across the board. Lots of flies and gnats flying around. I waited tables for decades and I always hustled. Clearing, cleaning, greeting a table so you know someone is coming even if you can't take their order yet. I think maybe just the small town and laid back lifestyle could explain it all. On the plus side, I am excited about reheating the pizza for lunch today because it was a little under, it will cook nicely today.
