We counted seven people behind the counter. Nobody was cleaning the tables, and we stood at the counter while five of the seven people did nothing, and never attended to us. As is typical of a Filipino restaurant, much of the food is served "Turo Turo" (in chafing dishes, behind a "sneeze guard") ... however, each time we asked for one of the cooked to order items on the menu, we were told "we are out of that". First off, this place is nondescript and not fancy. There's no table service or a hostess who will lead you to your seat. It's a casual place where you go in, and pick from their available cooked food on display ("turo-turo"), which changes daily and is posted on their Facebook page. If you're unfamiliar with any of the dishes, the employees are more than happy to tell you more about them and let you sample anything you'd like to try. Everything can be bought separately, or bought in combos with either white or garlic fried rice. People say that you'll know if a place is authentic based on the people who frequent it. Based on that, it can be implied that this place serves authentic Filipino food. However, since the Philippines is made up of 7,000+ islands, there are also distinct regional cultures and tastes. So your parents'/grandparents'/whomever's cooking may differ from how this restaurant's chefs/cooks reproduce certain dishes. It doesn't mean their version is wrong, or that it's bad, it just means that it's different. Anyway, I've been here many times, and have never had any issues with the food or service. My favorites are the lechon kawali, laing, and sago't gulaman. Everything I've tried have always been tasty. To me, the "sabaw" (soup/broth) to ingredient ratio has always been on point because I love "sabaw" and it reminds me of my parents' cooking. So Filipino =) You can buy different types of take home desserts like Ube cake from Goldilocks, Magnolia ice cream and Leche Flan. The drinks are self serve fountain drinks or from a cooler filled with soda's, mango juice and coconut juice too. We plan on going back again this weekend as our new weekend favorite. We are always full and happy every single visit. Inexpensive, clean, yummy food, and great service. Aristocrat's chicken - the best! Sisig - not the kind I like. not for me. Lechon Kawali - good! We ordered Lechon Kawali for take out this morning. I was told that it will be cooked to order. Food was not freshly cooked, it was refried. It was so dry and hard and difficult to chew. It was most likely left overs from yesterday. We stopped eating it because we may pay more for dental issues because of the texture of the food they gave us. Will not buy food from this place again. Yes - the chicken was bone in on a skewer, and that's weird, but it was still tasty. If I lived in the area, I would certainly come back from time to time, but I don't think this would be a destination location like some reviews indicate. The lady who works the cash register is extremely rude if you're not Filipino. Filipino fast food! Cheap and good food. We tried the lechon kawali (fried pork belly), bagoong pork (pork cooked with shrimp paste), chicken inasal (roasted chicken) & chicken barbecue on a stick. So you get rice with two item entree. BTW, they give you 2 sticks of chicken barbecue and I miss that sweet filipino style barbecue. I wasn't a fan of the chicken inasal or roasted chicken... it was ok. We also tried their halo-halo and that was good as well. I would compare Mama Rosa to Pampaguena Cafe in Gaithersburg/Germantown area. But what gives them the one or two up from Pampaguena Cafe is that the server is much much friendlier and nicer. I'm liking this place more each time I go there. Not that I'm an expert or anything, but their lechon kawali was darn tasty. Crispy, crunchy, pork belly with garlic rice and vinegar - it doesn't get much better than that. Period. So come here and try it. I love that they also constantly change out the homemade desserts too. This time they had biko, which is a sweet sticky rice cake. It is addictive. I'm also a big fan of the fact that they carry other Filipino goodies like Pan de Sal (sweet bread traditionally served with breakfast) and ensaymada (sweet brioche bun with butter, sugar and cheese.) This place is a little far off the main roads but it's a nice clean restaurant serving many filipino favorites. I tried the lechon meal which was pretty good and it comes with rice. The lechon is crispy and juicy and tasted pretty good. They also serve peruvian chicken or honey roasted chicken and other pinoy speicals like pork tocino and longanzia and they also have a small section of baked breads that they order from somewhere which is also pretty good. Yum! I wasn't sure what to expect when I headed here because I've never had Filipino cuisine before, but I'm so glad I tried! My friend and I drove over after work one day with the intention of getting food to take out. We weren't sure what any of the dishes were, as they were not labeled, but we did a lot of pointing and asking. We opted to share a container of three side dishes in addition to two scoops of rice. We were asked "steamed or garlic rice" and we opted for steamed and our first side was the lechon kawali (pan roasted pork). The second was pork afritada (pieces of pork in a tomato sauce) and the third was a tofu dish with bean sprouts and carrots. Everything was so delicious. I really liked the lechon kawali. It was really crispy on the outside and moist and tender on the inside. The fatty parts of the meat were a bit too jello-y for me, but I powered through and found that it was the most flavorful part of the meat. It was also a big oily and greasy in some parts, but with the rice, the meal really hit the spot. My friend and I loved the lechon kawali so much that we came here a second time (the day after our first experience) to get some more. This time we opted for the garlic rice and got pork adobo and ginisang upo (squash and cellophane noodles and carrots in a salty sauce). We decided to do the point and choose again just to explore a few more dishes. I think one day we'll have to try the dishes that other reviewers have recommended. Went with a Filipina (to get the best explanations and advice and see how it compares to mom's). Tried a variety of pork products; best I thought was the Lechon Kawali, crispy flash fried, salted pork belly, shatteringly crunchy layer of skin, slightly dry meat, but oh so good (especially with a splash of white vinegar and banana ketchup). BBQ sauce on Pork on a Stick and Half-Rack of Ribs was tangy, lots of white vinegar, slightly sweet and soy sauce-based. Rotisserie Chicken was well-seasoned and moist, even the breast meat. Pancit Lomi was not quite what we expected, but was made hot while we were there, had a flavorful slightly sweet and savory, soupy, sauce with eggs scrambled in, some lechon chunks, fish cakes, stir-fried vegetables. Best sides were the Fried Plantains and Fried Yucca, both fried crisp, plantains soft and sweet, yucca mild and starchy. Chop Suey vegetables were fresh, crisp, lots of variety (including winter melon, Chinese broccoli, snow peas) and a surprise quail egg. Some specialty Filipino desserts from different bakeries (NY, NJ, MD, CA) are for sale, and they do specialty dessert drinks, as well, like Halo-Halo (not as sweet as expected) and Boba tea. Lunchtime specials are reasonably priced, generally a meat and 2 sides for $7.99. I eat here a few times a month and I order the same thing every time. A full rack of ribs. The ribs are so good, but my little girls think the sauce is too spicy. Every time I order it I say no sauce on the ribs-put the sauce on the side and every time the sauce is on the ribs. This time I clearly specified while placing my order over the phone and the person in the phone snapped at me telling me she already heard me because I said it three times. I explained to her that I wanted to be sure because it's always wrong. I went to pick up the ribs and opened them up before leaving and guess what.. sauce on the ribs. The cashier seemed annoyed that I brought it up and a gentleman came from the back to say the person who took my order just said sauce on the side. I've driven by this place for years thinking it was just another rotisserie chicken place. I was wrong. It is a small Filipino restaurant serving a wide variety of Filipino cuisine. Fortunately on the day I was there, they were offering a $12 buffet so o got to sample several different specialties. I loved it all except one of the noodle dishes with shrimp. It was a little too fishy tasting for me, but since I'd never had it before, that may just my tastes. I definitely recommend a look if your into Filipino food and just want to give it a try.
