The ambience of Mama Mia is a bit drab, somewhere between cafeteria and homely. The staff are all quite pleasant. There's a pool table by the bar, and hit rock tunes playing over the speakers. It's approximately on par with what you would expect for small-town Italian with a bar. In contrast to the rest of the digs, the pizza was quite remarkable. The chef clearly puts great care into his pizza. Crunchy but airy crust with an appropriate thickness to it. The cheese blend was clearly chosen with care. And the tomato sauce beautifully wove the rest of the ingredients together. I'd highly recommend Mama Mia for a family wanting some pizza after a day out hiking or skiing. We should have taken the disorganized seating as a warning. We found a table it took almost 15 minutes to even be given menus and then the waitress acted like she was doing us a favor. She took our drink order brought the drinks and then disappeared. After another 10 minutes we had to flag her down to take our order. My husbands meal was supposed to have rolls and a salad after 40 minutes no sign of his salad or rolls (or our waitress) we asked for the check for our drinks and we were going to leave. Canaan Valley has been somewhat limited in dining choices. Mamma Mia was a pleasant surprise when we discovered it a year ago, and look forward to eating here when visiting the area. Eat in the back room during sunset for a beautiful view. We had chicken parmigiana and lasagna. Both portions were plentiful, served with garlic rolls and salad. I had the stuffed shells and they were hard and gritty tasting. The salad had the most interesting array of vegetables that did not go together. I was torn on this place. It looked like a really nice place to dine for dinner. I was there for lunch and it was really slow, so most of the place was closed. The salad came out and was supper good. I went to take a look on the kitchen (just out of pure curiosity on who the hell or what the hell were they making in that dog food processing plant) and I was pleasantly surprised to see two teenagers unloading and running to the local 7-11. Surprisingly enough, the best thing about this restaurant was the 9 waters I had to drink while I was eating the food so I could swallow it like a pill. This restaurant is very close to Canaan & Timberline resorts, located in the same plaza has Ski Barn. Nice large bar area and plenty of seating. Beautiful large window with a pretty view. We have eaten here twice (once, dining in- once to go) and have had great experiences. Both times we've ordered pizza and it arrives hot and fresh, high equality ingredients. The Stromboli portions are huge! Definitely enough for 3-4 people if you get the large. Staff are friendly and attentive. The first time we visited they were packed and we got the last table available. I was worried the wait would take forever but they were able to offer us quick service. Not much open in Davis West Virginia on a weeknight in January. Received advice from some locals not to eat here because the pizzas weren't the best....lots of oil. We tried anyway given the time of night. A fairly large restaurant with high ceilings, well lit, and red and white checkered table clothes. Not crowded on a Wednesday night. Good beer on draft. The warm dinner rolls were saturated in a garlic oil. Saturated is an understatement. We ordered another basket because there were really good. Our shrimp pasta dinner and calzone were equally good. We arrived at 5:30. You seat yourself and it took ten minutes to get service and we put our orders in at that time. They were fairly busy but had at least 4 waitresses plus someone that was busing and workers at the bar and one out front with to-go orders. I got my salad and rolls quickly but took another twenty minutes to finally get our drinks which I had to ask another waitress for. At 6:30 we were told it should be coming soon. At 6:45 we were told they only had one cook. At 7:00 we were told it was in the oven and should be coming. My baked ziti came out at 7:10 and was cold and VeRy watery! The two noodles I did taste were chewy and waaaay over cooked. At this point we went to say we were done and leaving. My husbands calzone came out while we were doing this...after another table that came in half an hour after us got their calzone and pizza. I also ordered a cannoli when we ordered everything else and never got it either. We never saw a manager at any point. As we were leaving we saw several folks with red shirts in the kitchen area so not believing there was actually only one cook. The waitress was "nice" enough to comp the salad I did actually eat. There was nothing else offered up for the experience. So after 2 hours we left, still hungry. I have never had such an aggravating experience! Our youngest asked for a grilled cheese sandwich. While not a menu item, they accommodated her request. Excellent pasta dishes. Pizza is a standard NY Style and just ok. My manicotti was excellent. The ricotta mixture and sauce went together perfectly and the pasta was tender. My husband said his baked ziti was the best he's had; being that his pasta was cooked perfectly. We both agreed the red sauce was thin, but still had great flavor. Garlic bread looked good, but was bland. The cheesecake was good and you can tell it's made in house. While our waitress was really nice, I will say that service was slow. When we got there we walked in at the same time as another couple at the same time and we sat at the same time. Another couple walked in several minutes afterwards and they were greeted and had drinks before we even got a menu. We also had to hear the waitresses argue who was going to take our table. Not very professional. Food was slow to come out as well. The restaurant wasn't busy. So while the food was really great, in future we would only consider going only if we have plenty of time. DO NOT GO TO THIS PLACE! Worst dining experience we've ever had! Where to begin. 1. The food was terrible, my grown son suddenly excused himself from the table and existed the building , I knew something was wrong and ask for take out cartons for our meals. I went outside and discovered he had thrown his food up in the parking lot, stating it was "bad" and we needed to leave. I went back inside and tried to let the head waitress know only to be meet with I'll get the manager... we didn't have time for that ! We had someone sick in the parking lot! My husband paid the bill anyway and we got out of there, threw away the leftovers as soon as we got back to the resort (we didn't know when we ask for take out cartons there was an issue)... 2.A person in our party ordered a simple grilled chicken salad and didn't receive it until just before we had to leave (at least 15 minutes after we all received our cooked meals!, they stated they forgot it and offered a 10% discount, that was outrageous, it should have been complimentary at that point ) 3.Did I mention the live horribly LOUD unpleasant country music? It was awful! This started up after we placed our order. If we'd walked in and that was in process we'd would have immediately walked out, not at all the atmosphere you would have expected for a nice meal! If you want a honky tonk, biker bar experience, this is the place! I looked around and none of the patrons were happy with that atrociously loud music, no way you could have a conversation! Because the menu lists both New York style and Sicilian style pizza, we requested confirmation that the large pizza would be New York style. Person taking our order didn't understand what New York style or Sicilian style is. We also asked whether the stromboli contained all the fillings listed, or if we had to choose among the fillings that were listed. Person taking our order told us that all fillings were in the stromboli. When we arrived to pay for and pick up the order, they tried to charge us extra for the fillings in the stromboli. Jay-zus, people! Why don't you try reading your own menu? Or, if you don't know the answer, ask another staff member who does know the answer. As for pizza, Mama Mia doesn't know the first thing about a proper Margherita pie. We threw away half of ours. read more

My husband & I were vacationing in the area & decided to stop at Mama Mia. The bread was very good, delicious toppings, fresh, warm. Yummy! I ordered veal scaloppini picata. I had high hopes that it would be delicious. I haven't had veal in ages. Unfortunately the veal was tough & tasted like there were 50 cloves of garlic in the dish. It was disappointing. My husband ordered penne putanesca with sausage. He said the meal was 3-1/2 stars. Ok but not great. If the chef would go much lighter on the garlic & not over-cook the veal, it would greatly improve the taste! A little hidden gem in the Valley.., food was very well prepared, surprisingly fresh ingredients, and more unique and tastier than I find in Northern Virginia. Had the stacked eggplant (loved it), Momma's calzone (was stacked), and a veggie pizza.., all great, loved the sauce and you can tell it was all home made.
