Malu’s Kitchen - Enchilas with rice & beans - Mexican Near Me - Atascadero, California

My husband and I started coming here a year ago and quickly became regulars for the excellent, home-cooked food and friendly husband and wife team that own and operate Malu's. He is a top-notch chef (you'll hear him singing as he cooks) and she is always welcoming and fun. Our favorite dishes include the carnitas plate (succulent carnitas with corn tortillas, beans, and all the fixin's), A la Mexicana breakfast (love the potatoes), crispy shell shredded beef tacos, and chile rellenos. Love Malu's beans! Today we both tried something different. He had steak fajitas and couldn't be happier with the sizzling cast iron platter filled with tender pieces of perfectly seasoned beef, onions, and bell peppers. Came with a separate platter of beans topped with melty cheese, rice, and guac. I had a combo plate with crispy beef taco and a chicken enchilada. Loved the enchilada sauce and tender, delicious lean chicken. Everything comes out fast here and is always so tastey. We love dining on the patio when weather permits, but inside is fun too. The food is amazing! Authentic Mexican. Service was too nitch. Tye inside is very small, so be prepared to sit outside on their patio. There are plenty of tables and umbrellas. We had the breakfast burritos, the menudo, and chorizo and eggs. Would 100% be back. read more

While we were sorry to see AJ's Kitchen go away we were excited to see Malu's Kitchen open in the same place. During the last couple of months while AJ's was closed the outside patio got a refresh with freshly painted tables and new umbrellas as well as a new menu. As with AJ's, Malu's has a definite home cooking vibe. By that I mean the dishes I've had so far and the ones on the menu I have yet to try (and I will!) all have that authentic look and taste of someone that is making food for their family. Portions are good sized and leftovers may go home with you. An unexpected treat was chips and salsa while we waited for our order. The salsa that came with the chips was excellent. Tasty, great texture and not so hot that Momma couldn't eat it. We requested more with our meals it was so good. Don't fill up too much on chips and salsa or you may not be able to finish your order. Their condiment basket had a couple of more salsas a green mild salsa and a red salsa that was pretty spicy but very tasty if you can stand the heat. Service was very friendly and quick and the meal was very reasonably priced. I can recommend the Chile Verde burrito (order it wet with green sauce - Yum!). Momma had super crispy chicken tacos that must have been pretty darn good. Neither of us had much to say while we ate. Malu's has a number of shrimp items on the menu I plan on trying as spicy shrimp dishes are a real favorite of mine. Give this place a try and see what you think. The rating is based on their tamales. We ordered them for Christmas bc we were sick and needed a holiday dinner. They were THE best tamales I've ever had with the exception of my mother-in-laws (God rest her soul). The tamales were made fresh with lots of flavorful filling and the best part was the sauce served with them- both red and green. The Atascadero Tamale Festival is coming up and I hope they enter. read more

They do a bbq chicken meal on weekends that comes with beans rice and tortillas. It was the first thing we've had there since AJs became Malu's and it was very good and well priced. The outdoor patio is nice but FYI it has very limited indoor seating. Yummy food and I'm looking forward to trying more. read more

I was out running errands with my daughter. I had heard about this place from posts on Facebook. We were in the area and decided to try it. So very happy that we did. We were welcomed by a lady with a big smile on her face. She seated us and gave us menus. She asked what we wanted to drink. The drinks were promptly delivered. She took our orders answering our questions. A short time later, she placed two platters in front of us. The food was attractively displayed and looked delicious! I had the club sandwich and fries. Yummy! The fries were freshly cooked and the seasoning was fantastic! I have never had better or tastier fries! My daughter ordered three different tacos. She said they were wonderful. We took leftovers home for dinner! We will definitely return many times! You won't be disappointed! Muy bueno! Next time I hope it's not rainy and we can enjoy their patio! read more

In Atascadero for work , searched top rated restaurants, Malus came up very high - tried the chilequiles , torta Cubano , the Albondigas , the chile relleno , tamale combo plate , and , WOW I'm angry I can't rate this place higher , the MOMENT you see this place it SCREAMS authenticity , SCREAMS IT ! then when you eat the food ? Wow , this place has it down to the fundamentals, the rice stand alone is some of the best rice , and the salsa is PERFECT. The spicy red salsa is very hot but not over kill and the green mild is PERFECT flavor ! This is one of those places that you keep eating even after you're full , be careful , --- I couldn't tell you which item was my favorite , they were all the best I've had in there category , but damn, the albondigas tasted like my grandma came down from heaven and made them herself , this place is magical , look no further , your Mexican cravings will thank you read more

Met here for lunch today and it was a wonderful surprise! Food is really fresh and delicious! The owner was super nice and attentive without being too much. I had a taco salad with chicken, Paul had albóndiga soup, Renee had chicken flautas and Travis had a torta. We were all impressed with the food and will go back for sure! I highly recommend it!
