Their current dinner menu, subject to change.

Oh, happy day! Chulo's is now serving dinner on Friday and Saturday evenings, from 4 to 8 pm. (But call ahead for reservations, since they're a popular event venue.) We were here right around 2 pm on a Thursday, so consoled ourselves with another one of their new offerings -- an Orange Creamosa! And yes, it was as fabulously delicious as it sounds. Service is always warm, welcoming, and gracious. Como familia...without the drama. Pics of their dinner menu, drink offerings, and hacienda-like interior below. Salud!

Chulo's combo with French toast, eggs and sausage

Recently went to breakfast here on a Sunday morning. The decor was what you would expect for a Mexican restaurant, without being over the top. We appreciated getting a table right away, as there was only one other table of diners when we arrived. Despite that, we waited longer than I would have expected to have our order taken and later to get our bill. Staff were very friendly though. They offer a multitude of specialty coffee drinks, including some with alcohol. I had a Nutella mocha, which was fine (but the Nutella part seems to be mostly represented by a Nutella drizzle on the whipped topping ). I did not detect much Nutella flavor within the coffee itself, which just had the usual mocha flavor. So, I don't really think it was worth a price of $8. I also ordered the Chulo's combo, which comes with eggs, sausage or bacon and choice of pancakes or French toast. I had mine with sausage patties, French toast and over medium eggs. My plate was generous, with two eggs (which were closer to over easy with pretty runny yolks), two sausage patties and two pieces of French toast. The sausage was just a little salty, but delicious otherwise. I gave one of my patties to my husband, given the generous portion I received. The French toast was my favorite. It appears to be made from a Texas toast style bread. The seasoning was good and there was a slight custard quality to it in the center of the toast, which I really loved. They could elevate things by providing heated maple syrup instead, but not a deal breaker for me. My husband really loved his eggs and bacon dish, as he cleaned his plate entirely. I hope they are not in danger of closing, since the food is good, but the lack of customers midmorning on a Sunday is a little concerning. They are in an unusual area though, sandwiched between medical and dental offices. Also, they recently added dinner service to their hours, so that may be worth checking out.

Cheese enchilada with rice no beans

Immediately walking in we were welcomed and sat promptly. We decided to sit on the patio which wasn't too busy at the time we arrived. They must welcome dogs on the patio since they had a water dish on the ground full of water. I got the cheese enchilada with Mexican rice. As seen in the picture, the cheese inside was still cold and not melted. The sauce put over the enchilada was warm. I'm assuming they thought the sauce would melt the cheese inside the enchilada. Unfortunately it didn't. The rice was good. No complaints. I tried their tropical ice tea, super good. They put a slice of orange in it so you get that citrus kick with you drink it! The service was great. The waitress was welcoming and ensured our drinks were full the entire visit. The ambiance on the patio is very zen. They have a cute water fountain running on the patio as well. That of course is nice to listen to while you enjoy your meal. Inside the restaurant is on the dimmer side with lighting but cozy.

First off this is a cute and comfortable place off the beaten path. My rating is between a 3 and 4, I felt pricing high compared to other breakfast places. They did have an extensive menu for breakfast and dinner. My husband and I usually go out to breakfast once a week. You get a 2-egg omelette which is perfect for me. My was a bacon, cheese with some avocado on top, with a side of fruit and a piece of toast. My husband had chili verde and said it was nice and moist, along with hash browns. He requested crispy but they were not plus not cooked enough. The coffee was good and service also.

Tucked away in Templeton near a bunch of medical offices and the local hospital, is Chulos Cafe and Cantina! Came here early on a Saturday for breakfast, as a friend of a friend recommended it and they were absolutely right, it is truly amazing! The breakfast menu is extensive - they have a wide variety of omelettes and scrambled options, french toast, pancakes, french toast, mexican style breakfast options, breakfast burritos and skillets. Their lunch menu also has an impressive number of options including sandwiches, salads, burritos, tortas and burgers! There is really something for everyone here. I ordered the California omelette (which came with bacon and avocado), and my friend ordered the veggie omelette. Both were absolutely delicious and my omelette was filled with so much bacon. The hash browns were cooked and grilled to perfection. The food came out very quick and was hot and super fresh. We got seated immediately and everyone working was friendly and attentive. We left happy and very full! Can't want to come back here for lunch and to try their breakfast burrito and french toast! - both looked phenomenal! 5 stars all around!

Huevos rancheros

The huevos rancheros were pretty standard, though the rice and beans we're lukewarm, on the small side. The eggs Benedict were tasty and the fruit was fresh. The server forgot sugar for the coffee and never refilled our water. With one cup of diner coffee, the total was 45.02 for two dishes. One time deal for us.

3 magic words! Open for dinner! Chulos is now open for dinner on Friday and Saturday nights! The owner has added a new menu and offer some great options for their dinner menu. Everything is always so fresh and bomb diggity! From the paella to fajitas to the Diablo camarones, you can't go wrong. Even something as simple as beans and rice, tastes unbelievably good. Tried the Churros too.... Oh. My. Gosh!!!!! The ambiance out on the back patio with the breeze makes you feel like you're on a vacation. Oh that's right, I forget we live where people vacation! Wether your looking for breakfast, lunch or dinner, Chulos is it.

I had the chilaquiles. My experience with it was that it lacked flavor, but I enjoyed it more after adding salt and hot sauce. The service was okay but our waiter never returned after we asked for hot sauce. I went up front to ask for ketchup and hot sauce.

I've been wanting to try this place for awhile now. The restaurant is tucked behind and in between doctor and dentist offices. We were seated outside. The outside is lush with plants, trees, and a fountain. A couple people mentioned a really bad smell of maybe animal poop. The restaurant wasn't too busy. A couple tables were taken outside. We had a party of 5 one being a toddler. They didn't ask if we wanted a high chair or give us another place setting. We had to grab our own straws and place setting. After ordering, our food arrived quickly. Everything looked great. The food taste great. I enjoyed the sauce on my tamale. The taco that I ordered was filled to the brim. All the flavors were great. My daughter got a burrito. It was huge. The pictures don't do the size of the burrito justice. My husband ordered a coke. It was a bottled coke. This is one of my pet peeves. In order to get a refill you have to order another one. In the end, the restaurant would make more money getting a drink machine than buying cans or bottles of soda. Their patrons would also benefit. My sister ordered chips and salsa. Our waitress never gave it to her. She had to ask for them halfway through her meal. You already have to pay extra for chips and salsa. So she should have brought them out first thing. Our waitress never asked if we wanted water refills or came to check on us. We asked for a box for our leftovers and she didn't even bring that. We had to go up to the register to get it. Overall, the food was really good. My sister said it was one of the best carne Asada burritos she had ever had. The size and taste were a 4/5. The ambience was a 4. The service was a 1. I would understand it a little more if it was busy, but it wasn't at all. I would like to give them another chance and try their breakfast or burrito next time. Everyone had a pretty bitter taste in their mouth after the poor service.

What a find!! Where to begin... I was pleasantly surprised…read moreto have come across Coya Peruvian Restaurant in a lovely street of SLO. I was even more impressed when I got to try their food and realized that they do very little to no compromising with the authenticity of their flavors. Because... what's the point of eating Peruvian if is going to taste like California cuisine? The Highlights: Ceviche Mixto: the leche de tigre was bursting with lime, perfectly cured seafood, undeniable freshness and the right amount of kick! Papas a la Huancaina: the papas were rich in that creamy velvety sauce, though it could have used a bit more of ají amarillo. Lomo Saltado: the fillet was smokey and tender with flawlessly executed wok-sear and home made fries (not frozen)! Grilled Pulpo: the octopus was tender, beautifully charred, and packed with savory flavor. Pisco Sour: because you CANNOT visit a Peruvian restaurant without trying a pisco sour! The pisco sour was properly frothed, balanced, strong, and highly refreshing. And the best for last.... **Conchitas a la parmesana** I did a happy dance in my chair as I took the first bite...The broiled scallops fused in the creamy richness of the Parmesan gratin. Muuua! Delish!!! The Service: It was courteous, prompt and the staff offered excellent suggestions. The ambiance: What a beautiful place! The atmosphere is casual, inviting and rich with culture. There are beautiful traditional displays of Peruvian textiles and striking copper craftsmanship lining the space. The wall art beautifully honors Peru's agricultural heritage creating a warm and inviting environment to stage the meal. The music was great! Latin American Spanish rock/pop. ...and please do not leave without some alfajores! One of my favorite Peruvian sweets

We decided to try this restaurant after reading so many positive reviews, which is why the…read moreexperience we had was so surprising--and disappointing. At first, things seemed promising. The staff was friendly while we waited for our table, but once we were seated, the experience quickly went downhill. It started with something simple: only 3 out of 5 of us were given water, and it took about 10 minutes (and multiple passes by our waitress, who was serving smaller tables) before the rest of us were acknowledged. After placing our appetizer order, our waitress disappeared for about 15 minutes. When the food finally arrived, only two of us were given plates for a shared dish. A third plate was brought out, but it was dirty and had to be taken back. We then waited another 10+ minutes just to get proper plates. We were told the risotto would take the longest, so when three entrées arrived, we assumed the remaining dishes--a salad and the risotto--were still coming. Eventually, the risotto arrived, but the salad never did. By this point, we had already been sitting for about an hour and a half. When we asked about the missing dish, we were told there had been a mix-up in the kitchen and it would be brought out. Twenty minutes later, after everyone else had finished eating and the table was already being cleared, the salad finally showed up. By then, it was too late--we had already shared our meals with the fifth person. What made the situation worse was the complete lack of acknowledgment. There was no apology, no sense of urgency, and nothing done to make up for the mistakes. For a place charging around $40 per plate, I expected much better service and accountability. It's especially frustrating because the food itself was genuinely good. The ceviche was delicious, the lomo saltado was excellent, and the risotto was well prepared. The yuca fries were just okay, but overall, the kitchen clearly knows what it's doing. Restaurant was well decorated and had good music. Unfortunately, the service overshadowed everything. Based on this experience, I wouldn't recommend this restaurant.

Every dish we tried was spectacular. The standout for me was the El Misti Ceviche -- unlike any ceviche I've ever had. Off the beaten path and a great spot if you're trying to avoid the tourist crowds of the downtown…read moresquare, Junction is nestled in a train station compound. Unassuming from the outside, this hidden gem brings a blend of Latino cultures to the literal table. We've been here before and loved it, but they've since elevated their menu and added many more items. The wine list is overflowing with small-batch, boutique local wines--either Latino-owned or featuring Spanish varietals. I started with a glass of Victor Hugo Merlot, which was fantastic, but let me tell you about the Caelesta Cab/Mourvèdre. This sexxy red (shoutout to my girl Sexxy Red) was velvety, incredibly well-balanced, and perfectly complemented the paella fideuà. Junction serves fideo, or fideuà, sourced from Etto Pasta, and it's always nostalgic for me. This comforting yet stylish dish hugged me like it hadn't seen me in years. I teared up (yeah, I did...what about it?) and actually paused to consider: do I want to eat this whole dish in one sitting? Should I reconsider post-date-night plans because I might be too full? Nah--bring it on. The calories can be worked off later. The seafood paella fideuà got better with every bite. The shrimp, squid, rockfish, and mussels were cooked to perfection. I found myself clutching my linen napkin, wishing the dish would never end, hoping that my wife wouldn't notice that I'm about to make this paella my bitch, wishing I could endorse this paella to run for president and run more than two terms! Splooosh! The food and wine are the kind you'd tell your grandkids about around a campfire--meals that inspire the next generation of food lovers. But the staff were just as much the stars of the show. The space is on the smaller side but thoughtfully laid out. They were slammed--in the best way. It's the kind of place where you know whatever you order will be great, yet you worry service might slip with only two servers and no hostess. Both my wife and I have worked in service, so we appreciate a well-oiled machine--and I'm not talking about myself here. I'm talking about the legends who ran the floor that night. Too often, diners overlook the staff or don't fully understand the intensity of a Friday night rush. Major kudos to the chef and kitchen team, but may the odds forever be in favor of the front-of-house crew for flawlessly navigating the chaos. Luke Estrella was definitely getting his steps in, along with his teammate, but they always made time to pour wine, share insights, and connect with guests--all while smiling and putting out fires left and right. Bravo. 4 stars cause everyone could use room to grow.

It's one of those things where you don't know what you want but every menu all looks the same. We finally tried it out for dinner after a weekend in the wine country. The restaurant is right in the heart of downtown SLO next to the park and riverwalk. We had an early reservation at 6 on a Saturday and let me say the place was packed. The outside patio was completely full which was nice to see. Checking in was easy with the hostess. All was sweet and made it fast and simply and we were seated right away without having to wait for the whole party to arrive. Menu wise, a bit of everything but they specialized in paella's. And that was had. Our waitress Kaitlin was the sweetest. Right from the start, she was a major doll. Made sure we were taken care of throughout the whole dining experience. Started off with a bottle of red for the table. A good selections from their menu. Then a few small shared plates for the table. An order of the bacon wrapped dates, Brussels sprouts, Peruvian shrimp ceviche and the gambas al ajillo. First off the dates, very tasty with salty and sweet. A good bite size with about 6 piece. Then the ceviche, nice chunks of shrimp with all the trimming. Cucumber, red onions, tomatoes , avocado, cilantro and chips. Then you have the sprouts which is pretty self explanatory. Roasted to a nice crisp with golden raisins and almonds. Pretty decent and delicious. Lastly the gambas, sautéed shrimp in paprika garlic and white wine sauce with a Parmesan slice of sourdough bread. Everything was delicious and a good start to an amazing meal. I do recommend the starters. For our entree, even though we started off with loads of the shared plates. The mains all looked amazing. Clearly we had to have the paella which they're known for. There were couple options in them but we opted for the mix which was a combination of the seafood and meat paella. Let me say it was massive and clearly more than enough for four of us. The nice big chunks of seafood and meat which they did not skimp on. The flavors and the whole combination of everything together, chefs kiss. It was pretty massive as well. Of course we couldn't just stop there, we also had the lamb chops with frites. Cooked perfectly and very tasty. The hanger steak with chimichurri sauce accompanied by roasted potatoes and sautéed broccolini. That dish was excellent and steak was cooked perfectly. Lastly, I believe it was one of their specials the sea bass. A nice thick and flaky piece of fish on top of a red sauce of tomatoes, olives. The flavor was excellent and worth it. The food was excellent and it was a surprise when there were leftovers. We may have over done it with the extra entrees after seeing the massive platter of paella. But every dish was excellent and worth it. The service was great with everyone involved. Friendly staff and excellent customer service. The food and wine were great. The whole dining experience was top notch and greatly enjoyed. We will definitely be back. At least we know about the paella now...lol... A must and highly recommend. Too full to even looked at the dessert menu.

We got 10 start off with. I personally got a paella as it has been forever since I had it. *brussel sprouts- 4.5/5- one of the better versions of brussel sprouts I have had in a while, they were beautifully roasted, they retained their character but at the same time were delicious instead of tasting too healthy. *fingerling potatoes-4.5/5- potatoes tend to be tasty any which way they are cooked. The standout in this version was the finger licking sauce it was doused in. *paella- 4.5/5- I got the chicken paella. It came with a soft jammy egg. The dish had 75% protein and about 25% rice. The rice at the bottom was nicely crisped up. The chicken was in large chunks but surprisingly non funky and wonderfully flavored. I stole some of the sauce from the tacos to amp up this dish further. 4.5 for the food, rounding up for the good vibes and great ambiance!
