    Baklava
    Melanie S.

Welcoming service, fair pricing! Food was delicious, the feta tasted high quality and it was a hearty portion I took half home. Everything was seasoned and very flavor. I only have one complaint, the baklava was so thin, not layered, barely syrup so it fell apart, not worth $5 but I wouldn't give them less than 5 stars for that because they make a lot of things homemade even hot sauce and all that being considered the bowls are only $14.50 and very good! The restaurants vibes were very laid back, good chill music playing too right on the corner easy parking. I'd definitely recommend for the bowls, platters and pitas!!

This place is situated on a cute street in Mt Airy. Although a rather small cafe inside, it has some outdoor seating as well which is nice when the weather permits. This place has absolutely delicious Mediterranean bowls. I ordered the Volcano bowl, which was marketed to be a spicy option. Although not super spicy in my opinion, the chicken had tons of flavor and I loved the sauce they used. The jalapenos in the bowl added a little bit of the extra kick I needed. Overall I would definitely come back and I'd want to try the poke bowls as well!

The shared receipt for lunch was delicious thanks for letting us borrow it.

The food was delicious but my legs swelled up and hurting when leaving the restaurant so water pill was taken to stop the swelling from getting worse. No recommendation because weight gain just sitting there eating food was not healthy but said to be healthy vegan diet food was good but salt was bad for my legs and knees . Be careful with this diet.

Happy music welcomes you into this quaint cafe situated in the area where Mt. Airy meets Germantown. The menu has something for meat lovers to vegans and plenty of freshness in between. I had an afternoon meeting in the area and found free street parking directly out front. My coffee was hot and full flavored. Sounds silly but in my opinion it really is the little details that keep consumers loyal. The expectations when going out for food is that it should not just satisfy your hunger, it should be a fulfilling dining experience made so by serving food that honors the ingredients, service that makes you feel welcome, and an environment that encourages enjoyment of the space or the company you keep. Malelani Cafe hits all of those targets and surpasses expectations. Admittedly, my expectations for food in the area is quite low due to past experiences however that is not the case here. They should call the Chicken Shawarma Pita a double, cuz it was HUGE and could easily serve 2 people. Okay maybe one super hungry person or a parent and child haha. Definitely a large and in charge lunch that allowed each ingredient to show off. The chicken was cubed and boasted big flavor and juiciness while the pickled cabbage was sharp enough to stand up to its savory counterparts. Roasted eggplant, greens and tahini balanced the bite. All wrapped in fluffy and chewy pita. Order take out or eat in, I have no doubts that you will be pleased with the fast, fresh, and healthy selections.

Upon entering, this cafe looked hectic. There were people getting ready for live band. They had to clear up a table for us to sit. The menu consists of Mediterranean food and poke selections. I ordered chicken schwarma platter served with pita. Chicken was tasty and not dry. Perfect size with some hummus.

Despite the many challenges that COVID has brought to this world, I am grateful when I get an opportunity to meet wonderful people and enjoy great food! George was great host. During my wait, I was educated about the historical roots of Mt. Airey. I am still "new" to the Philadelphia area and I am always looking forward to learning about new restaurants and new areas to visit. I ordered the smoked salmon platter with all the fixins! I mentioned that I was tossed about ordering the falafel platter and George was so gracious to drop a few freshly fried falafels in my to go container. The black bean and the original hummus were so creamy and the grape leaves were also tasty. I am not a grape leave fan and I are all three of them! A little bit of a drive for me but I am always willing to make the ride for good food and great customer service. I will definitely return. I look forward to trying the Covfefe (for shitz and giggles of course!).

FANTASTIC place. Totally recommend and would absolutely go back…read more Easy to make a reservation over the phone and our party of 5 was welcomed and brought to our table upstairs. The upstairs area has a chill vibe with some Mario-themed art as well as a TV. It seems that the kitchen is upstairs, so a lot of waiters were flying by out table to the staircase. Our waiter was pretty chill. Apparently an O's fan, he was excited to learn we're from Baltimore. Food was all fantastic. The style of fries isn't my preference, but they were decent. Other than that, I was blown away. Child #1 and Child #2 got some items from the Kids' menu - grilled cheese and cheeseburger. Bread and Butter appetizer. Is it expensive for just being bread and butter? Yes. Is it worth it? Also yes. The homemade bread is great, but combine it with honey butter with flaky salt, and it's incredible. Loads of reviews on Yelp talked about the sausage roll. GET IT. It's greasy and filling in all the right ways. Goes great with a beer. My wife got the burger and she found it to be very tasty. I got the Grilled Maitake Mushrooms dish and holy cow; it's perfect. Even if you're not a vegetarian (I'm not), you can appreciate this dish: crispy rice cake (not the dry kind from the store), tender baby bok choy, and of course the well-cooked mushrooms are tied together with black vinegar, garlic-whipped tofu (!), and a peanut sauce. A++ would absolutely get again. The food menu has some staples, but overall it does change nightly, so make sure you check it out before you come. Apparently, on Sundays, they do a different experimental flavor of wings. I was curious, but my stomach has only so much room, so I had to draw the line. There is a respectable drink menu. My wife got the blood orange mezcalita, which she liked, but thought the smoke flavor was more subtle than described. I got the Plum Fizz and would totally get it again. Pleasantly-sour with a nice fizz. It's a nice pub in a nice neighborhood of a major city - be prepared for prices to match. But it is absolutely worth it.

They were doing raffles if you ordered certain drafts but I decided to get a cocktail instead. The plum fizz was so delicious and refreshing. I liked that it wasn't too sweet or too strong (especially because it was a weekday) Anyways, because it was pretty busy I just sat myself at the bar. The bartenders were all so kind and nice and answered all of my questions. Apparently they do change some items on the menu and they do a martini and meatloaf Monday. I stuck with the burger and fries. When I tell you it was the best burger I've had in fairmount, I'm not exaggerating. I was expecting typical bar food but I was wrong. I will be back for sure and I'll be sure to tell all of my friends to go there as well. I've never had a meatloaf but just because the burger was so good I'll have to let my first one be at bad brother.

This place had so much flavor. What really stood out to me was the veggies. They were seasoned…read morereally well, which I appreciated because at a lot of Ethiopian restaurants it feels like the meat gets all the flavor and the veggies are just kind of there. Here, the veggies were delicious on their own. The service was quick, probably about five minutes, and the people were kind. The space was also spacious and comfortable. I do wish it came with another piece of injera, but I'm sure you can buy extra if needed. Overall, I'd definitely come back.

EDIT: after a few weeks I read my review and realized that it comes across as generally negative…read moreeven though my opinion is very positive. I went on too long about the kitfo. Salam is a delicious place with really friendly people. Me and my family have been taking out and eating in about once a week for months. It also attracts people working with laptops, as it is quiet and there's coffee. I am returning the 5th star because why should they appear less than excellent because of one guy's opinion of one dish? Btw the kik alicha is amazingly satisfying. ---ORIGINAL REVIEW I have a lot of positive things to say about this place, and just two complaints. I'm going to skip the positive as it is all repeated here in other reviews, other than to say that while the cooking here is not 100% in the mainstream of Ethiopian cooking, meaning that you can expect the Ethiopian dishes to land some short distance from what you are used to at any other place in Philly or D.C. or NYC etc., it is nevertheless usually delicious. The wots are spiced differently than traditional, there are more middle eastern flavors in general. The first time I came, soon after they had opened, I was disoriented and disappointed, but in later visits I decided I didn't care. The injera is among the best in Philly. Complaint#1: the doro wot sauce can sometimes (only twice) verge into the realm of so intense that you don't want to eat much of it, this has to do with both salt and spices. Complaint#2: This is the one that lost a star. They won't make their Saturday kitfo raw. If you ask for it raw it will be served rare, so the meat has received enough heat to toughen the texture and remove some of the color. I did complain, because I love kitfo and it is one of the most celebrated raw beef dishes, the beef glistening with niter kibbeh butter and looking like a shiny mount of rubies. It is amazing when made according to tradition and kind of lame when Americanized, like so many ethnic speacialties. About 3/4 of the best Philly places make it right, most in D.C. I would guess that Salam is either nervous about hygiene, a real consideration unless you mince your own beef, which is labor intensive. The excuse offered was that the beef got a little cooked by the hot butter, to which the answer is, your butter is too hot. No cooking can happen with this dish. (In Ethiopia a few do slightly cook the beef, but nobody likes those people.) I urge them to do Ethiopia justice and take kitfo off the menu, or do it right. Americans have learned a lot in the past few decades. Tell them what to expect and many will be enthusiastic. It won't work if you let them expect cooked beef. That's all the negative I have, I am looking forward to my next visit for the kik alicha.
