I recommend the char kuey teow as it has a good price to it, and has a good handful of noodles and chicken (I normally order chicken for this dish) each time you order and the chicken laksa for spicy beginners, as it isn't hot to taste the soup and the noodle is yummy with bits of chicken :9 The atmosphere of the foodcourt could be better, especially the bathroom but otherwise the bathroom situation there are many seats to choose from. I like the seats outside when it is sunny, where you can overview the stretch of the Ponsonby street the foodcourt is at be separated from other costumers, like a getaway. But the inside is also quite chill as you have seat and wait for your meal.

First up, I love the roti here. Sometimes roti can be just as bready and thick and crap as a bad naan, but the roti at Kampung is much more pastry-like - brittle and crumbly and yum yum yum. The first time I ever tried a laksa was from Kampung as well, and I can't believe I'm about to rave about food court laksa but I've had laksa since then and nothing has really measured up. Pretty good for a food court! While I can't say this is always my first choice when hitting Ponsonby Food Court up, it is a favourite.

We recently ordered takeouts and were more than impressed. In fact, we were rather angry that we hadn't been sooner - after all, it's only 5mins down the road. Shame on us! It's hard to choose, but our favourite dish was the Kapitan chicken. It was beautifully cooked in a well-balanced, aromatic sauce and served with light fluffy rice. Our only complaint was that there was enough to sauce to mop up with the buttery roti! Special mention must also be made of the Mee Goreng, which was packed full of flavour and had just the right amount of heat. I added a liberal squeeze of lemon to mine and it was seriously good. For $13, the portion was extremely generous - we had plenty of leftovers for the next day. I am rather looking forward to my next visit. Hopefully we will be dining in because the interior of this place is delightful - full of brightly coloured decorations with plenty of sparkles!

It really feels like you're in Malaysia though I've never been, but at least transported to somewhere different. It's warm and the dim lighting creates an intimate, cosy atmosphere. Great service as well. The Kung-po squid came in a long fish dish with vegetables, dried chilli and sauteed squid. Great for seafood lovers. We got the Langkawi fish special which was nice and fresh with lemon, lemon grass and coriander. Beware of the Hot Babi Pedas, as I thought I had a high tolerance for spicy but this was still Hot with a capital H. Pork slices with vegetables and cooked with cumin, fresh chilli and other spices that make you feel like you're going to breathe fire. Nasi lemak is purple fragrant coconut rice which I adore but if you're more inclined to classic, they have plain steamed rice as well. Great order on the side of the curry as well as their flaky Chanai flatbread. Food is yum, decor is absolutely wonderful. Must see

We were looking for a place to eat on the way out of Auckland. It's been awhile since I've had…read moreMalaysian and I'm always a sucker for a good laksa. A quick search brought up Gu Xiang Malaysian Restaurant. It's in a random small strip mall that also has a few restaurants and a Eastern Fresh grocery store. We dropped in on a Wednesday (around noon) for lunch. The place has plenty of tables and it was about half full. Completely full of Asian clientele. The servers speak Cantonese and English. Service is good here; just catch the waitress attention and you can get refills on your tea and water. The menu is massive; appetizers, noodles, noodle soup, fried rice, nasi lemak, dishes on rice, pork/beef, chicken, tofu, fish (market price), prawns, squid, vegetables (seasonal price) and others. All the meat and vegetable dishes are very pricey. - 2x Roti canai (#116) ($3.00 NZD each) - thought these come with a curry sauce dip but nope. You just get the roti canai. These were greasy but had some sweet tones to it that I wasn't expecting. Order this with the chicken curry ($12.90 NZD) instead. - Loo mai gai (#9) ($5.00 NZD) - this was pretty glutinous and had a thick, sweet oyster like sauce. We were intrigued by the photo of it on the wall. Just average. - Curry laksa with chicken curry (#21A) ($13.90 NZD) - the broth was creamy but not very spicy. I'm pretty picky with my laksa; this was better than I expected it to be. They throw in two types of noodles (thin vermicelli and yellow lo mein), tofu puffs and bean sprouts. Get it! - Seafood noodle (#20C) ($11.80 NZD) - the broth is sweet and tasted like wonton soup broth. You get yellow noodles, mix of seafood, bok choy and bean sprouts. Definitely a Chinese influenced dish. Pretty mediocre, nothing special in my books. - Hainese chicken on rice (#31) ($11.80 NZD) - the chicken was hot and tender. Came with delicious side of rice, a vegetable soup and chili garlic sauce. Simple but satisfying. Stick with the Malaysian dishes. Good portion sizes. 3.5 stars.

Great chicken laksa, very authentic Malaysian food for the soul together with the rest of the menu.read more
