The service was very attentive, my server let me know I could do everything via QR or order with her. I ordered a lamb curry and some roti and just because I wanted to try it I also got 1 piece of the fried chicken. It was all really good, but honestly the chicken was the best part. Excellent flavor, cooked perfectly and just a little spicy. If I ever go back here I will probably go for the fried chicken meal. This place was on 'cheap place to eat' and was rated very well on Yelp so we decided to check it out. It was a little hard to find as it was in a nice complex dominated by other signs of other restaurant. It was also pretty small. We ordered what they were known for, which was the chicken curry with roti and a side dish of green beans. The food came out pretty quickly which was nice. The green beans were really yummy. It was still crunchy on the out side but fully cooked on the inside and very flavorful. My dad really like this dish. The chicken curry with roti was also very good. The chicken was tender and the roti was cooked perfectly. As we were eating, I was observing other dishes that were coming out and OMG, they were huge. A bowl of laksa can probably feed two people! Price were very reasonable considering the portion of these dishes. I wish that they offer rice as the roti was not a good thing to soak up the curry, it was good to use as a wrap. After browsing through Yelp to find good restaurant suggestions, this place caught my attention. After 10 days of eating lamb, steak, meat pie, seafood in New Zealand, I desperately craved for some Asian food. Seafood laksa was great. The broth was rich and many pieces of shrimp were given. This was a solid dish. Nasi Goreng was a little different than the ones in Bali, Indonesia. This flavor was not as heavy and it had a fried egg. Not quite as good as Indonesian ones, but still delicious. I ordered a Teh Ais (Mamak Ice Milk Tea) and it was totally worth it. Strong tea flavor and the milk complemented the tea very well. By number of reviews, Mamak appears improbably to be the most popular place in Auckland. But I went there in the middle of the afternoon and it was still quite crowded! I got the roti plate that came with chicken gravy (chicken curry but without big chunks of chicken), dal, and some pickled cabbage. It wasn't bad, but I've had better roti canai. Some parts of the roti seemingly weren't cooked through all the way. I'm willing to believe this was an aberration though given hwo much other people like it. Also, hilariously the dish is listed as vegetarian but the chicken gravy is pretty full of ground chicken. It's quite tasty though. The full chicken curry roti lunch plate looks excellent. read more

Really happy I decided to come here for dinner with my sister. Not only are dishes $9-$15, but the portions are very large. Great for sharing! We decided to order a lot of food and went all out! We ordered the Roti Canai, Spicy Soft Shell Crab, Mamak chicken bites, and curry puffs to start. Then the Vegetarian Nasi Goreng for our main. All generous portions and all delicious!! The Roti Canai and Mamak Chicken bites were our favorite starters if you had to choose. The Nasi Goreng (similar to fried rice) was soooooooo yummy. The best laksa I've had in Auckland...hands down! Ok, so admittedly, I don't eat laksa that much in Auckland but that's largely because I didn't know you could get laksa this good (and reasonably priced at $14.50). At Mamak the soupy noodle dish comes in a bowl as big as your head and is laden with yellow noodles, tofu puffs, large pieces of tender chicken, a boiled egg and plenty of fresh bean sprouts for added crunch. The spice-laden soup is creamy with quite a kick - thank goodness the owner (?) suggested I taste teste before stirring in the hellfire hot chilli paste sitting on top. Also not to be missed is their roti, which is made fresh everyday. Unlike other roti canai I've tried, theirs was light - not at all doughy - and crispy, perfect for mopping up extra laksa sauce. We also tried the fried chicken and salt and pepper squid both of which were cooked well and quite delish but totally unnecessary given the size of our mains. The service was no fuss - efficient with minimal interaction, which suited us just fine. Perhaps a smile wouldn't go astray but we weren't too phased! read more

I was thrilled when my Malaysian friend sent me the link of Mamak for a dinner date, as I had walked past the location of their busy restaurant and thought, I can't wait to try some delicious spicy food! I Arrived just before 530 pm on a busy work day evening and already the place was packing up. I Picked an inside booth table with comfy seats and lots of space for our party of four including my one and a half year old baby. Although they don't have baby high chairs, this was not a major issue, as the boy could sit on the comfy cushioned booth. I was starving beyond belief, and was happy to share three entrees and three mains with my friend and partner. To start we picked over Spring rolls, Octopus/Squid Balls and Salt and Pepper Calamari; and to follow the Beef Rendang, Seafood Laksa, and Chicken Sambal. I enjoyed every single ounce of this meal. The Sambal was spicy and invigorating, the Laksa was soothing and full of flavour, and the Rendang, authentic and comforting. I even promised the awesome owner that I would be back to try the Roti Canai which is specially hand made in the restaurant. Meals are very reasonably priced and with helpful servings. The hype is a little high on this place. It's true that the roti is super delicious, but that just means that you should only order the dishes that come with roti. We had noodles and a curry/rice dish that left much to be desired, but our curry chicken with roti dish was pretty great. The space is extra cute, with malay phrases printed on the wall so you can practice saying "welcome" and "good morning" and "can i have some more roti, pleeeeeaasee?" But be warned: it's a small place and is very busy, so if you are going with a group you might be disappointed. Had an extra night in Auckland and decided that I wanted either Chinese or Malaysian food for dinner. I bounced on Yelp and found Mamak. I wasn't disappointed. The Nasi Lemak with Beef Rendang was very tasty. I've only had Nasi Lemak a few times with friends who made it from scratch and this dish had very similar tastes and textures. I also ordered the Soy meatballs wrapped in pandan leaves. Wasn't too keen on this one, as I didn't like the texture of the leaf and just ate the meatball. Service was fast and friendly. I was skeptical when my husband was insistent that we go to this nearby Malaysian restaurant just after I arrived in New Zealand. When we finally went, I was craving it for days after. I've only been in the country for a month, and I've been here at least once a week. The place is teeny tiny and off in a laneway/plaza type area, with a good sized outdoor area. The service is always quick and friendly. It does get quite busy on the weekends... and the evenings... pretty much any time they're open :) I can't get past their vegetarian mee goreng with a sunny side up egg on top (the runny egg is not to be missed). The sauce is heavenly - sweet, and spicy and flavorful, and a half plate of the the noodles can fill you up for 2 meals. When I went to Malaysia, I fell in love with Laksa (a spicy noodle based curry/soup hybrid which is perfect with a roti dipped into it) and never thought I'd be able to find it anywhere near as good anywhere in Auckland. And I hadn't. Until I went to Mamak. Their Laksa was insane, like I'd just stepped back into Penang. It had just the right level of spiciness, not too hot that it blew my head off, but enough to notice a kick and to give it a really authentic flavour. The roti that I ordered to accompany it (I couldn't not get one!) also didn't disappoint. My friends ordered a variety of other bits including satay and nasi goring, which were really delicious and there was plenty on the menu to choose from. The prices were absolutely fantastic too, only around $12 for a main meal and you get a healthy sized portion, so it was really good value. It's only a small restaurant but has a great outdoor area to sit in. It's no surprise that this place is always busy when I walk past. Will definitely be returning very soon. read more

I've been here so many times I've now had everything on the menu. The curry puffs are perfectly crisp, rich and slightly sweet. The roti is also amazingly sweet and salty too. The nasi goreng is a brilliant work day lunch treat - it comes with lots of crunchy tasty add-ons that leave you feeling like you've had lots of different dishes. Located across from Albert Park in a bit of a foodie alley, you would just stumble across this place unless you had an intention of going to have Malaysian food... which I did. Work mate ordered the Roti, which arrived with two dipping sauces (dill annd tandoori) and a scoop of yellow cabbage (name escapes me). Tossing my Paleo instincts to the side for a couple of minutes, I try the roti, which was tasty, ESPECIALLY when dipped in the tandoori sauce. You get two ginormous rotis, so it is enough for two people to split. I ordered a chicken dish (similar to Penang) and a Malaysian iced coffee. The chicken dish was tasty, granted I was somewhat disappointed that there were no vegetables that came with the dish (as I don't eat rice). The Malaysian coffee was a bit sweet for my taste, but that's probably because my tastes have changed since I discovered black coffee. Grabbed take out for two last night Met with a smile, handed a plastic menu with pictures within 3 seconds of stepping foot inside. I ordered a laksa, and the sambal chicken plus roti. The food was fast and I loved the noodles came separate so they wouldn't be sodden. The whole way home I had to try my best not to salivate from the delicious smells. The laksa was rich and flavors well balanced, with beautifully springy, satisfying egg noodles, the chicken sambal was moist and zingy and the rice fully and aromatic. there is nothing wrong with this generous feed for $40 for two (plus enough leftovers for lunch) Highly recommended !! read more

There's long been a battle between Mamak and Selera as to which is the best Malaysian in Auckland. Arguably, this has been decided based on who makes the best Laksa. I finally make it Mamak for lunch with a Malaysian friend who is a big Malaysian food critic - and the verdict by both of us was that Selera does a superior laksa and arguably the best in Auckland. The service is similar between the two (ie: nothing special) and Selera also has free tea on offer. We also had leek dumplings and a roti chanai at Mamak. They were very good but not sure if they are quite up to Selera standard either. Mamak is definitely a good place to go in the CBD. It's well priced. The food is delicious and it's one of only a few good Malaysian restaurants in the city. read more

I couldn't recall eating Malaysian food before, so I was relatively unsure as to what to expect. A menu filled with colour photos definitely made me feel at ease. I went with the mee goreng (prawn) and added a fried egg to the top (as you do). The waiter asked how spicy I wanted the dish and I chose medium, as my chilli tolerance is still a work in progress. Our starters were served promptly and were tasty - salt and pepper squid and chicken bites. Though this meant we all couldn't finish our mains, which were a generous size. You can get your leftovers put in a takeaway container though, just ask the staff and you'll have tomorrow's lunch sorted. I really enjoyed my main meal - just the right amount of spice and the prawns were delicious. Plus it was a very reasonable $15 (normally slightly cheaper but this was my 'with egg' price). After some disaster drink and snack nearby, passed Mamak on a thursday eve to check out their menu. Everything looked yummy and yes, we also spied on people's tables to check how the food really looked like. We started heading home but after walking 100 meters away, we decided to turn around and try it right away. Tiny place, generous portions, good prices and fast service. We ordered the Roti and the Mamak specialty. Mmmmhhhh....Looked good and tasted good as well! I also ordered their special thee, Teh Tarakih (or something similar) which I loved. The husband and I were visiting Auckland in August 2015 and were searching Yelp for places to eat. We are both big lovers of Asian food so that's usually the first type of cuisine we search for. Mamak did not have too many reviews but from the pictures it looked yummy so decided to give it a shot. All I have to say is that our entire time in Auckland, it was our favorite food! I have had take out 3 time each time ordering something different. The laksa is worth 5 stars, it is creamy, spicy, and delicious. So if you are after a bowl of hearty seafood soup look no further. From the starters I have tried the salt and pepper squid and the leek dumplings were OK. However I have had the mee goreng noodles twice, and the second time they were so oily that it was almost uneatable. Also there were very few pieces of seafood, and lots of oil drenched onions. However the worst of the lot was definitely the beef randang - this dish was straight up foul. Stay away from it at all cost! I have never eaten in given that it is a small place and I just don't like to be crammed while I eat. So given that I don't like to eat in, and I only like one part of the menu Mamak will not be frequented by me. read more
