The Chef was very accommodating, but his new waitress did not know the menu and had a hard time with the Malay words. In the end our order did make it through. The portions are not big like most of the other Malaysian restaurants. But what it lacked in quantity was made up by the good quality food. I would recommend this place not so much for authentic Malaysian food but rather for a finer twist on the otherwise street food; likewise, it is considered pricey for its portions.

Mutiara still represents the best ( and possibly only ) true Malaysian restaurant in Auckland,…read moreand the reason is simple: it's owned and run by a formally-trained Malaysian chef who is anxious to deliver Nyonya food which properly represents the amalgam of cultural - and culinary - influences which Malaysia itself represents. Double-frIed beans, beef or chicken rendang, lots of fish and/or vegetarian dishes whose name escapes me, and a very good waiting staff, make Mutiara the place for a good night out.

The hotel concierge recommended the Commercial Bay food court on the second floor. At first, we…read morewere hesitant about eating at a food court as we imagined it would be like Taco Bell, Panda Express, Burger King, etc. But it turned out to be more like a modern food hall. It's inside a commercial building with over ten vendors offering a nice mix of cuisines: Vietnamese, Malaysian, Chinese, Mediterranean, and Korean, plus a few places for juice, açaí, and matcha drinks. We decided to try Eden Noodle, mainly because it had the longest line--which usually says something about how popular (and hopefully good) the food is. We ordered the pork ribs with rice noodles and the wontons in chili oil. We chose mild, but it was still quite spicy, so next time we'll definitely go for not spicy. The ordering process was super easy. You go to one of the three kiosks, grab a pager with a number, enter your order, pay, and wait for the buzzer to go off when your food's ready--it took about 15 minutes for ours. There's plenty of seating--tables, chairs, and benches--and you often end up sharing a table with strangers. That might feel unusual for Americans, but it actually reminded me of Hong Kong, where space is limited and communal dining is the norm. Overall, portion sizes were decent for the price, and the flavors were good--just a bit spicier than expected for "mild."

I came here for lunch and got the mee goreng with kopi tarik. The food and drink came out pretty quickly. You can choose the spicy level of the mee goreng and I chose "spicy"; it came out exactly the way I hoped! The portion is good for one hungry (but not starving) person. It tasted good, reminded me of char kway teow but in noodle form. It came with lots of bean sprouts, chicken, 2 slices of fish cakes and 2 prawns. The kopi tarik is also decent. Taste-wise, I was a little surprised. It wasn't exactly the taste of kopi tarik that I'm used to, but it's not a bad taste. Overall a good place to get your Malaysian fix.

Straight away you notice the difference - this place has made an effort with their decor! Specialising in Malaysian & Indonesian cuisine, the waitstaff at Golden Tulip are happy to help and recommend dishes. The menu is extensive, as with a lot of Dominion Rd eateries! With classics such as Char Kuey Teow, Mee Goreng, Beef Rendang and Nasi Lemak, the closest you'll find to a Laksa is Curried Laksa Noodles. We plumped for a Mongolian Beef hotplate, Assam Prawns and a Hainanese Chicken. Each dish was a very good example of it's type, without being mind-blowing. The prawns were particularly good; plump & juicy with loads of the salty, sweet Assam sauce. The servings were huge, so we ended up taking the leftovers home. Golden Tulip & it's close Dominion Road neighbours Cinta and Santhiya's are giving Malaysian food the reputation it deserves. We'll definitely be back to work our way through the menu!

The service was very attentive, my server let me know I could do everything via QR or order with her. I ordered a lamb curry and some roti and just because I wanted to try it I also got 1 piece of the fried chicken. It was all really good, but honestly the chicken was the best part. Excellent flavor, cooked perfectly and just a little spicy. If I ever go back here I will probably go for the fried chicken meal. I had wanted to try one of the sweet roti options for dessert, but by the time I finished the chicken, roti and most of the curry, I had no room left for more.

I popped in to Mama Rich again for an authentic laksa because last week I ordered a laksa in Singapore and got a Tom Yum Soup. I felt robbed! Feeling so much better having sipped and slurped my way through this bowl of laksa goodness. This cafe is a favourite for many familiar with Malay cuisine, even Malaysians. Evident by their attendance and quaffing of the hearty noodle soups. Their baked goods here are seriously good too. Try their afghans...they actually taste like....well, afghans. Of all the laksas I've had in Auckland, this ranks in top three for taste but number one for sheer volume and there's plenty of chicken in it too. For a lunchtime special, two would feel sated sharing a bowl of laksa.

Well however the businesses are joined or not , Mama Rich had the exact same menu as Selera . I had the char kieow ( sorry spelling) and it was the same as Selera , but without the spice and charred flavour that I love so much at Selera . All the dishes looked good and I wish I was more adventurous to try something else . That's not too say I didn't like it ,but personally I feel Selera is better . Mama Rich was clean and quiet for families and a cafe feel , no free tea here . (And when I asked if there was tea like at Selera the server looked at me like I was a crazy person). I like the noise at Selera and the jostling for tables , it feels more authentic. I love Malaysian food and I'll be sure to give Mama Rich another try , but I'm sure I'll be enticed back to Selera before long .
